Retired in Dec 2010, started reading again . Promised myself that I would not watch any daytime TV ( except sports ) & set aside 2-3 hrs. a day reading . I also got a library card, it has been over 30 yrs, gone through 15-20 books from Huck Finn to Michael Connelly. Just got into this Amos Walker ( detective ) series by Loren Estleman takes place in Detroit. Been following some of the recommendations from you guys, keep it up. Thanks !

thank you for getting a library card as that is my living for last 20 years selling to them... it still amazes me that probably 90% of the people in the US do not realize what a resource this is and especially the high tech guys that can download everything from home:0074

Tiger turned me on to the JT Ellison series and I was amazed that I never heard of it being in publishing and her whole series is based in Nashville where I live... it makes you feel more a part of the story when you can relate to everything in the books:0074

28) ** The Weight of Water, Anita Shreve

A highly acclaimed book, but I didn't like the interweaving of the two stories.

29) ***** Animal, vegetable, miracle, Barbara Kingsolver

If you read one book about food, this is it. About how their family tried to eat locally for a year. Great facts and touching stories.

30) ***** Stone Cold (Camel Club, #3), David Baldacci

The 5th Witness

And just finished "The Black Ice, which was also very good..................will review it in here probably tomorrow.

Tiger.... I'm 75 % into The Scarecrow pretty good, the other books are Echo Park & I think the Poet. I guess it doesn't make much of a difference but I should have read the Poet before The scarecrow. Will check out Black Ice when I'm through with these. Thanks for the tip.

Looks like you've got the cream of the Connelly crop there Mover.................enjoy !

3 more reviews in the Crime/Thriller category...........

1) "A Little Yellow Dog" by Walter Mosley.
My first Mosley book, and it was different, that's for sure. Set in 1964 in Los Angeles amid very high racial tension, this novel finds a high school janitor taking a teacher's dog "just for one night" while that teacher figures things out with her gangster husband. Several dead bodies later the janitor still has the dog, and is trying to solve more than one murder.

It was not a boring book, but was slow moving, and I think I'll probably read Mosely again at some point, but not right away.

3/5

2) "The Black Ice" by Michael Connelly.
Another gritty, get your hands dirty novel from Connelly. When LA Detective Harry Bosch finds an undercover narcotics officer dead from a self inflicted bullet to the head, things just don't add up. Black Ice is the latest super drug finding it's way up from Mexico into LA, and Bosch finds the trail and follows it.

I liked it a lot...............Connelly writes very realistic crime novels.

4/5

3)"The Blue Nowhere" by Jeffery Deaver.
I am a big fan of Deaver, and this older novel of his was no exception. A computer wizard is playing an on-line murder game, and things get a little too blurred for him between on-line and real life. The cops need their own computer wizard to help them find the bad guy, so they get one released from prison to help them. No, nothing can go wrong with this plan, can it ?

It wasn't my favourite Deaver, but he always keeps you guessing until the last page.

4/5

Am presently reading "Blindsighted" by Karen Slaughter, and have my To-Be-Read bookshelf full of Scott Turows, JT Ellisons, Michael Connellys, Tami Hoags, Greg Iles, Jeffery Deavers, and several others.......................haven't decided yet who is next.

Happy Reading !

WOW am I surprised you have not picked any of his up!!! I would say he is no worse than in top 10 in sales worldwide.

He has 3 series and all are great... The Camel Club series... King and Maxwell series... Shaw series

Camel Club has 5 and all very entertaining with mix of characters intertwined

You remember the movie Absolute Truth starring Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman? That was his book .... pretty sure you will really enjoy him and here is link to his site

Thanks Dunny.............I`ve read the back jacket of a few of his books, but if I remember correctly, most seemed to be political\spy kinda novels, and that genre is not my favourite..............probably why I have never bought one.

But I see his name come up in this thread quite a bit, so maybe it's time !

31) ***** Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen

Fascinating story in an intriguing setting of the circus.

32) *** Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood

First in the MaddAdam trilogy - I will read the second. This one just started really slow, but the ending was better.

33) ***** Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Lisa See

Probably not a book most men would enjoy, but a great read for women. One I will definitely give to my girls someday.

I've lost count on the number of books but really enjoyed this read.

THE OLD MAN AND THE WASTELAND

Forty years after the destruction of civilization? Man is reduced to salvaging the ruins of a broken world. One man?s most prized possession is Hemingway?s Classic ?The Old Man and the Sea.? With the words of the novel echoing across the wasteland, the survivor of a Nuclear Holocaust journeys into the unknown to break a curse.

What follows is an incredible tale of survival and endurance.
One man must survive the desert wilderness and mankind gone savage to discover the truth of Hemingway?s classic tale of man versus nature.
Part Hemingway, part Cormac McCarthy?s The Road, a suspenseful odyssey into the dark heart of the Post-Apocalyptic American southwest.

The Smart Money [Kindle Edition]
Michael Konik

In 1997, gaming journalist Konik joined the Brain Trust, a sports-gambling operation that took in millions by beating the Vegas bookies at their own game. This fascinating inside look at the gambling biz (perfectly suited, incidentally, to fans of the recent movie Two for the Money) reveals so much information that you would swear the author was breaking some sort of Omerta-like code of silence; in fact, the parallels between organized gambling and organized crime are numerous. The book created plenty of buzz in the publishing community well before its release, so expect a great deal of publicity and high reader interest. The author conceals the identities of the principal players behind fake names, but his fictionalized stand-ins are so compelling (especially the Brain Trust chieftain, Rick "Big Daddy" Matthews) that the book feels like a mixture of true-life expose and high-stakes fiction (fans of Puzo's Fools Die may see some similarities but only in a good way). A definite must-read for the gambling crowd. David Pitt
