Question. Is that an acid stain?
Thinking of having our driveway acid stained... I'm a bit worried it might be a bit to shiny. What are your thoughts of an acid stain entire driveway?

No it isn't an acid stain, it's an overlay, stain and seal. An acid stain degrades the cream coat on your driveway and makes it much more porous. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are going to seal it with a solvent based sealer.

Well the overlay would look better. With an acid stain you are basically etching the existing concrete, cracks and all. You can power wash it and all that but an acid stain simply burns a color into the cream coat and you will still be able to see every little fault but now its a colored fault. They don't look bad but you aren't going to be able to put any design in it and the color is not defined as in an overlay. With an overlay you are basically getting two new coats of polymered cementitious material added to your driveway and it creates an entirely new canvas so to speak. Again, the acid stains aren't bad and yes you can seal them with an emulsion sealer but if you don't fix the cracks it will just crack again.
This week we will try to fix this lady's driveway. She got a shit stamped driveway last August that cost her $10K. Now she's paying me $10K to redo it.
I'm going to have 2 guys out there, each with a scarifier and take 1/2 inch off the top of her driveway and then grind it smooth with diamond grinders.
Then we will lay a new 1/2 inch stamped cobble stone overlay.

Why are you taking a scarifier to it? You are going to regret taking it down a half inch. Is it sealed? If not and it is porous don't take it down you will regret it I promise you. You don't even have to grind a stamp if it isn't sealed. Put down a primer and two coats of thin finish as a skim coat, better yet, put down a skim coat of texture pave then a coat of thin finish and you will be much better off.
Just sayin.
We have to take it off and already did on about 60% of the job until the scarifiers broke down. :lol:
Well, one didn't have good teeth on it and the other just broke down. They'll have 2 more ready tomorrow and we'll knock it out.

Two guys worked a smaller job yesterday and then came to this one at 3pm and helped until 10pm.
I was the mixing station man until they came and saved me. I needed to beat the rain we are expecting later today so wanted to knock this out.
My original plan was to have it finished by Friday.
Ahead of schedule now.
I'll post the completed job tomorrow.
