Letting the Buckethead thread slide, though I still recommend his work, especially if you like guitar-oriented rock.

In here, I'm hoping to get suggestions from others regarding music. Any type...Rock, Classical, Jazz, anything that you're into. Tell me some of your favorites--anything that you think is essential to a solid collection.

My recommendations are going to go like this: I'm going to go through the alphabet and each day I am going to recommend (up to) 8 tracks. I'll list 3 more common tracks, 3 more obscure ones, 1 instrumental, and I've decided that I'm going to add a Buckethead pick each day as well (can come up with 26 no problem). After I get to Z I should have between 150 and 200 of my own personal favorites listed.

You'll get absolutely no filler from me here--everything that I suggest is going to be songs that I either love or really like a lot (if there's a difference). As a result, there may be the odd letter (e.g. X) where I can't come up with 7 that I adore, but I'll be sure to reach 150 picks no problem. I'll probably stick to rock n' roll, myself, as that's what I know best and that's what I love most. I do have a couple hundred classical tracks but I'm the farthest thing from an expert on that type of music so if I can get some good recommendations in here then I will pursue them.

Without further ado:

A

*Aerosmith - Lord of the Thighs (4:14)
*Animals - House of the Rising Sun (4:31)
*Allman Brothers - Whipping Post (5:22)

*Acrimony - Find the Path (4:08)
*Alice In Chains - Frogs (8:16)
Acid Bath - Scream of the Butterfly (6:16)

*Amboy Dukes - Below the Belt (7:03)
--I should add...this band was Ted Nugent's first band...also check out his solo track Stranglehold--definitely worth a score

*Buckethead - Mrs. Beasley (3:57)
--released just under the title Giant Robot, as opposed to Buckethead - Giant Robot (he actually has his own disc by that name, but the one shown below is what you should get; the tunes Scraps and Scapula are also worthwhile, as is the whole disc, really--check out this one tune, for sure...Mrs. Beasley

e83931e52jo.jpg

*Best Bets
--upbeat track in Aerosmith
--raunchy track in Acrimony
--bluesy tracks are The Animals, Allman Brothers, and Buckethead
--psychedelic tracks are the Amboy Dukes instrumental, Alice in Chains and Acid Bath (the latter sounds much like The Doors)

I'm clueless when it comes to free internet tunes, but I recently re-discovered "Life of Illusion" by Joe Walsh. What a solid tune. This would be a perfect cover tune for Widespread Panic or any Reggae band.

Now we're talkin'.

Joe Walsh is totally cool.

I've got Life of Illusion on my HD.
Some other Walsh faves of mine include
15 Years
Life's Been Good
Rocky Mountain Way
The Confessor
Time Out
and maybe my fave...
Turn to Stone

If you dig Walsh also check out the James Gang, especially
The Bomber
and
Funk #49

As far as I'm concerned, too, he WAS the Eagles...they were garbage without him. Don Henley is okay but no way they go Platinum without Walsh doing his thing. Hotel California was Guitar Player magazine's 8th greatest guitar solo of all time (check out their website...I think that they still have the list up).

Thanks a lot for the contribution.
Good Stuff.

Go Rockies!

OK ... eschewing the obvious bands here in favor of some killer lesser known stuff:

Agnostic Front - Time Has Come (mid-80's hardcore)

The Alarm - The Stand (based on the Stephen King book ... very cool track)

Marc Almond/Foetus - Slut (Soft Cell singer teams up w/ Foetus ... this one's industrial and absolutely brilliant)

Anal C*nt - I Got An Office Job For The Sole Purpose Of Sexually Harassing Women (unlistenable really, but you gotta love the title)

APB - Shoot You Down (criminally ignored early 80's postpunk ... killer bassline)

Archers Of Loaf - Web In Front (great indie rock)

Archers Of Loaf - Smokin' Pot In The Hot City (instrumental)

Ash - Girl From Mars (Pop punk from Ireland - great combination of catchy and crankable)

Okay Exrap.,,,,,Here's the deal:

You are one of the very few posters that I looked forward to reading your posts everyday for baseball, in return I will be happy to oblige your request. I have been involved with music forever.Played in bands in Jr. High, high school, and college and then worked in radio and DJ'd in titty bars for years. I started collecting MP3's about 10 years ago and have over 7500 files. NO country, rap, hip hop or classical. I do cover the rest of the spectrum. I have boat loads of COver tunes that are "not" live versions which suck because the recordings are so bad.( There are a few exceptions when it was a planned recording.) The covers I especially dig are the ones that the band covering it does something different with the song without changing the integrity of the original. Also good acoustic recordings of original "plugged" versions. I will not be as structured as your day by day alphabetical delivery, yet I will give you a wide variety of things to check out. You will like some and you may find others disturbing, everybody's taste is different. The way I have been turned on to new(new to me, not just put out) is by browsing others that have a song or artist that I appreciate and is not of the norm. They usually have others on their hard drive that I have yet to be exposed to, and I will download anything that I am not familiar with and then sift through it usually finding 1 out of 10 that I really dig and that starts a whole new branch to start searching. Just because you haven't heard of somebody doesn't mean it isn't any good. That being said, I will give you some ideas today. I will probably add some more later, but this should get you started............And thanks once again for all of the time that you take to post here as well, it is greatly appreciated. Here goes: Most of my stuff is based on good guitar work, rather than harmonica or piano.

First off you have mentioned that you like bluesy stuff. If you have never heard any Joe Bonamassa, get some today! The first song to check out should be:

Blues Deluxe

After that, anything from any of his CD's except the 2006 release (You & Me) very dissapointing, but the others are awesome:

A New Day Yesterday
Blues Deluxe
So, It's Like That
Had To Cry Today

Continuing on the bluesy side of things, there is a band form up near YYZ's parts that were never national, but have some great stuff as well and they're called the

Chris Aaron Band

Another really solid guitarist in more of a jazz based mood is

Jeff Golub

He started out years ago as Billy Squier's lead guitarist, but sure has come a long way since then. Check out his rendition of

Moon River

(Yeah, I know what you are
thinking. Well quit thinking and download it, it is incredible if you dig great guitar work.) Anything else by him is pretty solid as well. Another guy along that same genre is:

Chris Standring

I'm gonna give you a list of covers that you need to check out, some are a bit more difficult to locate than others, but they are well worth the effort:

Nobody ever cares what music other people like. It's kind of like listening to someone talk about their fantasy team. ...They do however find humor in people's thoughts on Agent.

I like anything pre-2004 from The Wiggles.

Awright!

Just woke up--a couple of hours pre-gametime, and this is the first thing I checked after turning on my comp. Looks like I'll get some killer action after all.

smurphy...got to disagree...I LOVE hearing about other's faves in music--especially if it's rock n' roll. I'm always into new experiences in this regard.

Keyser Soze...your post insists that I get a new downloading session (along with another kind of "session") going. I, too, have often browsed others file lists when they have something that I like; that's probably been the way that my collection has increased the most--works great when they have a good feed AND they have a great collection.

Bonamassa, aye? Never heard. I might start there. Maybe I'll log in for a couple of pick-ups after the ballgame is done. Kinda need to clear up some space on my drive (1.5 gigs free) but surely I've got room for 20 or 30 new tracks.

I appreciate the kind words, too.
After being mostly a lurker for the previously 5 years, I've really poured my heart out into MJ's this baseball season. Been a lot of fun but a hell of a lot of work (this part isn't).

I'm going to add my B's as soon as the Rockies take the lead. Hopefully they can cash some early off of Sir Beckett. B's will be tough as I've got countless killer tracks to chose from.

Thanks for the contributions.
I'd give up the gambling before giving up the tunes.

Thanks for the nice remarks as well!

Looks like we need to take Game #2 and then head back to Colorado with a split.

You can get my email addy from Jack if you need anything else. I am always glad to return the favor.

Even if you want I can burn a bunch of MP3's to a disk and send them on up, but you have no room on the hard drive, not sure if that will help. Juat let me know.

score this disc

score this disc

The card's are bad
The luck's been had
And there's nothing left to smoke.
Will I be back tomorrow for the punchline of the joke?

(James Gang, The Bomber)

1-3 in the NHL and easily my worst play in the baseball playoffs so far. Not my day for the gambling. I've finally got some tunes playing to help me fawgetaboutit.
Won't be easy.
The sickest part of it all is that I might just try these NL tools for game #2.

Turning to the tunes.

Hey Keyser, I'll ask Jack about the e-connect and then drop you a word. Might take me a few days but I'd be interesting in sharing some tunetalk and maybe some 'capping words. Tempting on the disk score but let me see what kind of luck I have trying to score the tunes first. I used to use winmx and loved it. I'm currently using limewire (though not recently) and I haven't had quite the same success; seems a little slower, there's less available and their search function is garbage. Maybe you use another; if so...let me know.

B's are a bit of a challenge as I've got a ton of good tracks on my hardrive. Let me see if I can narrow it down to some real beauties...

B

:padlock: Beatles - Abbey Road medley from side B (album-wise)
--You never give me your money
--Sun king
--Mean Mr. Mustard
--Polythene Pam
--She came in through the bathroom window
--golden slumbers
--carry that weight
--the end
This is possibly my favorite piece of music ever produced. I've gotten into the heavier and more psychedelic stuff as I've gotten older, but this is about as good as rock n roll gets. I think that anyone that doesn't put Abbey Road in their top 10 greatest rock albums of all time has not HEARD Abbey Road. Very highly recommended. This was the last album that the boys actually recorded together and it's a very sad suggestion of just what might have come from them if they'd stayed together....fvck Yoko Ono. Abbey Road also contains Come Together and a slew of other killer tracks. ...and in the end...the love you take is equal to the love you make.

c529812jfk7.jpg

*Black Sabbath - Warning (14:15)...big encore track from the early touring days; contains a pretty impressive guitar solo and just generally kicks ass; off their first disc, self-titled

f57261abwgi.jpg

*Blind Faith - Can't Find My Way Home (3:16)...Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and Rick Grech compose this early super-group; only disc they put out is self-titled and also highly recommended; this track is fairly mellow rock n roll

f11074q3334.jpg

Bardo Pond - Limerick (10:19)...off the disc Amanita, this band is pretty psychedelic; if you're not into 10 minutes of guitar-drenched feedback then avoid this one

*Badlands - Rumblin' Train (5:45)...this band kicks ass but was short-lived due to the death of vocalist Ray Gillen; guitarist Jake E. Lee was Ozzy's replacement for Randy Rhoads (played on the discs Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin); this track is a deadly heavy-blues/hard rocker; the entire first disc, self-titled, is certainly their best

*Blue Oyster Cult - The Vigil (6:27)...love this track...off the disc Mirrors, which wasn't their best but offers up this semi-progressive beauty; other essential tracks from this middle-of-the road band include Before the Kiss A Redcap, Golden Age of Leather and, of course, the popular track Don't Fear the Reaper

instrumental:
*Jeff Beck - Cause We've Ended as Lovers (5:41)...one of several good Beck instrumentals available; this one was his only appearance in Guitar Player's 100 greatest guitar solos, ranked at #99

*Buckethead - Beware of the Holding Funnel (5:32)...off the disc Cobra Strike II, which is excellent throughout; a medium-heavy rocker, it features some fine soloing as does most of his work

I think that's 8. I could add a bunch more B's. A couple of other more obscure artists to seach out are Bakerloo (late 60's heavy rock--might be a tough find), Buffalo (same), the Black Keys (current bluesy two-man duo), Junior Brown (blues), Adrian Belew (guitarist who's played with Zappa, Bowie, the Talking Heads and King Crimson; fairly original in his style), Brant Bjork (former drummer of Kyuss and Fu Manchu) and Black Label Society (with guitarist Zakk Wylde, another former Ozzy guitarist...very raunchy stuff but has a few mellower tunes tossed in, as I suppose most raunchers do).

Bad Company, the Band, Blind Melon, Boston, the Byrds, Budgie, BTO and David Bowie all also have some good tracks that are worth persuing.

sigh...time for me to finish my 'cap for game #2. Have a base 'cap done but I need to give Boston some mojo. Anything less than +150 for Colorado and I think I'll sit on my (now-reduced) money.

Can't win 'em all.
'cept maybe when it comes to good music.

thanks Dr. Fade; I appreciate it; tomorrow(today) I will lose less and make you proud.

wanted to say thanks to godsfavoritedog, too--several I've never heard of so I'll check them out.

Bonus pick for those fond of stoner rock and ambiguity: Kyuss - Space Cadet (7:02)

I too am using Limewire, but will agree that it is not nearly what it used to be. I was a WinMX Guy as well, that was a great program, I really miss it. Plus they alllowed one to block users that only grabbed your music and didn't share anything.

I recently added this program:

http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

It is a must if you are using P2P file sharing programs. Protects against the govt. getting into your stuff.

C'mon Rockies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
