Hellah,

If you're making the trip to Chicago, make sure you fill up the gas on the toll road into Indiana. There's a stretch from Gary to 290 in the city that if you stop off the exits, you better be packing. It's a mistake that you'll only have to learn once.

Washington, DC/Las Vegas, NV
My list:

1. New Orleans (head and shoulders above the rest....a filthy place, humidity is God-awful, everything is old and in need of repair)

2. Philadelphia (one of the most depressing cities in the country)

3. Newark/Jersey City, NJ (actually worse than the above two, but no one visits this place uless they are headed somewhere else, so it's down the list)

4. Miami (some sections of this town are war zones -- it's one of the few cities I've been in and actually been scared)

5. Washington, DC (home of America's worst local government -- 3/4ths of the city is crime-riden and the services in this city are among the nations worst, once you get outside the Mall)

6. New York City (much better since Guliani cleaned it up, but still pretty awful in many areas)

7. Houston (this is the worst big city in the United States in my opinion.....no one could pay me enough money to live here)

8. Memphis (filthy and poor -- and not much to do off of Beale Street, which is terribly over-rated)

9. Chicago (Might be a nice place if it was about half its size -- too big and miserable winters make this a pretty dirty place)

10. St. Louis (I've been here twice and both times I kewpt asking myself -- why would anyone want to live here?)

Before anyone flames me for my picks, let me note that I personally love to visit New Orleans, I've shopped in S. Phila a number of times and always enjoy it there, and I even have a freind in Jersey City.

Newark has it's own distinctive smell...anyone going there for the first time is advised to wear a gas mask.

LMAO! I swear, Bobby, when I saw the comments about Gary, I was going to post the EXACT same thing about fueling up, because it's a mistake that I *did* learn once. A buddy and I were about 21 driving home from Chicago and 'thought we could make it'. Yeah, we came up about 45 miles short and had to get gas in Gary. It was like 11pm so a lot of places weren't open so we had to drive around for 15 minutes in the city, knowing that any minute we were going to sputter out. I don't think i've ever been so nervous.

I went to San Diego this summer and I thought the downtown area was fine. I didn't see many bums and didn;t get harrassed for change. I loved San Diego, but I'm sure there are parts of it that aren't great.

Let's face it., each city has it's bad side. I agree with Downtown Indianapolis being a nice place..espcecially with the RCA and Conseco FIeldhouse down there.

Great topic

Great topic

More than any other city I've been to, there are so many areas of NYC that just smell like URINE and TRASH. Even in nice parts. Some of the puddles in NYC should be classified as toxic waste. Its gotten better, but it can still be bad.

In B-MORE, there are people who, when stopped at a red light, will open the door of their car, and empty their trash (BK wrappers and whatnot) onto the ground WITH NO SHAME WHATSOEVER. Its unbelievable. Maybe that happens in a lot of cities but since I live in B-MORE, I notice it. I've seen people walk up to their parked car, open the door, empty the trash onto the ground, get in and drive away. How you have such disdain for where you live is beyond me. But, there are areas within the city that are very very nice, so overall its not too dirty. And only some pockets smell a little.

Fells Point can have rancid alcohol odor on SAT or SUN morning.

Cleanest cities I've seen are mostly foreign: calgary, paris (esp. for its size), prague, budapest, salzburg. Prague and Budapest used to have a lot of soot and pollution, but as far as garbage and stink, I didn't notice much. wasn't there for long though. Though, I did see a bum piss right in a publc square one day in Budapest.

In the US, annapolis is nice. Portland ME and portland OR are nice.

That said, I tend to like the dirtier cities I've been to more than the clean ones. Portland, OR has about as little character as possible for a city that size. What a lame place. "but we have such cool brew pubs, and great coffee shops." Oh yeah? Ram it! And just because you wear sandals and have a beard doesn't mean you're not a yuppie.

Don't much care for annapolis either. way too sterile.

I found seattle a little dingy in spots. What got me was a lot of like 20 year old bums with dyed hair. Those are people you just want to kick in the ass and say "get a job."

djv- Respect your opinion, but I liked Bangkok w/ all the Wats and parks. The traffic is the absolute worst that I've experienced, but even Patpong and down by the Chao Phyra river wasn't that bad- IMHO.
I thought Tondo- suburb of Manila was the worst overseas.
As far as stateside I'd have to vote for Gary, IN as the worst. Man it is [freaky even in the daylight.
Freelancc- Hows about Pismo Beach?

That's the thing about Gary, my experience was at 3 PM on a Sunday. And I was still scared sh*tless. Maybe it was driving up to a stoplight and seeing a guy talking in his car, being expressive with his hands and seeing he was holding a gun while driving in the same way I hold a cigarette.

Glad you made it out alive.

Ditto on Santa Barbara. Of course my town is not so bad either. I have been to Portland Oregon twice and like that place alot too. Most of the coast south of Oceaside to LaJolla is nice. Sh*tholes are Barstow, most of LA/Valley, Albacrappie New Mexico except for near the college and Sandia Peak area. Not a well travelled man like most of you but I feel quite confident in saying Baghdad is probably a sh*thole too.
