Don?t forget the Cardinals benched Warner repeatedly over the past four seasons. While healthy, Warner once sat behind the immortal Josh McCown. To start the 2006 season, Warner fumbled 11 times and threw five interceptions in a four-game span before getting benched for Matt Leinart. Whisenhunt stuck with Leinart to open the 2007 season, and only fully committed to Warner when Leinart suffered a broken collarbone.

Warner almost didn?t even get a chance to pilot this team. Eight days before the season, after Leinart imploded during an exhibition game, Whisenhunt says he ?stayed up all night? before settling on Warner as his starter. In return, Warner gave his coach his first 16-game season since 2001 ? the last time he was in the Super Bowl.

Jets Waive Punter Ben Graham
Published: Tue, September 16, 2008 - 7:04pm ET

By Randy Lange

09/16 ? The Jets have announced this evening that punter Ben Graham has been waived.

It was a difficult ending to a rough start to the season for the Thunder from Down Under. In the home opener against New England on Sunday, Graham had one of the most ineffective days in his fourth season as the Jets punter. His four punts netted 27.3 yards and the Patriots' ensuing drives after all four kicks started on the Jets 48 or deeper into plus territory.

Graham's best season was probably 2006, when he was reunited with Mangini, who took over as the team's head coach, and had career highs in gross average (44.2) and inside-the-20 kicks (26).

His gross was consistently around 43.7 yards, but his net dropped to a career-low 36.6 last season, and his hang time unofficially was also the shortest of his career. This season, despite seeming to have gotten new life in his leg ? he drilled an 86-yarder in the Green & White Practice at Hofstra Stadium a month ago. But his hangtime suffered on six punts at Miami and then came the Patriots game.

The Jets also have announced that Paul Raymond, the undrafted free agent WR from Brown University, has been released from the practice squad. The team did not have any immediate announcements on who will replace Graham as punter or who will take Raymond's spot on the practice squad

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger practiced effectively during the team's second full Super Bowl week practice session, held mostly in the rain at the University of South Florida Thursday afternoon.

Access to players is restricted to the Pro Football Writers of America's pool reporter at pre-Super Bowl practice sessions, but coach Mike Tomlin denied a Profootballtalk.com report that Roethlisberger has undergone X-rays on his back this week. "Not that I heard,'' said Tomlin, who then asked Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett if he knew of any X-rays on Roethlisberger. Lockett said no. Then Tomlin said: "Ben's health is often the subject of inaccurate reports. He's fine.''

Roethlisberger, 26, was speared in the rib/back area during the AFC Championship Game against Baltimore 11 days ago and did not come out of the game.

He threw the ball well on short and deep routes in Thursday's practice -- including a 40-yard bullet up the right seam to wide receiver Santonio Holmes, and several sharp throws to rehabbing receiver Hines Ward -- even during steady rain.

Ward, who suffered a strained right knee ligament in the title game, practiced for the first time since the knee was wrenched on a first-quarter tackle against Baltimore. Although he ran at perhaps three-quarters speed, he worked with the regular offense and blocked and caught the ball in midseason form. Tomlin said Ward looked "awesome'' and reiterated what he has been saying for the past week: Ward will certainly play Sunday against the Cardinals. "He is where I thought he would be today,'' Tomlin said.

Lets just face facts. Ben Roethlisberger is one of the best QBs in the NFL. When it comes to needing that first down and not turning it over give me Big Ben. He is also very difficult to bring down in the backfield.

I have to take him over Kurt Warner in this game.

If Kurt crys and reverts back to some bad habits, there will be hell to pay for Arizona.

Even with Hines Ward not being 100 % physically
the guy is a gamer. Ward will make a differance in this game. On the other side Holmes dont get enough credit for his game changing ability.

Limas Sweed will contribute and not drop any passes thrown his way.

Miller is a awesome player. Blocking for Willie Parker or standing in to get him free on a screen pass. He will probably catch a touchdown.

I think the Pittsburgh offensive line is going to play well in this game. They really excelled in that Ravens game. If Big Ben gets rid of the ball quicker then the Ravens dont sack him in that game.

Arizona has shut down Michael Turner, DeAngelo Williams and Brian Westbrook. But now they got to figure out Willie Parker. He is going to score some touchdowns somehow somewhere in this game.

When Arizona does get the ball James Farrior is a beast on the Steelers defensive side of the ball.

Pittsburghs inside backer Larry Foote is another one to depend on in this game. Aaron Smith is a excellent player. Casey Hampton is a underrated star. Wow just fawking wow.

Then its Polamalu blitzing from all angles.

Polamalu crushing someone over the middle.

Polamalu getting one of the two or three picks Warner will throw in this game.

Throw in a few trick plays and going for it on a few fourth downs and we have, well you get the picture.

The only concern I have is that Arizona scores the first touchdown early. It is very difficult to cover the 7 when you are playing from behind. If Pittsburgh is protecting a lead late, this game should be in the bag.

All I have to think about is Steeler defense. Arizona will be lucky to score a field goal in the first half . The bloody bastids.

GO STEELER NATION !

TAMPA ? Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed is honest.
"It makes you miserable," Reed says of kicking in the windy conditions and chewed-up turf at Heinz Field.

Reed is serious. "I'm a perfectionist, and that's what I expect out of myself."

He lifts weights and runs with his teammates. His dedication on the field and his attitude off it has earned his teammates' respect. He is the captain of special teams.

"You have to know when it's time to work, it's time to work," Reed says. "But if you're not having fun, you're not living your life."

Including playoff games, Reed, in his seventh NFL season, has made 30 of 34 field goals this season; two have been game-winners. A soccer player as a kid, he didn't start kicking a football until after his junior year of high school and walked on at North Carolina because he wanted to study journalism.

Reed arrived in Tampa with his wild hairdo. Reed promised his teammates at midseason he would dye his hair platinum blond if the Steelers reached the playoffs. He did not dye his goatee because the hairstylist told him it would burn his face. "I would have totally looked like a fool then. I'm only a halfway fool now," Reed says.

Pictures of Reed with women at a Tampa bar this week surfaced. "I was with my teammates, and we had a good time," Reed says. "Taking pictures with somebody is not necessarily a bad thing. I don't care if it's random fans who are guys or hot girls. You just have to be smart."

Reed's believes his personality helped him land the kicking job with Pittsburgh in 2002. Todd Peterson broke his ribs in Week 11 that season, and the Steelers needed a replacement. They brought in four kickers to try out in nasty conditions. Cold. Sleet. Wind.

"We were all right around average. Maybe a little above average," Reed says. "Nobody was spectacular. Nobody was horrible. The thing that pulled me through was I had a smile on my face the whole time, because I couldn't actually believe I was kicking in conditions like that."

Reed has adapted to Heinz Field and was 17 of 19 there this season. "I'm not worried about distance. Just direction. There's times you have to aim outside the uprights for it to come back. ? I wouldn't say I've mastered that field, because nobody can. I don't care who it is."

Says special-teams coach Bob Ligashesky: "As far as I'm concerned, and I'm biased, he's a Pro Bowl player.

"Because if you look at the conditions we play in, and I'll say that home and away, he comes through."

Reed has been so solid for the Steelers that tight end Heath Miller says players automatically add three points to the score before Reed kicks. He is 11-for-11 on playoff field goals since 2004 and welcomes pressure.:00hour

"You live for game-winners. I carry that burden on my shoulders as a kicker," Reed says.

There's the serious Reed.

"At the same, I'd much rather win by 20 points and be partying on the sideline," he says.

But the Steelers allowed just 19.1 yards per kickoff return in 2008, tops in the NFL.

And Santonio Holmes, who returned a punt 67 yards for a TD against the Chargers in the playoffs, has added a needed spark to the return game. Jeff Reed is among the league?s most reliable kickers.

OPINION

But the Steelers will be ready. If there?s one thing that could be gleaned from a news-free week it?s that Pittsburgh is locked-in mentally. Talking to outside linebacker James Harrison on a few occasions, I got the feeling he wanted to play this thing last Monday.

Asked about the secrets to the Steelers' defense, Harrison said, ?There isn?t some magical fairy dust we sprinkle on each other. We just play the game.?

And when the game is played, the Steelers will win. Here?s why.

The LeBeau factor

Dick LeBeau, 71-year-old defensive coordinator for the Steelers, and the man credited with being the godfather of the zone blitz knows Whisenhunt from their years spent together in Pittsburgh. Whisenhunt and his offensive coordinator Todd Haley would like to engage in skullduggery.

LeBeau is the one guy in the league who will have a feel for what The Wiz and his staff will try to pull. That doesn?t mean LeBeau knows when the gadget play is coming. But he will have the defense on alert and they will minimize that part of the Cardinals offense which has been a big factor in these playoffs.

LeBeau will also have his blitzes and coverages working in concert against Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner. Warner, like most of us, hates to be hit. His defense mechanism for that is a good one. He?s got a quick mind, quicker release and excellent accuracy. But the zone blitz is designed to make a quarterback pause and process whether what he?s seeing is legit or not. And that will be the difference. No matter how good receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin are, it won?t matter because the Steelers are going to force a bad game from Warner.

Experience

Many of the Steelers have been playing in games like this their entire careers. High-stakes games in the AFC North, playoff games, prime-time games, a Super Bowl three years ago. They know the drill.

The Cardinals just kind of wandered on stage and looked up to see the spotlight on them. Sure, Warner?s seen some big games and Whisenhunt can explain what to expect, but this is waaaaaay out of their comfort zone. There?s a tempo to getting ready for a Super Bowl that must be respected. Because of the longer pregame delay between warm-ups and the kickoff, because of the longer halftime show, because of the pomp of the day, keeping emotions in check until you want them to crescendo is a major factor.

The Steelers are ready. Arizona?s not.

Strength of schedule
Let?s be realistic. The Cardinals are fighting up a class in this one. Hat-tippage to them for getting through the Falcons, Panthers and Eagles in these playoffs. Each of those teams had something they do well entirely taken away from them by Arizona. But the Steelers are a breed apart.

Nothing Arizona?s offense has seen compares to Pittsburgh?s defense. Arizona?s defense does not compare to the ones that Pittsburgh has already gotten through (San Diego and Baltimore). As Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon told me when asked about this matchup, ?A great defense that has two weeks to prepare for any offense is usually going to win.?

Big Ben factor
Do the Cardinals have a superior offense? Yes. But the Cardinals' offense isn?t going against the Steelers' offense, is it? It?s going against Pittsburgh's defense. So no matter how many eye-bugging stats from Fitzgerald, Boldin and Steve Breaston get rolled out, no matter how many ?big plays? are anticipated, they don t necessarily have the edge the stats would indicate.

In fact, Ben Roethlisberger may be the most explosive player on the field because of his ability to thrive when a play is disrupted. Roethlisberger did just that against the Ravens, who have a pretty disciplined defense. Don?t expect Arizona to be able to deal with Big Ben once he starts freelancing.

I like the way this guy thinks.

Linebackers

LOLB: LaMarr Woodley
Possesses the strength of Hercules and the athleticism of Hermes. That explains his 15.5 sacks in 17 starts.

LILB: James Farrior
The backbone of Pittsburgh?s front seven. Excellent in coverage and still surprisingly swift against the run.

RILB: Larry Foote
Hard-hitter who takes on blocks as well as any player in football.

ROLB: James Harrison
Well-deserving of his 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

Secondary

CB: Ike Taylor
Drops interceptions like they?re scorching hot plates. But his stifling man coverage is vital to the success of this unit.

SS: Troy Polamalu
Listen up, Ed Reed fans: This is the best all-around safety in football.

FS: Ryan Clark
Some experts say his reliability in coverage is what allows this scheme to function.

CB: Deshea Townsend
On his own, he?s closer to ?average? than ?great.? But as part of a group, he?s closer to ?great? than ?average

Top reserves

DL: Travis Kirschke
Tremendous contributor off the bench. Steelers love to use him in a variety of ways.

LB: Lawrence Timmons
Could probably start for any other defense in the NFL. :scared

hope Steelers dont need this guy but glad he is there

NB: Bryant McFadden
Hasn?t become the stud that so many expected, but he?s blossomed in his niche as a role player.

O-Line

LT: Trai Essex
Has done a splendid job filling in for the injured Marvel Smith and Max Starks.

LG: Chris Kemoeatu
His improvement throughout the season might be the single biggest reason this offense has clicked down the stretch.

C: Justin Hartwig
After injuries and poor play led to his being dumped in Carolina, he?s regained his nastiness and solidified the interior of this callow O-line.

RG: Darnell Stapleton
Utterly untested second-year pro who replaced injured vet Kendall Simmons in early fall. Shaky at times, but has vastly exceeded expectations.

RT: Willie Colon
His extensive raw talent continues to cook well. Could start garnering Pro Bowl consideration next year.
