I am thinking about getting another dog this spring, I currently have a 4 yr old Boxer and he is a awesome animal but I was told by the Vet that Boxers live longer if they have another dog as a companion. The Vet went into a bunch of studies and mumbu jumbo and I am just going to take him at his word that what he said about the dog living a better life with a companion. I am open to getting any type of breed from a AKC breeder but I dont think a smaller dog would fare too well with my Boxer since he weighs about 95lbs and loves to play. I have been checking out some of the breeds at different web sites and cannot decide which breed, I just wondered if anyone out there had any experiences with different breeds and would recommend a breed?

I think as a companion to another dog and the owner, the Golden Retriever is the best. Great personality. Can hold thier own if needed during playtime (obviosly the boxer has a 95 lb head start). Unbelieveably smart. Great with kids if you have any around. Just an overall fantastic dog. My dad used to train bird dogs, labs, and golden retrievers and the GRs were usually the best ones.

German Shepherd is the only one for me.......they are intensley loyal and smart.......(most of them anyway)......last one I had was a real dodo......he would just not get housebroken for some reason but was still a good watchdog........I've had about four of them since the early seventies and we just got another one who is still a puppy.......Shepherd owners know.......they are a hell off a dog

I think Weimeraner's are a great breed. Check out the Labradoodle's as well. I currently have a Chesepeake Bay Retriever, and he's been a great dog, but Chessies have this nasty trait of guarding stuff (they were trained to guard their owner's take of ducks back in the Market days), and he can be a bit mean. Golden's are very nice as mentioned, but I like my dogs to be inside, and Golden's are too messy with that long hair.

I love German Shepherds too for all the reasons statman 02 said. I've had 6 of them now throughout my life. Only problem or complaint is they shed like crazy:mad:

I've had four Germans at different points in my life. Two of them were incredible. Two of them were as dumb as a rock. My cousin has one now that is of the rock variety. Too hit and miss for me.

Chopsticks--you crack me up! That was some funny shit!

6-5 -- I would have never thought that you were an Inside dog type of person. Our hunting dogs were always kept outside (unless extreme weather conditions arose).

Goldens do shed like crazy. Not a good inside dog.

I always heard Weimeraners were smart. I have only been around one that a friend of mine owned, and it is a basket-case. My first (and only so far) experience of that breed was disappointing.

mc- came in this thread to suggest a boxer, but you already have the privilege of owning one. My 60lb female just passed last Tuesday, still find myself looking around the house for her. I have had dogs all my life, could never own anything else but a boxer now. What a tremendous animal, extremely social smart, and doesn't shed at all, extremely clean and incredible companion with children. Owned mine14 years.

For me, Black Lab, Golden Retriever, German Shepard and a amazing dog not mentioned, Rhodesian Ridgeback.

How about a Bullmastiff. I own a 110 lb female and is one of the best dogs I will ever have. Mine is extremely affectionate, loves people and other dogs (although I would say she would rather be around people than dogs), she is both playful and a bed potato. And very intelligent. This breed has really suprised me and I think I will own several more in my lifetime. The hair is short and no real major amount of shedding, easy to bathe.

And contrary to popular opinion, they do not slobber. That is the french Bordeaux mastiff that slobbers all over. Full Mastiffs also slobber but not the bullmastiff.

have 3 baby 1.5 years Milo akita can be very hyper and loves to play rough which he still bites down alittle hard at times but he does not mean to just has strong jaw, very smart lot of engery not bad at all lot of people say they are mean he is just a big baby with strong teeth. lot of work and upkeep folling him around, will always be like that.

2nd in age 3 years old mango female golden retriver very very very smart and just great dog only thing with a golden they want all the attention to be for them she is a big 75 pound baby who wants it her way all the time, need to watch their weight and hips but a great bread of dog.

3rd in age fletcher pound dog and great, he is the best trained and behaved and is the boss of the house, he is a mix betwwen a scottish deer hound and a sheppard, just a great dog wish they all were like him, all he wants is to beloved and get his long walk each day best dog I have ever had, like i said the golden is very very very smart just lot of attention is wanted at all times from her and Milo the akita is lot of work just the type of bread he is and all are great with children but would not rec. a akita if you have small children just because of the way they play can be rough, fletch is the king by far but he is not a breed more of a it, mango the golden makes a very good pet and great with children and all people.

Also all 3 are fixed:) They have a nice big yard to play in out back and gated in with 8 foot wall around house so big dog door and they can come and go as the please, mango likes to catch doves in the yard she has grabbed a few watched her on time sneak up on her belly from behind a pine tree and bam out of no where she sprung and got it, the other few times found it in the yard they pull the feathers off for some reason but don't bite through the bird, and she is a bird dog so just her instinc but a great breed for a family pet.

Have 2 male Bernese Mountain Dogs (7 and 2 years old). They weigh between 110 and 120 pounds.

They are one of the best breeds as far as compatability with other animals, and gentleness with children.

Extremely inteligent, very strong, and like to have jobs to do.

The only thing that may be considered a drawback would be the amount of hair.

I have owned dogs my whole life and have not had a better breed.

Basenji dog would be my choice...does not bark, hardly any hair and cleans itself...

Basenji: Breed of medium-sized hound whose origins can be traced back several thousand years to Africa and the courts of the Egyptian pharaohs. It stands about 17 in. (43.2 cm) high at the shoulders and weighs about 23 lb (10.4 kg). Its short, silky coat may be colored chestnut red, black, or black and tan, with white chest, feet, and tip of tail. The basenji has two unique characteristics: it does not bark but utters a sound that has been described as a chortle or whine, and, in the manner of a cat, it cleans its own body. Possessing a keen sense of smell, the basenji was used in its native Africa as a hunter but is now commonly kept as a house pet
