If anyone is negligent it's the zoo. That enclosure should withstand a room of 100 kids ages 2 to 20 trying to get into the exhibit. There should be ZERO way a child, or anyone for that matter, can get into the space no matter how long they have. If this was true we would not be having this conversation.

For those bashing the parent and the kids- you either didn't have multiple small children at one time, you are older and like my mom, amazingly have had the part of your brain that kept memories of having children vaporized with age, you never had kids, or you are a fucktard like Hedge.

No matter how much you keep you eye on your kids, with multiple children there are always times where you may not focus your attention on your kids. Case in point, one of my boys punches the other in the face, I'm dealing with delivering a verbal or physical ass wooping while I deal with the blood running out the other's nose, and my 2yo daughter wanders off a few feet in the heat of the moment. If you deny that ever happening in similar circumstances to you, I say you are full of shit. That enclosure should NEVER be able to be breached, ever.

While I agree the enclosure should be escape/entry proof I do think the "number of kids" argument is flawed. You say it would be difficult for her to keep track of everything all those kids are doing so that absolves her of accountability. If she only had one kid would that change things in your eyes?

In reality it doesn't matter if she had one kid with her or a dozen, when you bring a life into this world you (should) accept responsibility for it and your other circumstances just don't matter. You are responsible for all your kids, it's not anyone else's fault you had more kids than you can keep track of and it doesn't diminish your responsibility.

Had she been driving her car with 3 of 4 kids in car seats I don't think the police would be so quick to look the other way because she had more kids than she had car seats.

The number of kids she has doesn't make her any less responsible for ALL of them. I agree it increases the degree of difficulty, but it doesn't remove responsibility.

I agree. Accidents happen and kids get into shit all the time. If you have ever been grocery shopping and had to tell your kids to put it back, are you negligent? By all accounts, the parents are attentive parents. Not every tragedy has to be blamed on someone. I can't imagine what their family's life is like right now.

This isn't the first time this has happened. It was a freak accident every single time, as was this.

Trust me, I'm exceedingly upset that a critically endangered animal was shot and killed. The animals shouldn't be there in the first place. It's cruel and a shitty life. Yet we consistently ignore the mistreatment of circus animals, zoo animals, and captive animals. I read the other day that there are more big cats in Texas than on the same size area in the Serengeti.

Here's what I don't get, some time ago a thread was posted on here about a kid getting mauled by two pit bull type dogs. I seem to recall that many of the same people in this thread called for the death of the dogs. I also recall being hammered because I called attention to the fact that the kid had climbed the fence into his neighbors yard, and that the parents are accountable for the kid being left unattended. So how is it that those parents are deserving of sympathy and these are not?

Just seems a bit hypocritical to me, but what do I know.

Saint,
You and I agree on this topic, good to see. Cheers.

Hope this helps,

What I do not understand is were they alone? I know if I saw a three year old scaling the fence I would have snagged him up without hesitation. I don't care who's child he was.... know I would not just stand and watch this take place. Wtf is wrong with people now days?

It's everyone's job to protect a three year old from tragedy. It's the parents responsibility to do the best job they can in that endeavor but accidents happen.
It seems to me that some people selectively decide when to blame and vilify the parents when it suits them. A little girl wandered into her neighbors yard and was attacked by dogs, everyone blamed the dogs. Well almost everyone. A grandmother left a 4 year old unattended for 45 minutes while visiting a friend with two dogs. The kid almost bled out before being checked on. Once again, no fervor to blame the obvious poor parenting then. So who's to blame for those two incidences? The dogs paid for the parents apathy with their lives. They were also within a fenced enclosure that was breached by an unattended child. A far more egregious case of parental inadequacy, yet no call for punishment.

Eyewitness reports I saw all stated that it happened too fast to do anything.

It sounds like you are making a case for banning those dogs from a residential neighborhood the same way gorillas are. I agree with the sentiment.

No, I'm not doing any such thing. You may want to read the posts again. Then again you can make another non-sensical trivialization of a very valid point as well. That's fine, especially considering the number of times I've done that to you, which is zero by the way. It's a good example of our societal make up actually. Fuck that golden rule shit.
