A Brave is a Native American warrior.

Black Hawk was a War Leader of the Sauk tribe.

A Redskin is a slur used to describe a person of Native American descent.

An example with the Japanese culture would be

A team named the Samurais (famous warriors)

A team named the Nobunagas (famous leader)

And a team named the yellow skins (slur)

Actually you guys are blinded by your hatred of Hedge on this point. It's a very valid question. If you change Redskins, then the question has to be asked about the other team names and logos. It's not at all obvious where to draw the line.

You are likely right about my hatred blinding me on this one. Rich white guys typically have a knack for knowing what is derogatory and inappropriate so I'll leave it to them to figure this one out.

Very good point. What about the logos? Redskins logo *seems* less offensive than Cleveland Indians, for example.

Wikipedia certainly doesn't clear up the argument very much. This is not an obvious issue at all, in my opinion. My dad lived and worked for the BIA in Gallup, New Mexico for over 10 years. The word was used in a friendly way, from what I saw and experienced the several times I was there. Redskins hats and jackets were pretty popular. But maybe I just didn't understand.

Redskins is a badge of honor not a slur

I just hope Dan Snyder stands his ground against these assholes

"the bunker"
simple solution....keep the name and change the logo to a "white" sunburned Swedish hottie......

fans are happy...Snyder keeps the name.... and the brand takes off like a surface to air missile....

My exact response to ya, Smurph.

Logos aren't the issue as much as the name.

While dozens of high schools across America have dropped the name, becoming the Utes or RedHawks or Raiders or Braves or Rams, three with a majority of American Indians in their student bodies have kept the name ?Redskins,? in honor of their heritage.

More, there?s controversy over whether American Indians even find the word offensive. ?Most American Indians say that calling Washington?s professional football team the ?Redskins? does not bother them,? the National Annenberg Election Survey reported in 2004. ?Ninety percent of Indians took that position, while 9 percent said they found the name ?offensive,?? the poll found.

I just heard it is legal for women in Maine to walk around topless in public. Can't we address these hard hitting issues too?

Wrong there my friend......:0074
