As for the whole of this thread - I hate defending Bama but what in the world is this thread really complaining about? 100% on the Bama side of this one. Everyone plays cupcakes. A lot of SEC teams schedule Bye Weeks before the Bama game every year.

I'm pretty damn sure that every single solitary Bama fan capable of rational thought was ecstatic to have a cupcake Mercer game on Saturday so that some of the players could try to get back to 100% for the Iron Bowl and potential SECCG.

And FWIW - Sportsaholic - the whole "omg you paid for season tickets and got a Mercer game," a little food for thought:

Lots of people can't afford season tickets or are on waiting lists at some bigger schools. The people who DO have season tickets and have the cunty attitude you seem to about attending a game vs. a school that isn't worthy of your time - They will give these tickets away to families and friends who drive up to college towns with their kids and take their sons/daughters to a football game. it's a great atmosphere for that because you don't have to worry about obnoxious drunks and they're also normally during the day which is also family friendly. I guess if money is tight or something then you could be mad that you wasted all that face value on some tickets that you gave away as a gift for some kids to have a great time. Man that would be a shitty feeling :142smilie

I'm pretty sure they signed on to play whoever their coach and athletic department tells them to and do so with a smile and no complaints because they're receiving a free education and a chance to play football professionally.

Do you think NFL teams are gonna pass over Bama players in this year's draft because they played Mercer? :lol: I'm not sure you've thought any of your posts in this thread through.

They played UT Chattanooga last year. Somebody should have told the NFL owners that drafted the TEN Bama players last year that they played a cupcake. People don't weigh that kinda thing nearly enough in their draft evaluations!!!!!!

LSU..Bama has beat them 7 straight times..at some point for the other team to be taken as a serious rival to a SEC and National Championship they have to defeat Bama..Well 7 chances...now they are a weak sister too

Ole Miss 10-3 in 2015 their claim to fame..well that and some other stuff


Auburn 12-2 in 2013 ...lost 16 games these last 3 seasons

Like many others have said...It ain't all that tuff a road for Bama to drive on anymore.

Doesn't mean that they will not end up Champs..Doesn't mean they aren't the best team in college football..

Playing Mercer now is not a deserved break..It's a cupcake break in November before playing Auburn all by design.

I agree that the SEC has been down for a few years. In that same vein you could say that the SEC in these down years is finally on par with most other conferences in the country :shrug: People got used to the SEC having 3-5 LSU/Bama/Auburn/UF/UGA all in the top 10-15 every year there for a while in the mid-late 2000s. I'd love to hear someone make a case for another conference that was as strong as the SEC for a span of time. To my knowledge it hasn't happened at least not in recent memory back to the 90s.

I'd compare Bama's past few years schedule to the Pete Carroll USC dynasty. You wanna look back at the Pac10 from 02-08 and tell me he was playing a hard schedule :mj07: There was One, maaaaaaybe Two, other good teams in the P10 each year - Washington State a couple years, 2 Aaron Rodgers Cal teams, UCLA, maybe ASU 1 year, and then the conference actually got a consistent competitor in Oregon under Kelly as Carroll was on his way out.

The whole conference grading thing is stupid to me. There's not a powerhouse conference this year and hasn't been for a few years.

ACC - Clemson and Miami
B12 - OU ..........space............. TCU
B10 - OSU, Wisconsin, PSU
Pac12 - eeeeeh..... Bueller? ............Bueller???
SEC - Bama, Auburn, UGA

There's just no reason to point fingers at schedules. Nobody is gonna get left out of the playoffs that deserves to make it in. And if a team blows through a soft schedule and makes it in the playoffs they'll get exposed.

IE...Notre Dame v Bama a few years ago
Ohio State v Clemson last year ,,Penn State playing way better than OSU last year, yet OSU got in.

This is my case . I have 4 kids and can't afford season tics for 6 people . These are the games I can get my whole family in for 150$ .. glad you pointed this out

First off I don't understand why you are taking this so personally, this is just my opinion I never said "YOU MUST AGREE".......So take a deep breath and relax,it's going to be alright I promise. This isn't about you the fan it's about the higher ups at Bama and doing the right thing and not penciling in teams like Mercer where there is ZERO to gain outside of a W from it.

By the way Bama is not Auburn, Miami, Clemson, Wis, Ohio St, Penn St, Georia, TCU, CFla, ND....IT'S BAMA, a program that can draw just about any Blue Chip player in the country to strap on the Crimson & White for just by being BAMA. They didn't gain that notoriety by playing the Mercer Bears of the football word, no disrespect to those kids who play, they are developing a program and took the $600,000 check and ran....

And by the way, Maine didn't play CFla this year, but a Maine/CFla game is at least a potential competitive show for a half.....Hell the 4-6 Black Bears would have also put a hurting on Mercer and I can guarantee you the fans in Maine would be asking the question, why schedule this game?

I am not sure how many teams have ever played two number one teams in a three week span?

I don't know about that specifically, but Wisconsin played teams ranked in the top 8 in the country for 5 of their first 8 games last year.... that was a crazy schedule!

Speaking of schedule, everyone's favorite whipping boy for soft schedule, Wisconsin, now has the 55th ranked schedule according to Sagarin. Who is behind them? Alabama, at #63.

That should shut up the talking heads about Wisky's schedule. So much of schedule is out of your control - conference schedule, and even non-conference, as the non-con games are scheduled years in advance. BYU was a 10 win team when Wisky scheduled them - who knew they'd blow this year?

But Florida Atlantic is a quality team that Wisky beat NC. Who knew they'd be good?

But there never is an excuse to scheduling Mercer. Big difference between the Big 10 and Big 12 versus the SEC. The first two leagues play 9 game conference schedules, whereas the SEC only plays 8 - which allows them to schedule a Mercer before their big game of the year. Makes life a lot easier....

OK, Wisconsin played Florida Atlantic - ranked #55 by Sagarin. Right next to Texas Tech at #54. A quality team, but certainly not a great team.

Mercer is ranked #151.

Trying to compare these 2 games is laughable. Especially when it is played - deliberately before a big rivalry game for ALA, so they can get healthy. The Big 10 doesn't get those advantages. Nor does the Big 12.

Ok,,I have found out why,,,The Mercer AD called and said the program was shutting down unless they could raise some money and would Bama please play them and pay them 600,000.00,,,And since Bama is so kind hearted they did,,,,Now this is solid info cause the guy that was pumping my gas told me and his cousin sister knows a guy that works for the store where saban shops. Now all y'all dumb asses that wants us to play anybody other than Mercer look at those Mercer kids in the eyes and tell them that the dream is OVER...Program is cancelled due to being broke.
