Here is my situation need help with .... got a speeding ticket today and the state police here in Illinois took my license until the ticket is paid and then they return it in the mail .... seemed odd to me and didn't like that but did not have an option according to trooper .... my problem is I am traveling to Kansas City this Friday and have a rental car reserved, I won't be able to get the car without my license will I??? Wondered if anyone had any insight on what I can do in this situation since my copy of the ticket is considered my license for now according to the trooper??

Seriously? I've never heard of that. What that trooper did sounds illegal. How could he let you drive away without your license when it's illegal to drive without one? I don't see how that ticket could serve as its replacement. I think that trooper screwed you over man.

Man, that seriously sucks. You better run out tomorrow and get a state ID card.

http://www.aps.us/news/Chicagoarticle/chi.html

Now, state law requires that drivers ticketed for a moving violation post bail. They do that by paying $75 at the police station, surrendering a bond card (usually available from insurance companies) or giving up their driver's license. Police officers also can just ask for a signature, but such leniency is rare.

Because few people have bond cards or the time to travel to a police station, they usually give up their licenses, experts say. In some cases, drivers are not given a choice. Kamm was not, she said. Her license was returned a month later in the mail after she paid her fine.

That is really smart, especially if you need to catch a flight...this northern state is very in touch with the working class.......:mj07:

I live in IL, and they do take your license unless you have a couple Benjamin's you might want to give instead.

From Budget - Take your citation and any other docs with you

2nd form of id required too

http://www.budget.com/budgetWeb/htm...l I need to present when I pick up my rental?

Will you accept any other form of identification in lieu of a driver's license?
Answer: In lieu of a valid driver's license, Budget corporate-operated locations in the U.S. will accept traffic citations or summonses issued by officials in these seven states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. The citation only will be accepted up until the court appearance date shown on the citation or summons. A customer who presents a citation/summons in lieu of a driver's license is required to present a second means of personal identification with a signature on it. Any second means of I.D. with a signature is acceptable, such as a department store card, passport, library card or company I.D. with a signature.

Rules at licensee-owned locations and locations outside of the U.S may vary. It?s always best to check the terms and conditions on your online reservation confirmation or on the location information page to see which rules apply for your selected location. Then, if you still have questions, please contact us.

Rent a Car with a Traffic Citation
or Temporary Driving Permit?

Joann asks:

Re: Can you rent a car with a traffic citation in lieu of your regular license:

I am generally a responsible professional, but I made a mistake and was arrested for a DUI over the weekend. I was issued a MI temporary driving permit from the police station that reads:
This permit is only valid if you have a valid MI drivers license. Carry this permit when driving.

I am not convicted of anything at this time and I hope that I won't be, however this process will take a long time. My problem and now question is I don't want my employer to know my business and I have to travel for work and rent cars particularly next month. This is a crappy situation that I made for myself I know, but when I read the regulations it seems it might be possible but I am trying to confirm to save myself from a more embarrasing situation:

A traffic citation issued by any state, territory or possession of the U.S., as a temporary license, valid for the entire rental period (the court date being the expiration date) accompanied with a second form of photo identification with signature (excluding the credit card used for rental). Can you please let me know how this will work. Can I rent a car with a traffic citation?

My Response:

According to your last statement above, if the car rental company will allow you to rent a car with a traffic citation in lieu of your regular license, they require that the license be valid for the whole rental (they would consider your court date to be the expiration date of the permit and your rental must end before this date). You would have to contact the rental car company in advance to determine what would be acceptable as a second form of photo ID with signature.... some common ones that most often accepted would be a passport or company id card with photo and signature.
Here is the basic information provided by some car rental companies regarding their policy on the ability to rent a car with a traffic citation. Note: some companies are not completely clear on the policy with regards to traffic citations specifically... you should always contact a company representative for clarification before renting, to make sure that you meet all rental requirements and/or if you have any questions about car rental policy.

One more reason to have AAA.

What are they gonna do to help?

Those fuks wouldn't even come out and jump start my car and I thought that was their specialty.

as someone else said, take the citation and a second form of id. Can't remember what outfit it was but that worked for me when I had to rent a car previously and had the same situation.

Look on the back of your card, Jack.

Says right there: This card can be accepted as an arrest bond for most minor traffic violations....

Thanks for all the tips guys .... called my rental company (Thrifty) and talked to a supervisor who said I had to have a valid license, so seem to be out of luck with them .... luckily I have a valid passport so I can at least get on the plane but guess will have to check with Budget or some of these other companies as to whether they will give me a rental car .... the problem I may have is there is no court date on my ticket, so not sure what that will mean??

The ticket says no court appearance required (in other words they want me to just mail in the fine or pay online) ... although on the line that says Circuit Court location and date there is some scribble written (which is illegible) .... the other problem I see is that I do not know my drivers license number and not sure where to get it?? May just go downtown Chicago to Daley center drivers license bureau and throw myself at their mercy ???
