New Mexico State (3-8) at San Jose State (1-9)

DATE & TIME: Saturday, November 28th, 8:00 p.m. (et).

FACTS & STATS: Site: Spartan Stadium (30,456) -- San Jose, California. Television: AggieVision. Home Record: NMSU 2-4, SJSU 1-4. Away Record: NMSU 1-4, SJSU 0-5. Neutral Record: NMSU 0-0, SJSU 0-0. Conference Record: NMSU 1-5, SJSU 0-6. Series Record: San Jose State leads, 14-2.

GAME NOTES: The final home game for legendary coach Dick Tomey takes place this weekend as he and his San Jose State Spartans challenge the New Mexico State Aggies to a Western Athletic Conference showdown in California.

Tomey, who still has a game left at Louisiana Tech the first week of December, announced that he will be hanging it up at the conclusion of this, a very difficult season for the Spartans. If not for a 19-9 win against Cal Poly, there would have been little positive to come from this campaign. Last week, the squad made it to overtime against Hawaii at home but eventually gave up the 17-10 decision to the Warriors.

As for the Aggies, they are trying to stay out of the WAC basement as they sport a 1-5 mark in league play and SJSU is 0-6 at the moment. New Mexico State has had trouble coming up with wins this season, one of the three coming against Prairie View by a scant three points the second week of the campaign. Last weekend, NMSU became just the latest victim of the surging Nevada scoring machine in a 63-20 debacle. On a positive note, the 20 points for the Aggies were more than the team had scored in the previous four games combined, but it still made little difference in the outcome.

Against the Aggies in a series that dates back to 1984, SJSU has won all but two of the 16 previous encounters, including a 31-14 triumph last season to give the Spartans five in a row over NMSU.

A pair of field goals by Kyle Hughes through the first three quarters were really the only signs of life for the NMSU offense against Nevada last week. Sure, Jeff Fleming tossed a pair of touchdowns to Marcus Allen in the fourth quarter, but by that point Nevada had already generated 63 points and had long gone to the backups in order to give the reserves some reps and keep the stars safe. Fleming threw for a mere 77 yards and the running game came up with a paltry 155 yards, mostly because the Nevada offense was on the field for so much of the time. Fleming has tried to be the savior for this team but it just hasn't happened. He has thrown for a mere four touchdowns and been picked off 11 times. Throw Trevor Walls into the mix and this squad has just six aerial scored and 16 INTs, nowhere near what it takes to stay competitive in an offensive-minded league like the WAC. The rushing offense has a total of only eight touchdowns and because of that the team is posting a mere 12.0 ppg, which has them ranked last in the entire nation this week.

Sixty-three points. What do you say to a defense after they've given up nine touchdowns in barely over three quarters of play? The only positive the Aggies could take from their experience against Nevada last week is knowing that they are not the only ones to be run over by the Wolf Pack. However, it is still hard to ignore the gaudy numbers as New Mexico State surrendered a whopping 574 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. The Aggies will also forever be linking to the fact that they were the ones on the field when the Pack produced their third 1,000-yard rusher of the season. Because of the Nevada ground attack, the Aggies now rank second-to-last in the WAC and 114th in the country with an astounding 226.9 ypg allowed. The pass defense has been much better with just 197.6 ypg permitted, but some of that has to do with the fact that opposing coaches scheme their offenses to go after the Aggies on the ground to begin with. This group is averaging just 3.6 tackles for loss per game, which means most plays are well on their way before New Mexico State has time to react.

It was just another in a long line of disappointments for the Spartans last weekend as they ended up in the loss column yet again versus Hawaii. Kyle Reed, who scored the lone touchdown for SJSU, converted 14-of-22 passes for 131 yards, but was sacked once and tossed an interception. However, he was still head and shoulders above Jordan La Secla who completed just one of his three passes to his own teammate for 14 yards, two other tosses going into the hands of the visiting Warriors. The squad ran a mere 56 plays, compared to 77 for Hawaii, resulting in just 277 yards of total offense. Five times this season the Spartans have been held to 10 points or less, with the squad's best effort coming in a 29-25 setback in league play against Idaho the second week of October. There has been almost no rushing attack to speak of, the group averaging just 77.6 ypg to rank 115th in the country. Now that the Spartans have gone back and forth between La Secla and Reed the passing game is no longer stable either, and that's why this team is 118th in the nation in scoring with just 13.2 ppg.

The Spartans did well to slow down the Hawaii offense last week, making sure the Warriors scored on just two of their six opportunities inside the red zone. But as great as that effort may have been, the fact remains that SJSU still ended up losing in overtime. As poorly as the offense has performed this season for the Spartans, there's no denying that the defense has a big part in the squad having such a poor campaign. Permitting 270.3 ypg on the ground means the unit ranks last in the conference and 119th in the country this week and that plays heavily into the squad's 467.3 ypg of overall offense surrendered. The pass defense has been decent with 197 ypg allowed, but the secondary hasn't been nearly as aggressive going after passes this season as they were in the past. In fact, the squad has a combined five interceptions over 10 games, by no means threatening to opposing passers.

As sad as it is, the Spartans have been downright miserable this season and the only reason to think the squad will show up for a fight this weekend is in honor of coach Tomey, which is more than can be said for the Aggies.

Predicted Outcome: San Jose State 20, New Mexico State 14

Notre Dame (6-5) at Stanford (7-4)

Notre Dame (6-5) at Stanford (7-4)

Notre Dame (6-5) at Stanford (7-4)

DATE & TIME: November 28th, 8:00 p.m. (et)

FACTS & STATS: Site: Stanford Stadium (50,000) -- Stanford, California. Television: ABC. Home Record: Notre Dame 5-3, Stanford 5-1. Away Record: Notre Dame 1-2, Stanford 2-3. Neutral Record: Notre Dame 0-0, Stanford 0-0. Conference Record: Notre Dame 0-0, Stanford 6-3. Series Record: Notre Dame leads, 16-7.

GAME NOTES: A bitterly disappointing regular season comes to a close for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who will take on a tough Stanford team in non- conference action.

Notre Dame has completely fallen apart, as a promising 4-1 start has turned into a 6-5 record. The last three outings have resulted in losses of five points or less, including last weekend's 33-30 overtime setback to UConn. Head coach Charlie Weis has been the topic of much conversation among fans and analysts, as it is the opinion of most that he will be coaching his last regular season game for the Irish this weekend.

As for Stanford, its Rose Bowl dreams were crushed last weekend with a 34-28 loss to rival Cal in the "Big Game". That defeat halted a three-game win streak for the Cardinal, which is now 7-4 overall and 6-3 in Pac-10 play. All four losses this season have come by 10 points or less for Jim Harbaugh's team.

Notre Dame has won the last seven meetings with Stanford and owns a 16-7 advantage in the all-time series.

The Notre Dame offense was held in check in regulation by UConn last weekend, as the Fighting Irish posted 20 points through 60 minutes of action. They did score a touchdown on their first possession in overtime, but a field goal on the second possession opened the door for the Huskies to win the game. Jimmy Clausen completed 30-of-45 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, another stellar performance by the Notre Dame signal caller. Golden Tate made nine catches for 123 yards and one touchdowns, while Michael Floyd finished with eight grabs for 104 yards and a score. Armando Allen spearheaded the ground attack with 106 yards. Overall this season, Clausen has thrown for 3,382 yards and 23 touchdowns with only four interceptions, tremendous numbers for one of the nation's truly elite quarterbacks. Tate has made 83 catches for 1,295 yards and 12 touchdowns, while Floyd has 38 catches for 710 yards and seven scores in the six games he has played. Notre Dame is averaging 29.4 ppg and 452.2 total ypg.

Notre Dame played fairly well against the UConn passing attack last week, as the Fighting Irish enabled only 12 of 25 attempts to be completed. Unfortunately, coach Weis' team looked helpless against the run, as UConn ran the ball 48 times for 231 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Notre Dame is allowed 24.2 ppg this season, and the defense is permitting 388.8 total ypg. Of the 30 touchdowns that have been surrendered to opposing offenses, 16 have come through the air. The Fighting Irish are giving up 4.6 yards per rushing attempt and 13.7 yards per pass completion, so there is obviously a wealth of room for improvement against both means of attack. Kyle McCarthy leads the team with 90 total tackles, and he has intercepted five passes. As for Darius Fleming, he has recorded 12 TFLs for Notre Dame.

Stanford tailback Toby Gerhart is a legitimate candidate for the Heisman Trophy despite his team's four losses. Gerhart has rushed for 1,531 yards and 23 touchdowns while averaging 5.3 yards per carry, and his consistency from week to week has been most impressive. Gerhart has certainly helped freshman quarterback Andrew Luck succeed under center. The rookie has connected on 55.2 percent of his passes for 2,377 yards and 13 touchdowns with only four interceptions, and he has rushed for 319 yards and two touchdowns as well. The top receiver on the roster is Ryan Whalen, who has recorded 48 grabs for 786 yards and three touchdowns. Stanford is averaging 35.4 ppg and 436.5 total ypg, tremendous numbers by any standards. Gerhart was outstanding against Cal last week, as he recorded 136 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries. Luck, unfortunately, was dreadful, completing only 10-of-30 passes with an interception.

Opponents are posting 25.1 ppg and 391.9 total ypg against a Stanford defense that has been mediocre at best. The Cardinal have permitted 18 rushing touchdowns and 15 scores through the air. They are surrendering 4.5 yards per rushing attempt and 11.5 yards per pass completion. Clearly, Harbaugh's offense is more responsible for the seven wins than the defensive unit. Keep an eye on Thomas Kaiser for the Cardinal, as he has 13 TFLs to his credit, including eight sacks. Stanford yielded 477 total yards to Cal last weekend, including 242 rushing yards on 57 attempts. The Cardinal came up with just one takeaway and allowed some big plays through the air. Clearly, the fact that Stanford surrendered 31 first downs to the Golden Bears in unacceptable.

Stanford is the smart pick in this game for a couple of simple reasons. The Fighting Irish simply cannot stop the run, and the Cardinal possess one of the nation's truly elite tailbacks.

Predicted Outcome: Stanford 34, Notre Dame 20

San Diego State (4-7) at U-N-L-V (4-7)

DATE & TIME: Saturday, November 28th, 9:00 p.m. (et).

FACTS & STATS: Site: Sam Boyd Stadium (41,800) -- Las Vegas, Nevada. Television: The Mtn. Home Record: SDSU 3-3, UNLV 3-3. Away Record: SDSU 1-4, UNLV 1-4. Neutral Record: SDSU 0-0, UNLV 0-0. Conference Record: SDSU 2-5, UNLV 2-5. Series Record: San Diego State leads, 11-7.

GAME NOTES: A couple of Mountain West Conference foes showing identical records across the board meet in Sin City this weekend, as the UNLV Rebels entertain the San Diego State Aztecs in the season finale at Sam Boyd Stadium.

For UNLV Head coach Mike Sanford, this will be his final game with the school, having been told he will not be brought back following this, his fifth year in Las Vegas. Under the direction of Sanford, the Rebels are a mere 15-43 and at this point have lost two of their last three outings. Last week, the team watched from the sidelines during its bye, giving it more time to reflect on a 45-17 loss to Air Force on the road in Colorado on November 14th.

As for the Aztecs, under first-year head coach Brady Hoke, they have been very inconsistent in 2009 and are at the moment suffering through a three-game slide. Last weekend, the team was saddled with a 38-7 loss at Utah, marking the lowest point total of the campaign for SDSU.

Last year, the Rebels lost to the Aztecs by a score of 42-21 on the road, which leaves UNLV with an 11-7 deficit in the all-time series.

Ryan Lindley threw a 17-yard TD pass to Dominique Sandifer in the fourth quarter of the meeting with nationally-ranked Utah last week, but that was the extent of the offense for the visitors to Salt Lake City. Lindley converted 17-of-37 for 207 yards and was picked off twice, one of those being returned 30 yards for a touchdown by Utah's Joe Dale. The running game for the Aztecs was almost nonexistent as it processed a mere 55 yards on 29 attempts. But it was just last week that the Aztecs failed to make a distinct impression on the ground because now they are averaging a mere 76 ypg, which has them last in the MWC and 116th in the country. Clearly the offense belongs in the hands of Lindley who has thrown for almost 250 ypg and 22 touchdowns, but he has also suffered 14 interceptions as well. DeMarco Sampson has had some huge efforts this season for SDSU and leads the group with his 59 catches for 802 yards and eight TDs.

With five minutes remaining in the first half the SDSU defense had surrendered 28 points to the home team, so at that point the outcome had already been pretty much decided. On a positive note for the Aztecs, they stood tall in the second half and didn't allow a single point, which is something to applaud given how porous the unit had been earlier in the contest. However, before the squad can get too excited about limiting the output of Utah in the second half, they have to remember that they are still sixth in the conference and 96th in the country in terms of scoring defense, giving up 30.7 ppg at this juncture. Luke Laolagi has been a solid fighter for the San Diego State defense, placing fourth on the team with his 46 tackles and posting two interceptions to go along with a pair of forced fumbles. And yet, even with Laolagi changing the pace of games, this is a team that gained a mere 13 turnovers and ranks last in the league and 110th in the country with a turnover margin of minus-0.91 per game.

Trying to figure out the UNLV offense this season has been tough on a lot of people. Having quarterbacks Omar Clayton and Mike Clausen shuttling in and out of the lineup seems to have caused more harm than good. While it is true that Clayton has converted 60.1 percent of his pass attempts for 195.6 ypg and 12 touchdowns, his 10 interceptions tend to overshadow his positive contributions. In Clausen's case, he's been used more as a running back than anything else, placing second on the team with his 288 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, trailing only Channing Trotter who has 493 yards and eight TDs. Perhaps the only constant for this group from last year has been the performance of wideout Ryan Wolfe who has set several team and conference records for his career and leads the team with 74 grabs for 760 yards this season. But for all his efforts, Wolfe has made it into the end zone just two times in 2009.

Except for a couple of games here and there that dot the season schedule, the UNLV defense has been less than stellar. In fact, it has been downright brutal at times, particularly when giving up 63 points to Nevada and 59 points to BYU in back-to-back games in early October. At that point almost all was lost for this squad because there were only a couple of potential wins left on the board. The run defense has been beaten and bruised, allowing a lofty 231.2 ypg which ranks the group last in the Mountain West and 115th in the country this week. The pass efficiency defense has a ranking of 152.46 and there only a handful of teams in the country giving up more than 33.2 ppg, so there's a lot that needs to be addressed in the off season as they Rebels find a new leader to follow.

Given how badly the UNLV defense has performed this season, it only makes sense that Lindley take advantage and goes over the top as much as possible as he guides the Aztecs to a rare road win.

Predicted Outcome: San Diego State 35, UNLV 17

GAME NOTES: The USC Trojans have dropped to 24th in the most recent AP poll, and they will attempt to get on track against the UCLA Bruins in Pac-10 action.

UCLA has been arguably the nation's streakiest team this season. After opening the season with three straight wins, the Bruins proceeded to lose their next five outings. Fortunately, the team has gone on another streak, stringing three straight wins together to move to 6-5 overall and become eligible for a bowl game. The Bruins bettered their Pac-10 mark to 3-5 with a 23-13 decision over Arizona State in front of the home crowd last weekend.

For most programs, a 7-3 record would be a source of pride, but for USC, it is a symbol of disappointment and perhaps a fall from dominance. The Trojans have lost two of their last three outings, and they have been idle since getting hammered by Stanford on November 14th by a 55-21 final. They will close out the regular season with Arizona next weekend, but the fact that Pete Carroll's team will not be playing in a BCS bowl game is tough to swallow for fans and players alike.

USC leads the all-time series with UCLA by a 43-28-7 margin, and Carroll is 7-1 against the Bruins since taking over as head coach of the Trojans.

UCLA has reason to be proud of its effort against Arizona State last weekend, but it should be pointed out that the offense didn't play well. The Bruins finished with only 292 total yards, including 131 rushing yards on 36 attempts, and they failed to score an offensive touchdown. Kevin Prince took the snaps for the Bruins, and he completed just 15-of-31 passes for 161 yards. Fortunately, he wasn't intercepted.

Give a ton of credit to the UCLA defense, as two touchdowns in the first half were the difference in the game. First, Alterraun Verner intercepted a pass and racked 68 yards for a touchdown to give the Bruins a 7-0 lead. Then, in the second quarter, Akeem Ayers put the club up by a 17-7 margin with a nine- yard fumble return for a score. The pass defense did yield a couple of long touchdowns, but UCLA played well against the run and got the job done overall.

"As a program, you have to learn to crawl before you can walk," said UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel after the win over Arizona State as he addressed the student section. "Next week, let's see if we can't run a little bit."

Overall this season, UCLA is scoring a modest 22.6 ppg while generating 340.9 total ypg. The Bruins have struggled to move the ball on the ground, as they are rushing for a mere 114.8 ypg at a clip of 3.5 yards per carry. The fact that only 19 total offensive touchdowns have been scored in 11 games is a sign of a stagnant offense. Prince has completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,739 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions, while fellow quarterback Kevin Craft has been mediocre as well. There are no standouts present at either the tailback or receiver positions.

Fortunately, UCLA has been able to hold opponents to 20.6 ppg and 338.5 total ypg. The Bruins don't excel against either the run or the pass, but they have been fairly solid against both means of attack. The defense has certainly been opportunistic, as it has registered 17 interceptions to date to go along with 10 fumble recoveries and 22 sacks. Kyle Bosworth leads the Bruins with 70 total tackles, and Brian Price has recorded a staggering total of 20.5 TFLs, including seven sacks. As for Rahim Moore, he has intercepted nine passes in 11 games, seemingly making him a lock for All-America honors.

USC turned the ball over four times against Stanford last time out, including three interceptions for freshman quarterback Matt Barkley. He completed 21- of-31 passes for 196 yards with one touchdown, and that effort simply wasn't good enough. Joe McKnight rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown in the loss, as he showed off some of his explosiveness. Unfortunately, USC had the ball for fewer than 24 minutes.

"This isn't what we grew up watching," Barkley said. "I'm not used to this....I don't know what to think right now."

Stanford gashed the USC defense for 325 rushing yards two weeks ago, as the Cardinal was able to average 6.5 yards per carry. In all, the Trojans yielded 469 yards and seven touchdowns, a truly embarrassing effort.

Overall this season, USC is averaging 27.5 ppg and 400.2 total ypg, solid numbers that fall short of what has come to be expected of the Trojans. Barkley got off to a solid start this season, but he has declined in recent weeks. He has completed a modest 57.9 percent of his passes for 2,035 yards and 11 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. McKnight has rushed for 932 yards and eight touchdowns on only 143 carries, and it remains a mystery why Carroll does not give the speedster the ball more often.

USC's defense should not be judged on the poor performance against Stanford, as the team is limiting opponents to 21.7 ppg and 347.1 total ypg this season. The Trojans have been tough against the run, with the exception of last game, as they are limiting foes to 3.7 yards per attempt and 135.6 ypg. There has been some trouble slowing down the pass, however, and there have been just 16 total takeaways mustered by USC this season. Taylor Mays continues to pace USC in tackles with 73, but the highly overrated safety hasn't made hardly any impact plays this season.

"We came out there, and there was something wrong," Mays said after the loss to Stanford. "It is very disappointing. It's almost sickening. To be a senior and leave a legacy like this, it's sickening."

It has been a long time since we have seen the Trojans struggle to this level. Carroll is an outstanding coach, and he will right the ship for USC.

Predicted Outcome: USC 42, UCLA 20
