I will second the Mercury vote, guy was pretty damn good.

As far as James Taylor, that guy is the most overrated singer in the history of music IMO. Listen to his songs, stupid lyrics and cheesy. Plus he is naisly during most of them. My 2 cents.

Mercury had a good voice but he danced like a fag :142smilie but that's another thread.

James Taylor overrated ?? :mj07:

His 1976 album Greatest Hits was certified diamond and has sold more than 11 million copies.

Guess people like cheesy stupid lyrics sung by naisly guys

Just offering my opinion Compadre.

If you want to go by record sales, I could argue that Axl Rose is one of the most talented of all time since Appetite for Destruction sold over 28 million albums. I don't think anybody would agree with me. I like Axl the most of any singer but just because he sold 28 million copies of one album doesn't mean is a 'talented' singer.

What pissed me off about James Taylor is how 'cool' everybody thought it was to say you liked him while we were in college. They knew Fire and Rain and maybe one other song but acted like he was the balls. Lame. Plus the guy is the Cover king of the world, how many covers has he done in his career.

Whatever, not denying his popularity at all but I personally don't get it.

HUGE difference between a band and a solo act.
I don't remember be cool in school but then again I wasn't into JT back then :( Now that I'm more mature I appreciate the finer things in life :brows:

To each their own. Some people don't get it.

I don't get David Bowie or Bono but they continue to sell out.

in pop field, Ella had style and incredible technical excellence--I especially like how she would hit the near center of every pitch. Listen to the Gershwin album she did with Ellis Larkins.

Sinatra never had the technical perfection, but incredible and influential style.

Here's both of them together, digging each other's special abilities:

in opera world: you had near technical perfection matched with unsurpassed interpretive powers with Alexander Kipnis and Ernestine Schumann-Heink (she performs here what is, perhaps, the greatest trill ever recorded!)
