We (the family) are packing up in mid June and moving to Port Republic, Virginia.

We made an offer on a house yesterday!:popcorn2

6 acres. We will grow all our own food. Chickens, turkeys, aqua-ponics, the whole bit. I am flying out Tuesday for an interview at a school in the area for basketball coach:00hour

Her family is there, and it's about a 7 hour drive from Indy. Time to get the little ones off the mountain and close to those that matter most.

Port Republic is located in Virginia. Port Republic, Virginia has a population of 1,386.

Hope you like your neighbors!

Best of luck with the move. Do you guys have experience farming, raising animals etc or are you learning on the fly?

Kansas City area for who knows how long....

A beautiful part of VA! I've driven that Skyline drive right by ya plenty of times, runs along a ridge in the Shenandoah Mtns. But I have an english perfessor freind who lives in Hampton, by Newport Beach, straight down I-64 from you. I've spent most my VA time there. Much more familiar with the Low Country, very different from your area of VA.

How on Earth did you hear of Port Republic? I was born and raised in VA and thought I was passing familiar with most of the town names but it was new to me. I see it's near Grottoes and Weyers Cave.... those two are familiar.

Congrats on doing what I'd love to do! It would be nice to be much further off the grid. :)

You'll be about a two hour drive to Charlestown WV if you like slots and ponies. That's about it for gambling other than the lottery...... and bingo.

Welcome to the Old Dominion where the conservatives pretty much rule the roost.

Harrisonburg is where her parents and sister live. Beautiful area. We found our dream house not far from there. They made a counter offer today, now we are thinking about it:popcorn2

"Farming" is probably the wrong word. I guess homesteading is a better description.

As of 2010 the term may apply to anyone who follows the back-to-the-land movement by adopting a sustainable, self-sufficient lifestyle. While land is no longer freely available in most areas of the world, homesteading remains as a way of life. According to author John Seymour, 'urban homesteading' incorporates small-scale, sustainable agriculture and homemaking.

We don't really have any experience but we have grown a pretty decent garden and done a lot of canning, etc. Gotta start somewhere! Aqua-ponics is something I have been interested in and studied for a while. I am starting with Talapia and Catfish. I can't wait to watch my vegetarian wife lop the head off a Heritage Turkey:SIB

That's sorta the point. Less chance of running across someone like you. :)

I mean wtf do you think the population is at 9,000 feet where we live now. Shit, Dunclock got lost in my fucking driveway! :mj07: True story!

Shenandoah? Wow!

Back to dial-up I suppose.

That's one of those places where people go to visit and disappear, never to be found again :sadwave:

Growing your own food there is not a 'want', it's a 'need'. No stores to be found.
