CANBERRA, Australia (CNN) -- Australia's conservative Prime Minister John Howard said Sunday that victory for Democratic Sen. Barack Obama and his party in next year's presidential election would be a boon for terrorists.

"If I were running al Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008, and pray, as many times as possible, for a victory not only for Obama, but also for the Democrats," Howard said, speaking on "Sunday," a TV show on Australia's Nine Network.

March 2008 is when Obama has said he would bring U.S. troops home from Iraq, according to legislation he introduced in the Senate.

Obama, who represents Illinois in the U.S. Senate, declared his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in a speech on Saturday in his home state. (Obama makes his announcement )

Howard -- who faces reelection this year -- is a staunch supporter of President Bush and committed Australian troops to help the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Like Bush, Howard has come under increased criticism at home for supporting the unpopular war.

Australia has more than 1,000 troops in and around Iraq, many in non-combat roles.

Obama, campaigning in Iowa, told reporters Sunday he's flattered that one of Bush's allies "started attacking me the day after I announced (his presidential run) -- I take that as a compliment."

The Democratic presidential hopeful said if the Australian prime minister was "ginned up to fight the good fight in Iraq," he needs to send another 20,000 Australians to the war.

"Otherwise, it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric," Obama said.

The Illinois Democrat dismissed the suggestion that his election would help terrorist groups, noting that even the Bush administration's "own intelligence agencies have indicated that the threat of terrorism has increased as a consequence of our actions over there."

When asked about Howard's comment, a senior White House official voiced support for the Australian leader.

"Prime Minister Howard knows that setting a timeline for a withdrawal sends the wrong signal to our enemies and sends the wrong signal to the Iraqi people," the official told CNN.

MUNICH, Germany (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain blasted a report in the Washington Post that said the Arizona Republican, who has campaigned against the use of "soft money," is using just those kinds of funds to support his GOP presidential nomination.

McCain told CNN the article is "worst hit job that has ever been done in my entire political career."

According to the story published on Sunday, campaign and IRS records show several of McCain's finance co-chairmen "have given or raised large donations for political parties or 527 groups."

Named after tax code, a 527 is a tax-exempt organization created to influence political campaigns. "Soft money" refers to a type of unlimited contribution to these organizations from corporate and wealthy donors.

"In all, the finance co-chairs have given at least $13.5 million in soft money and 527 donations since the 1998 election," the Washington Post reported.

McCain denied he planned to raise or use any money from independent non-profit 527 groups, which was alleged by the article.

A leader in the charge to limit the use of "soft money" in political campaigns, the senator co-wrote the 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill that, for the first time, prohibited political parties from raising "soft money."

He has also sought to regulate independent 527 groups from raising and spending millions on "issue" ads that are often thinly veiled attacks on candidates.

These groups played an influential role in the 2004 presidential election because of the McCain-Feingold regulations on soft money.

McCain "has been and remains committed to 527 reform, as evidenced by the fact that just two weeks ago he introduced a bill in Congress to restrict contributions to 527s," said Brian Jones, a senior adviser to McCain and spokesman for his presidential exploratory committee.

"He also understands that if neither the FEC (Federal Election Commission), the courts or Congress enforce laws that already exist to govern 527s, they will continue to operate outside legal restrictions on the amounts of money that can be contributed to campaigns," Jones told CNN.

Scotty can you notify mr McCain that this is nothing like what Rove and the Bushies did to him with their scumbag move in the 2000 primaries by notifying the South about his black baby. That would be a real hit job not this. since he has selective memory maybe in time he will forget this also.

This is a adopted black baby he raised with his wife.

Of course in politics they make it sound like he was boinking the cook or something.

More southerners should adopt, the world would be a better place to live.

again....

Edwards will take this

Hope that was some attempt at humor Chadman

If you mean the Jesse Ventura post was an attempt at humor, it was more an attempt to illustrate that sometimes strange things can happen, and people can get motivated in different ways. Ventura had no experience, and little shown intelligence, and he carried the day with people fed up with politicians and the status quo.

Ross Perot and Steve Forbes have motivated a lot of people in the past. Just think when a really good candidate hits the middle, has some experience, and can look and talk a good game.

For those still dismissing a woman and/or a black for President...I think you are mistaken. I think the Bush administration has set the table for anything to happen this election, although I do think Obama's lack of experience will hurt him in the long run.

No shot Gary they wouldn't win one state in the south. If its gonna be Hillary in my opinion she has to go with Wesley Clarke. Southerner's don't like Hillary because of her Kankles and they are still not ready to vote for a black guy and probably never will be. All it takes is one racist add like the one in Tenn last election and that ticket would be finished. Harold Ford pandered to that religious bullshit as well as guns and he still got drilled. So sad because he is a solid guy.

i`m just telling you the strongest ticket.....you don`t have to buy it....

the HUGE untapped female vote that hillary will get....and blacks would turn out in droves.....both demographics are notoriously unrepresented in major elections....not to mention the guilt-ridden/secularist/anti-semitic honky`s like the ones we see on this board...

who would hillary use?...howl gore?.....forget it....the guy couldn`t even pull his own state....

edwards?....maybe....but he`s another loser....

clarke?...i think i`d vote for RAMSEY clarke before i`d vote for wesley clark...and why is the name clark(e) synonymous with 5th columnists?...very odd...

and obama is muslim/christian...he`s black/white.....i wouldn`t be surprised if this chameleon`s part mexican.....then you can throw in the illegal vote.....

it won`t matter,though...obama won`t even look at hillary after her crew is done with him....

Barack Obama is my favorite for 08'. I support everything he has said so far, especially his stance in Iraq. Defintly seems capable of running this country. And defintly cant be worse than the guy right now. However I cant see him winning because the south would just destroy his chances as much as I hate to say it. This country is still part racist in some parts

I think Barack would win before Hillary - although I'm not sure that would be best. I'd love to see the GOP get stupid enough to snub Gulianni - so that he could run as an Indie and completely screw things up.

1. What was Bush's experience before you voted for him?

2. Didn't Bush also say he was not going to be involved in Nation Building?

3. How's that Iraq thing working out for ya?
++++++++++++++++++++++++

1 I'm guessing that the largest % of presidents were governors previous--and having father that was pres would add to experience

2 Don't understand your question

3. I think war went very well intially--and can't think of one person that saw the civil issues coming of this magnitude--and no way to solve it--no more than we can solve gang rivalries in inner cities here. There is no way to stop suicide bombers anywhere--we're fortunate they are not here YET

now some questions for you--

1 Do you think it coincidence we had numerous embassy bombings-ship bombing two assualts on trade center prior to our retaliation of 911 and none since?

2 Who has proven the better ally of fighting terrorist Saudi-Pakistan-Yemen or the French.

Your last question is easy. Pakistan the other three are useless and back stabbers. And Pakistan we better hold our breath. There's been two tries on there Presidents live last year.
Yes nothing here at home for over 5 years. But we must have had some attempts. Only reason I say that is the move to red from orange every other three months by old Homeland Security director. Or was he just trying to scare us? Could be. As for nothing here for 5 years. Thank God. But lets not fall a sleep these guys take there time.

Dogs, why is you think that Al-Qaida has not attacked. What would Bush do if they did? I mean, say they do decide to attack on our soil again during Bush's term. What's he gonna do? Other than make Bush look bad.

Wayne, I addressed your assertations regarding the terrorists attacked over the last few years and the help the Saudis have given us in the other thread, when you brought it up there. I'll save a repost, and just ask you to refer to that one, for now. I reserve the right to come back here if you continue to hide, though...

Yeah, who could have seen THAT coming? Tribes that have been fighting for a thousand years in a region/country where religion is all that matters?

Sure seems logical that the opressed majority and the minority that has been killing them for 40 years would get along just fine once the control was removed.

At least you finally admit that there is no way to solve it. So what is our current mission there?

To stop the violence? Yeah right, that will happen.

So Iran is sending in weapons. So lets go beat on them to. Hold it lets go beat on Saudi to there sending in weapons to. Holly cow so is Turkey and Syria. Lets fight em all nuke the chit out of the whole area. That would make all the necons sleep better. And if something happens here at home. What do we do. Were already in Afghanistan and Iraq. That's where Bush said they all are. I think Bush would do him self a favor by not talking out in public. He even got his drinking Buddy Putan pissed at him.
