The gas gauge on my Deville works fine until it drops below 1/2 tank and then it usually shoots straight back up and shows FULL. What's going on here? And, the other day the speedometer quit working for about 5 miles before it started working again. That's only happened the one time but the gas gauge screwed me up once and I ran out of gas. Any ideas or should I hit the Cadillac forums? I can live with it because for now on I'll fill back up at 1/2 tank but it's annoying.

The problem with the arratic fuel gauges on these cars can almost always be traced back to a faulty fuel level sensor in the tank. The sensor contact fingers are very thin and tend to break off over time, which causes erratic readings from the sensor. Replacement fuel level sensors are available separately from the fuel pump. The fuel tank does not need to be removed from the vehicle for this repair. There is an access panel at the front of the trunk, behind the back seat. Pull the trunk carpet back to get to the access panel

He'll probably look at this later since he's working but since I'm sitting in the office watching Netflix, let's see how close I am with my "knowledge".

I think you have a bad sender/floater, which is probably in the fuel pump module which is located in the fuel tank. The sender is a plastic float on the bottom of the fuel pump module- I'll attach a picture. As the gas goes down the floater lowers and pulls your gas gauge down. Possibly there was some sediment in the tank and it got lodged in there and held the floater until it dislodged since it only happened once? If it becomes a re-occuring issue if you can gauge your mileage and fill it up every so often that would save you the money on replacing the module. My guess is you have to pull the tank to get to it and those kind of jobs suck. $$$.

Now when he gets home and veggies out on the couch later I'll remind him to look at this post.

No, it happens all the time.

The speedometer not working only happened once.

My bad- I just reread it again. The speedometer I'm guessing is controlled by the throttle cable. I have no knowledge there.

If you access the fuel pump module from the back seat then that is not what I'm used to since most jobs the tank has to be dropped. That's why I said "knowledge". LOL

Just an FYI for any of the guys who think I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground..............I sit in the office and order the parts that I'm told we need to do a job- I'm not in the garage doing the work. Although in the last 13 years I have been here I have learned a hell of a lot, so sometimes I do know what I'm talking about and sometimes I don't. Just putting that disclaimer out there. :0074

One time I had a old ford and it had a fuel pump that went bad.

thinking I could save money I got a neighbor mechanic guy and asked if he would help me fix it . He said sure, get the parts and I will do it Saturday.


Get the parts and he has to let down the gas tank down to get to it.

when the tank came down, it was full of gas about 20 gallons.


it flooded out his garage and stunk for months.


its always nice to get a friend to help out .

something electrical happens and I always try changing fuses before I do anything else:lol:.....usually the whole f`ing dashboard`ll go out,but who knows?....would take about 5 minutes to check.........:shrug:.
