Car Maintenance Question

I lease my car & presently have about 29,500 miles on the car. The manual states that I should do an oil & filter change & some other stuff at 30,000 miles. I previously changed the oil & filter at 15,000 miles.

My lease is up at the end of Dec. & I am trying to save money; so I am wondering if it is necessary to do the oil & filter change now or can I just ride out the remaining time without doing any maintenance.

Don't worry about it now al the oil should be changed every 3000 to 5000 miles

Just tell them you did it and then put yourself on the stiffs list :142smilie

I change my oil every 3000 miles. You might want to change that oil because they will definitely know it hasn't been changed in awhile.

hope the guy that gets that car after you gets a good deal on it... unless you happened to leave out that you've changed oil every 3K or so, and meant filter at 15k, then, well... yeah... thats rough.

Am I correct here in that the irony of this is that the creator of the stiff list thinks nothing of stiffing the next owner of the car?

Don't the cheapie places charge like 20 bucks for an oil change?

I don't know what anybody is talking about. When I did the change at 15,000 miles, the caddy mechanic put a sticker at the top of the driver's side windshield that said that another change is due either in Feb. 2010 or 30,000 miles whichever comes first. Last week, when I spoke to the service advisor who has the records of my car, he said that i should bring it in at 30,000 miles & he would give me a "loaner car".

This service call will cost me a minimum o $150 & was wondering if I could hold off on it. If it is not adviseable, I won't. But either way I assure you that this car will be in mint condition when I hand in the car as my previous leased cars were.

Seriously, the new car manuals now suggest in the 6000 to 8000 range for oil and filter. If you're an in town or short mileage driver, I'd go with 6000. And change the filter at the same time. Why put clean oil in with dirty oil still in the filter?

You must be using synthetic oil - some of those oil types have a 15,000 to 20,000 mile life span.

Some people on here aren't aware of it - not a big deal though - I don't use synthetic and I also change my oil at 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Although many mechanics say 10,000 to 15,000 mile range for most regular oil and that the 3,000 mile number was made up in the 70's to increase oil changes and their profits. (It has been proven both ways - so I really don't know what to believe other than I protect my investment.)

dealer recommends oil changes very 15,000 miles because they use synthetic oil


Oil is done once a year or every 15000 miles, depending on type of driving. That 15000 miles changes as you drive it, and ends up being about 12000 miles, but by then it's a year anyway. Cost, about $200. Not really sure as the oil price has probably gone up since I did it last. It was $11 a quart and takes 7 quarts. $200 a year for oil isn't bad though.
Every 15000 miles is about $500 or so. Called Inspection 1. Includes changing the oil.
Every 30000 miles is expensive, about $1500. This includes adjusting the valves, and Inspection 1. Called Inspection 2.

Al, I'd call around from ads in the Y Pg's or paper. They're always having oil change specials. Ask about your make and model. Caddy filters might be a little more expensive, but I agree with the other posters, $50 at most. Can usually be done in 20-30 minutes with no need for a loaner.

most car manuals nowadays say to change oil at 7,500 miles. Synthetic oil sometimes twice that.

3,000 mile change was for old carburetor and non-computer cars that broke down the oil much sooner. Also was good idea for mechanic back then to look at those cars every 4,000 or so anyway. It's no longer the 1960s and '70s!

Joker....I couldn't think of the kind of oil that they are using & it is synthetic oil.....Thanks.

Can you switch to synthetic oil 90K miles after using regular? Or might that cause problems?
