Sandals Honeymoon...worth the money?

I'm in the process of planning our honeymoon for this October and I've been asking people their thoughts on different resorts. It seems as though people seem to be split down the middle on the Sandals resort as some have loved it and others didn't think it was worth the money and hype. As of now I have narrowed the choice, if we did go there, to the Regency on St. Lucia and the Sandals Antigua. If anyone has been to either place, or another Sandals, I'd appreciate your feedback and thoughts. Awhile back I remember another thread which talked about this issue so I know there are people who have been there. For this amount of money I'd like to not be on the fence about if we should go there or not. We do want the All-Inclusive so that we don't have to worry about where we eat. Another option is getting a villa where we have our own cook and housekeeper. If anyone has gone this route the stories and feedback are appreciated!

Thanks,

I have been to both the Sandals Grande on St Lucia as well as Sandals Negril so perhaps could offer you a view on both. Congrats by the way, we are also going on our honeymoon this October! After having been to the Caribbean a couple times in the not so distant past, we have decided on 2 weeks in Hawaii this time around, we cant wait. But on to Sandals.

If I had to take a step back and decide again whether or not we would go back, we probably would not. We are definitely in your camp though, we really wanted to have all inclusive. And even after being disappointed in Negril, we gave Sandals another try, in hopes that it would get better. But once we got there, it was sort of like well, its all included, but the meals are average at best, and the drinks arent that great either. Maybe one beer or two on tap at the most (red stripe in jamaica and piton in st lucia) then miller lite in cans (no bottles at either resort). The mixed drinks at both resorts were just OK, they were served in tiny cups and werent all that great. So yes, it is free and yes you can drink as much as you want, but it wasnt anything to write home about. It was nice getting Pina Coladas and bringing them down to the beach, but by the time you get all set up, your drinks are gone, and they arent keen on serving you more than one at a time.

Sandals, I think in all cases, takes over older resorts and slaps their name on them. We found the suites to be just that, older rooms with a new coat of paint. But as we talked to other couples, we got the feeling most of their resorts were like that.

It also depends what kind of vacation you want. We were really looking for a more quiet laid back vacation and figured we had it made at a resort that had no kids. No such luck. Sandals are very, very heavy into their "Playmakers" (activity hosts) getting you into their games during the day- you can win little prizes for each game you play and at the end of the week they give away bigger prizes for the people with the most points. Im not kidding some people REALLY get into this. So instead of a bunch of kids running around screaming, you have 50+ year old drunk adults playing pool twister or having 3 legged races on the beach all afternoon. Its cool if thats what you want, but you couldnt sit and read a book by the pool. It was not what we were looking for at all, but its really up to the individual going to decide what they want.

When we finally got back from St Lucia and I priced it out, we could have stayed in a suite at the Ritz Carlton St Thomas and had $200 a day or so for food and drinks left over. I mean, we paid something like $900/night in high season, which looking back on it was ridiculous. But if you look on Sandals site, $400 per night per person (once you add on taxes) is average if you look at all their resorts and room categories, depending on what time you go, so by no means did we pay a lot of money in comparison to some of the higher room categories.

But when I think about it now, no way I would pay that much again to go there, too many other resorts I could go to and have money left over. Is it a pain to always pay for drinks? Sure, but at least if I want a Sam Adams or Heineken I can get it, and not settle for whatever shite beer they have. Some little things got to me too, like the bars werent open in the morning, so if you wanted a bloody mary, or mimosa, it took an act of god to get one. And it makes you feel like, shit for this much money, and for something you claim is ALL-inclusive, does the attitutude need to be included?

Anyway, sorry to vote 'no' on this.

I stayed at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian last June for our honeymoon. It's only been open for about a year and a half (as a Sandals), so all of the fresh paint is still clean.:tongue

I am not as against it as Ace, but he always seems to be a little stonger in his convictions about things. The one thing that I did not care for with the place was the quality of food. My wife and I are big foodies, and I was expecting the restaurants to be as good as what people talk about cruises (never been on a cruise myself). If cruise food was like Sandals, then I will never be on a cruise. I enjoyed the drinks, and the Sandals Grande had three draft beers when I was there: Piton (a light lager), Heineken, and one I can't remember that was a red I believe.

Our room was great, but I would not pay for the beach view again since we weren't in the room much. It was nice to have breakfast on our patio watching the ocean, but I don't think it was worth the upcharge. We also paid for the Concierge room which meant we could pretty much get anything we wanted at any time of the night (menu was limited but sufficient between 12 and 5 am). We also had a fully stocked bar in our room which made bloodies and mimosas in the morning a breeze. I would pay for this upgrade again.

My biggest mistake of our entire honeymoon was the location, though. We had 7 night and 8 days (counting both Sundays). Going all the way to St. Lucia took two of those days from us because it is so deep in the Caribbean. I would recommend going a little further north of that.

I don't think you save any money going the route of all-inclusive. Just set yourself the same budget that you would spend on this and don't blink when you're spending it somewhere that's not all-inclusive.

And last, HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Another note that Ace pointed out: Our Playmaker was annoying as shit. He looked just Kordell Stewart and he would interrupt my wife and I with some pointless, very loud conversation. I asked him to leave us alone once. But like mentioned above, some people were really into his gig.

I agree with dawgball and love food (great food ) as well. The entrees suck and yes, you can eat as much as you want, but they just aren't good. Hope this helps.

dawg we must have just missed each other, we were there the first week in June last year.

Agree with everything you said, we are also foodies and were really disappointed in the food. Sad to say but I was happiest during the week having grilled cheese and fries at the beach grille.

I didnt want to mention it because I'm not sure if I was the only one, but did you have a problem with insects when you were there? We found the beach grille and parts of the resort teeming with them. Not our room, just around the resort. I guess it was also rainy season though, thats pretty much what you get in the caribbean.

Ace--We were there the first week of June as well. June 1 thru 8 to be exact. We got married on May 31. I don't remember bad insects, though.

I liked it that the servers encouraged me to just order two entrees if I couldn't decide! But they both were usually below average.

Wineguy--what are your favorite restaurants in Atlanta? We favor Bacchanalia (heads above all others), Tiburon Grille, Fogo de Chao, and Atlanta Fish Market for upscale. Ciao Bella, Steamhouse, and Surin for everyday occasions. Corner Cafe at the Buckhead Bakery for Sundays. Can you tell we live in Buckhead? :tongue

My wife and I made our first trip to St. Lucia in November and stayed in the Sandals Grande St. Lucian. 7 nights.

I have nothing terrible to report. We went there to do nothing, and we were successful.

I loved the "all-inclusive" aspect, and we did a lot of price shopping on trips and islands and don't feel like we were taken for a ride.

We are usually pretty picky about food, too; but most of the places to eat were good, moreso the ones that were "casual". The "elegant" ones ended up being a bit of a disappointment, but not awful.

I was a little wary of it being a Sandals, and was worried it might be marketing hype. But this was the newest resort and we were content with everything.

The "Playmakers" (the staff) were extremely cordial and interesting to chat up. And even the more extroverted ones gave us our space. I think they are trained to know when to leave someone alone.

The only nitpick we had all week was that the snorkeling sucked.

ace - First off, congrats to you as well and when is your big day as you mentioned you are getting married in October? We are all set for October 17th and then leaving probably the 19th wherever we decide. If we weren't going to Hawaii 3 times in the next 18 months for weddings then that would have been our choice for a Honeymoon. My sister and two friends will be married there so it lost some of the appeal for us to go in October if that makes any sense. I am looking forward to going there as neither of us have been there before and be sure to update me after your trip as our first trip will be after you in November. People basically have made the same comments as you in regards to the drinks and "Playmakers". It's funny you mention the Ritz Carlton as they are opening a brand new one in the Caymans and I was thinking of going there. Thanks for your reply and honesty as that is what I'm looking for!

dawg - my fiance and I are big "foodies" as well and another negative was that people said the food was "okay" at best. For that amount of money going to another resort and paying for our food might be the best option. I totally agree that you lost two days on travel which is why we are going for at least 10 days wherever we go. A week goes by quick when you take out the first and last days. Slowly I am talking myself out of the All-Inclusive which is fine by me but will take some convincing for her. All she hears about from people is going this way but since she is a picky eater this will help my cause. On a side note, I love the Buckhead area as one of my buddies lived off Peachtree Battle and I was down there for consecutive New Year's in '00 and '01. I've eaten at Tiburon Grille, Justin's (for the fish bowls!) and possibly Bacchanalia if that was the Northern Italian place which had a great wine list and entrees big enough for two???

wineguy - thanks for the reply as I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has been there before!

ceciol - I'm glad to see someone had a positive experience although I am not as high on the idea as I was over a month ago. It's pretty funny that you mention the snorkeling sucked as since I am certified and my fiance isn't we were going to go snorkeling instead of diving. Another strike against Sandals in my book...

This is the only thing I have to do and I am no better off than I was the end of last year...

Sandals Antigua

My wife and I did 10 days at the Sandals Antigua for our honeymoon 2 years ago. It is the best. We would love to go back every year.

I would highly recommend that property.

We've been shopping other all inclusive resorts and nothing we've seen comes close.

It was very expensive but worth every dollar.

They have so much to do on and off of the resort.

Let me know if you have specific questions about that property.

PocketAces - thanks for the reply as I've wanted to get feedback from someone who went to Antigua. Right now if we went to any Sandals resort that would be it. St. Lucia seems to be the most popoular but we've heard Antigua is supposed to be the nicest. I guess the main questions would be in regards to the food and rooms at that resort. Also, we want to go snorkeling and on island tours. St. Lucia has volcanos which they will take you to and I really don't know all that much about Antigua. If we went there we could basically get the nicest room available for the same amount of money as a mid-level room on St. Lucia. Any additional information or thoughts you have would be great! Thanks in advance...

Basically where we got the shaft was their choice of dive/snorkel site. We were only able to go one day (because on the other days the sea was too rough), and I have to believe that the captain was just lazy and didn't want to bring us out to a faraway spot. It was literally nothing but rocks, and a few fish that I could see in a pet store. Lame.

I'm not a scuba-diver, but I didn't hear (or see) anyone mention that it was special. If it was anything like the snorkeling, then it would probably suck, too.

Have never, nor will I, ever visit an "all-inclusive" resort. Have been all over the Caribbean and to Hawaii several times, and Hawaii wins hands down. I realize you are going to Hawaii for those weddings, so maybe you could take a shorter trip for your honeymoon to a place like Cancun and spend some extra time in Hawaii after one of those weddings.

I'm sure you certified divers know this already, but Belize has some of the finest diving in the Western Hemisphere. My wife and I spent 8 days there this past Christmas and it was as fantastic as we had heard it was. Belize is a 3rd world country though, and other than a few Mayan ruins, there isn't much to see or do there but scuba dive. But the diving is world class, so if you haven't dived there before, you are in for a special treat.

bigdad2,

I would give the food about a B-. You could always find what you were looking for but they had 4 resturants I think and after a few nights you need to start going back to ones you've already been to. I think that would be the same at any all inclusive resort unless they had 10 places to eat.

Overall the food was good.

The drink service was unbelieveable. Our honeymoon was over new years and they had fireworks and the drinks were flowing the whole 10 days. Anything you could think of was great.

Our room Id give a A-. We had a mid range room with the Consierge(sp?) service. It cost more for that. t was worth it to us becuase we had a full stocked bar and food in our room. So if we didnt feel like going down to one of the bars we didnt have to.
Some might not feel it would be worth it we did.

There were better rooms right on the beach but they were not as private.

Another great thing about this proprerty are the amount of pools/hot tubs. They were everywhere. There was never more that 2-3 people at the each pool and the resort was full capacity.

The website has decent pictures of the rooms.

Snorkeling. We did that and it was fun as hell. There is soooo much to do and its all free.

The service was great and they never took a tip. After a few days we were behind the bar making the drinks. The Bartenders can get you anything you'd ever want.

I could go on and on about this place.

Let me know if you have any other questions or ask Jack for my email.

Have a great time.

Oh one more thing, we left the resort a few times and that was fun too. They have shopping and a Casino on the island.

I know this post is really old, but wanted to get thoughts on any of the Sandals resorts or other honeymoon places people have been recently.

Very interesting read from 2004 about thoughts.

I was in Atlanta most of this week. My company is still headquartered there. I just work remotely. next time I am going to be in town, I'll post it here and we can meet up. We'll add wineguy to that as well.

bsucards - if I had to do the honeymoon over again, I would avoid trying to make it some exotic location if you are going to stay at an all-inclusive resort. If you are going to be at the resort the whole time (if you weren't, why stay at all-inclusive); then Mexico is BY FAR a better option. You will basically get the same scenery (ocean + beach + mountains), but it will be far less expensive and mroe importantly FAR less travel time.

If you're not worried about the money portion, then you will be able to get the ultra-plush suites at a place in Mexico versus a slightly upgraded room at a Sandals resort.

We went to El Dorado Royale in the Riviera Maya area of Mexico for our 2 or 3 year anniversary. I would highly recommend this over the Grand St. Lucian that we went to for our honeymoon. Food was far superior. Cost was about half. Travel time was minimal because it's just south of Cancun.

Wife and I got married at Sandals Halcyon in St. Lucia, We've been back a few times, and been to the Sandals in Antigua a couple times too. I really like the resorts, the all-inclusive deal is good, at least for us. unlimited drinks, food is decent. Antigua just built an addition to the resort there, really, really nice. They have an english pub type thing that is nice too. If you go Sandals route I recommend Antigua. Never been to the resorts in Jamaica or bahamas.
