He cheated, so how can he be great ?

I don't have an answer to that. Only that i have never seen another hitter do what he did for so long. For which of those years he was juicing, and which pitchers he faced that were also cheating is impossible to know, but in the current era he stood out imo.

His at bats were special.
It wasn't just his home runs, guy was near impossible to get out. It's hard to compare players from different generations for a variety of reasons (steroids will be one big reason it's going to be impossible for a while), but if you compare him against the performance of other players in his era, he was the best.

Dude hit 370 in 2002. With 46 home runs. And he only had 403 at bats because he also walked 198 times. His on base percentage was 582! He made outs well under 50% of the time he stepped in the batters box. That is insane.

But yeah he juiced, so there's that, for sure.

Bonds was walked intentionally with the bases loaded.

:mj07: :mj07:

But I would never mention him in any debate about the best player ever due to his use of illegal substances.

Remember watching that game live on TV, I think it was in in Arizona. They were up by 2 runs, intentionally walked him, and it worked. I think The Dbacks won the game.

Pedro for pitchers

I think kershaw could be 8 to 10 years down the line but that's just a guess. No one currently is more special.

Gagne as a reliever was the most fascinating and best closer for a two year stretch and watching hitters whiff on 70 and 90 mph with same arm motion was the best display of pitching I love ever seen. But he was a juicer

Pete rose was ultimate player as far as effort...won't say he was the best

Hmmmm. Probably have to go with joe Morgan who I've seen...although I doubt that choice is too popular

I loved watching Griffey Jr in his prime when he was off the DL :mj07:

I saw Fernando pitch a few times in his prime. He had nasty, nasty stuff, and I loved how he looked totally up and away from the batter during his motion. His screwball was incredible.

I still listen to Dibble sometimes on the radio, and I loved watching him close out/setup the closer. That erratic motion was funky, and he brought the heat. He was a lunatic.

Hey GW....Hope you're doing well....

I can name about 5-10 ball players that were better than Henderson....& so can you....

not so sure,bud...the guy was the best leadoff man i ever saw..he was the hub of some very powerful oakland teams for many years..and was on a couple w.s. champions...

he did everything well... all time leader in walks, runs and stolen bases...and he had had excellent power as a leadoff hitter(i believe he retired as a top 100 hiome run hitter, granted more due to longevity...but he still had good power for a smallish guy)....i believe he won a golden glove....he was a guy that the opposing team had to game plan for...you walk him and there was a good chance you just put a man in scoring position...

everybody loves power hitters....but as a complete offensive weapon,i`ve never seen anyone better....and he was extremely durable in his prime....

i think he probably stayed too long...many do...

it`s a subjective opinion...i know i really enjoyed watching him play...

i`ll upset a few more people by saying that george brett may have been the best pure hitter i`ve ever seen....particularly in the clutch

If your list does not contain the name Clemente it's because you aren't old enough to have seen him play or you are ignorant of baseball.

Thread states " Who is the Best Player in Base ball you ever SEEN " I grew up in an American League city & the chances of seeing Roberto on TV were far & few except World Series or All Star games. He is on my list but not at the top. How many times did you see Williams play ?
