WVU, OU to tussle in Morgantown
January 4, 2018

A look at the upcoming week around the Big 12:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: No. 7 Oklahoma at No. 6 West Virginia on Saturday. With sensational freshman Trae Young leading the nation with 29.4 points and 10.6 assists per game, the Sooners (12-1, 2-0 Big 12) have already won more games than last season. The Mountaineers (13-1, 2-0) haven't lost since a drubbing at the hands of Texas A&M in the opener, and they're the very early favorites to win the league after starting with road wins at Oklahoma State and Kansas State.

LOOKING AHEAD:
After losing at Allen Fieldhouse to No. 18 Texas Tech by double digits, 10th-ranked Kansas travels to No. 16 TCU on Saturday. The Horned Frogs held off Baylor 81-78 in overtime on Tuesday. Tech, which hosts Kansas State on Saturday, leads the league with a scoring margin of 23.1 points per game. The Red Raiders (13-1, 2-0), the only team other than Oklahoma and West Virginia to win their first two Big 12 games, are home Saturday against Kansas State (11-3, 1-1) before playing both the Sooners and Mountaineers next week.

PLAYER TO WATCH:
Redshirt freshman forward Cameron Lard might be the silver lining in what's shaping up to be a rough season for Iowa State. Lard had 23 points and 16 rebounds off the bench in a loss to Texas, and coach Steve Prohm hinted after the game that Lard will likely be a focal point of Iowa State's offense in the near future. Lard is eighth in the Big 12 in rebounds (7.0), seventh in blocked shots (1.7) and second in field goal percentage (.659) - despite averaging less than 20 minutes a game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Young has scored at least 20 points in 12 straight games, the first Oklahoma player to do that. He has eight double-doubles this season, and on Wednesday night was only one rebound short of a triple-double. ... Texas Tech is allowing only 58.2 points a game, and that's not just a tempo thing. The Red Raiders are letting opponents convert only 36 percent of their shots, the lowest mark in the league. ... The Big 12 players other than Young averaging double-doubles are Texas freshman Mohamed Bamba (11.7 ppg and Big 12-leading 10.7 rpg) and Baylor senior Jo Lual-Acuil (16.1 ppg, 10.1 rpg). ... Kansas is shooting a conference-high 51.7 percent from the field and 44.2 percent from 3-point range. West Virginia is averaging 15 offensive rebounds, and its press is helping it lead the Big 12 with a turnover margin of plus-8.4.

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE:
Texas Tech fired coach Candi Whitaker on Monday. The Red Raiders started 6-7 this season and were thrashed by Oklahoma and Baylor by more than 40 points to open league play. The Lady Bears are the Big 12's highest-ranked team at No. 6, followed by Texas at No. 8. The Lady Bears have won their first three conference games by an average of more than 39 points.

Weekend visit to Purdue could show if Nebraska is for real
January 4, 2018

A look at the upcoming week around the Big Ten Conference:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: Nebraska at No. 13 Purdue, Saturday. Tim Miles could have his best team in six seasons in Lincoln, and this is an opportunity for the Cornhuskers (11-5, 2-1 Big Ten) to show they're for real. They knocked off a ranked Minnesota team at home in December and are coming off a Tuesday road win against Northwestern . Three transfers are among the new-look Huskers' top four scorers, and point guard Glynn Watson snapped out of a mini-funk in the 15-point win over Northwestern. Purdue (14-2, 3-0) lost in Lincoln last year, but 7-foot-2 center Isaac Haas was limited to 13 minutes because of a hip pointer. Nebraska struggles against size, and Purdue coach Matt Painter plays 7-3 redshirt freshman Matt Haarms alongside Haas at times.

LOOKING AHEAD: Given that No. 1 Michigan State (14-1, 2-0) has won 13 straight by double digits and four of its last six games were against opponents ranked No. 294 or lower by kenpom.com, the Spartans' next couple could be tricky. Maryland (13-3, 2-1) visits on Thursday, and the Spartans are at Ohio State (11-4, 2-0) on Saturday. Anthony Cowan Jr. has been splendid as Maryland's successor to star point guard Melo Trimble, and first-year coach Chris Holtmann has the Buckeyes playing solid ball through the first two months. Maryland and Ohio State both had wins over Michigan State last season.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Ohio State freshman forward Kaleb Wesson has provided a sorely needed inside presence for the Buckeyes and is on his way to becoming one of the premier players in the Big Ten. The 6-9, 270-pounder is averaging 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in 22 minutes per game, and he can be downright dominant when he stays out of foul trouble.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Keep in mind that the opponents were Houston Baptist, Long Beach State, Cleveland State and Savannah State , but Michigan State became the first team in 11 years to score 100 points in four straight games. The Spartans have won their last four by a total of 193 points (48.3 per contest), and Nick Ward shot 94.1 percent (32 of 34) from the field.

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE: No. 18 Iowa (14-1, 2-0) is out to its best start since the 1995-96 team opened 20-1. Junior forward Megan Gustafson is averaging 22.5 points and a Big Ten-leading 12.5 rebounds. The Hawkeyes are coming off their first win over a ranked opponent in two years (82-72 over Michigan) and face their toughest challenge so far with a Thursday night road game against No. 13 Maryland (13-2, 2-0). ''Beating a Top 25 team gives us confidence going against the next Top 25 team,'' coach Lisa Bluder said. ''We played pretty well at Maryland last year and they lost a lot of players. This is a great opportunity for us.''

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Miles Bridges had 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two blocks to help No. 1 Michigan State turn a closely contested game into another rout, pulling away to beat Maryland 91-61 on Thursday night.

The Spartans (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) went on a 15-0 run late in the first half to take control and led 44-32 at halftime. They refused to be content with the 12-point lead, building 30-plus point cushions in the second half by diving for loose balls, playing tough defense and finishing with a season-high 16 3-pointers.

Freshman Jaren Jackson had 15 points, three blocks and two steals despite playing just 4 minutes in the first half because he had two fouls.

Anthony Cowman scored 26 points for the Terrapins (13-4, 2-2), who had won seven straight.

COLORADO 90, No. 4 ARIZONA STATE 81, OT

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Namon Wright scored five of his 19 points in overtime, including two crucial free throws at the end, for Colorado.

Down 11-0 to start the game, the Buffaloes (9-6, 1-2 Pac-12) steadily whittled away and opened up a six-point lead with 1:17 remaining in regulation. But the Sun Devils (12-2, 0-2) stormed back, with Mickey Mitchell tying the game at 74 with 5 seconds left on an emphatic dunk.

In overtime, the Buffaloes hit six straight free throws down the stretch. It was the highest-ranked team Colorado has beaten since knocking off No. 3 Texas on Feb. 4, 2003. The Colorado fans stormed the court to celebrate.

McKinley Wright added 19 points and George King chipped in 18 as Colorado snapped a three-game skid, including two straight to start conference play.

Tra Holder had 24 points for Arizona State before fouling out in OT.

No. 9 WICHITA STATE 81, HOUSTON.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Landry Shamet scored 18 points in just 22 minutes to lead Wichita State.

Wichita State (12-2, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) made nine of its first 11 3-point shots and led by as many as 25 in the first half. Starting guards Shamet and Conner Frankamp (15 points) were a combined 12 of 15 from the field.

Rob Gray led Houston (12-3, 2-1 American) with 13 points, six below his season average. He was 6 of 14 from the field.

No. 14 ARIZONA, UTAH 82

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Deandre Ayton scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Arizona.

The Wildcats (12-3, 2-0 Pac-12) have won nine straight.

Rawle Alkins finished with 22 points for Arizona and Parker Jackson-Cartwright added 19.

Sedrick Barefield led Utah (10-4, 2-1) with 23 points and David Collette added 19.

Utah rallied from a 17-point deficit to tie the game late, but couldn't pull off the upset.

No. 19 CINCINNATI 55, TEMPLE 53

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jacob Evans III hit the winner with .4 seconds to play for Cincinnati and the Bearcats got a needed assist from a soaring water bottle.

The Bearcats (13-2, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) rallied down the stretch to win their sixth straight game.

Temple led by two points when a turnover and on offensive foul caused coach Fran Dunphy to angrily smack a water bottle on the scorer's table and send the plastic container to the court. Dunphy was whistled for the technical. Gary Clark made one of two free throws to cut the Bearcats' deficit to one.

Kyle Washington put the Bearcats ahead 52-50 on a 3-pointer from the wing and Evans hit the jumper in the final second to win it.

Washington led the Bearcats with 18 points and Evans had 14.

Obi Enechionyia led the Owls (7-7, 0-3) with 14 points. The Owls have lost four straight games.

No. 19 GONZAGA 89, PEPPERDINE 59

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Killian Tillie had 22 points and eight rebounds to lead Gonzaga.

Johnathan Williams scored 13 points and Rui Hachimura had 12 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs (13-3, 3-0 West Coast Conference), who have not lost to Pepperdine since 2002.

Gonzaga outscored Pepperdine 48-14 in the paint and had a 36-13 edge off the bench, with Corey Kispert adding nine points and eight rebounds. Zach Norvell Jr. scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

Eric Cooper Jr. had a season-high 19 points for the Waves (3-12, 0-3).

Warriors run past Rockets, 124-114
January 4, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Stephen Curry is well aware that Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has crafted his team specifically to try and beat the Golden State Warriors.

''As much as he talks about it, yeah it's hard not to,'' Curry said. ''It's pretty ... clear.''

But on Thursday night with the Rockets missing the most important piece on their team in James Harden, Chris Paul and his supporting cast were not enough to overcome the defending champions.

Curry scored 29 points, Klay Thompson had 28 and the Warriors pulled away late in the fourth quarter for a 124-114 victory.

Draymond Green added a triple-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to become the franchise career leader in triple-doubles with 21. It was his second this season to move him past Tom Gola.

The Warriors extended their road winning streak to nine games and have won an NBA-best 16 road games this season.

The teams stayed close through most of the game, but the Warriors had a seven-point lead with about 3 1/2 minutes left. They scored the next five points, highlighted by a 3 from Curry, to make it 120-109 and send many of the home fans streaming for the exits.

The Rockets got 30 points from Eric Gordon, and Gerald Green came off the bench to score 29 and tie a career high with eight 3-pointers as they played their second game without Harden, who is out for at least two weeks with a hamstring strain.

''We've got to get better as a team,'' Houston coach Mike D'Antoni said. ''We're just not quite there defensively, communication, all the stuff we can control we're not doing.''

The Warriors were short-handed, too, playing without Kevin Durant, who missed the game with strained right calf. But Andre Iguodala returned after sitting out Wednesday night with back and hip strains and had 10 points and eight assists.

''Obviously they were missing their best player without James so we felt like there was an opportunity for us,'' Thompson said.

Curry added nine rebounds and five assists and a steal in his third game back after missing 11 with a sprained right ankle.

Golden State led by 10 after a dunk by David West with about 7 1/2 minutes remaining. The Rockets scored the next five points, with a 3-pointer from Gerald Green, to get to 108-103, but the Warriors scored the next five points to go up by 10 again.

The Warriors were up by 3 after three and opened the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run to make it 101-91 with about 10 minutes left.

Chris Paul re-entered the game after that and he helped get things going when he found Gordon for a 3-pointer which started a 7-2 run that cut the lead to 103-98. Paul finished with 28 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Gerald Green's second 3-pointer in less than a minute put Houston up by two midway through the third quarter. The Warriors scored the next seven points, with a 3-pointer from Thompson, to take a 79-74 lead about a minute later.

They didn't stay on top for long though as the Rockets scored the next 11 points to go up 85-79. Gerald Green delighted the crowd when he knocked down a 3 from the corner before being fouled Iguodala and crashing to the ground. He also made the free throw.

The Warriors ended a 2 1/2 minute scoring drought on a dunk by Kevon Looney before Curry added a layup.

But Gerald Green pushed the lead to 88-83 when he banked in another 3-pointer.

The Warriors closed out the quarter with a 10-2 spurt, capped by 3s from Nick Young and Curry, to take a 93-90 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Rockets led 63-62 at halftime.

TIP-INS

Warriors: Omri Casspi missed his second straight game with a strained back. ... Curry played in his 600th career game with the Warriors, making him the 10th player in franchise history to reach that mark.

Rockets: Nene normally doesn't play the second game of back-to-back games but was also dealing with a bruised right knee that coach Mike D'Antoni could cause him to miss more time. ... Paul received a technical foul in the fourth quarter.

NICE CATCH

R&B singer Usher watched the game from a courtside seat next to Golden State's bench and got involved in the action when he caught Trevor Ariza and Curry as they sailed out of bounds and into his seat chasing a loose ball in the third quarter. Usher put his hands up to protect himself as they barreled his way and laughed as he collected himself after the two players got up.

''I think he made it out of that collision all right,'' Curry said. ''I just wanted to make sure his voice was fine. I didn't want to mess with that, that's his moneymaker.''

GREEN'S SHOT

Gerald Green became the first player in franchise history to make seven or more 3-pointers in consecutive games after he made seven on Wednesday night against Orlando. Golden State coach Steve Kerr raved about the work of Green, who was signed on Dec. 28.

''Gerald Green just kept them in the game almost singlehandedly,'' Kerr said. ''He's one of those guys it seems like you should just leave him open because it's all of the challenged ones that he makes. He makes all these crazy, difficult shots when you're flying at him and then there's some that are open that he misses.''

UP NEXT

Warriors: At Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday.

Rockets: At Detroit on Saturday.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Super Bowl exacta odds: winner listed first

6-1? Patriots over Vikimgs

15-2? Vikings over Patriots

8-1? Vikings over Steelers

11-1? Patriots over Eagles, Patriots over Rams, Patriots over Saints

12-1? Steelers over Vikings

14-1? Saints over Patriots

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Carson Palmer retired this week; he earned $174,148,722 in his NFL career, which means he can do whatever he wants the rest of his life, but lot of athletes have trouble finding something to do that is as stimulating/interesting as playing ball.

Former Phillies star Mike Schmidt talked about that after he retired, how he has struggled to find something that motivates him like baseball did. Schmidt does Phillies games on TV on the weekends; he tried managing in the minor leagues, but that didn?t last long.

12) This would be an interesting TV series; looking up retired athletes and seeing what they?re doing now. Anfernee Hardaway is an interesting person to look at? he coaches high school basketball in Memphis now, and has a really good team. Hardaway earned over $120M in his playing career.

11) TV ratings for the college football bowl games were up 7% from last year; yes, there are too many bowls, but yes, people are watching them.

10) Snowy day here today at Armadillo World HQ; it is a windy, snowy mess here, but was also a solid day of movies on TV. Bull Durham, Blue Chips, The Bodyguard, plus I found a Without a Trace marathon. Better than braving the elements outside on a cruddy winter day.

9) Kevin Durant donated $3M to the University of Texas to support the basketball program and the Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation. Durant only played one season at Texas, before heading on to the NBA.

8) RIP Rob Picciolo 64, who passed away this week. Picciolo played nine years in the majors, six of them for the A?s? he was a solid fielder who today would be a super-utility guy. He had been coaching in the major leagues, with the Angels and Padres.

7) Central Florida went 13-0 this year, joining this list of smaller-budget football programs that had an unbeaten season. Here is how the other four teams did the following season:

Utah, 2005? 7-5, won Emerald Bowl 38-10
Boise State, 2007? 10-3, lost Hawai?i Bowl 41-38
Utah, 2009? 10-3, won Poinsettia Bowl 24-13
TCU, 2011? 11-2, won Poinsettia Bowl 31-24

6) Lot of college basketball teams have almost no depth; Syracuse lost 73-67 at Wake Forest on Wednesday; they played two guys the whole 40:00, two others 37:00. Their subs played a total of only fifteen minutes.

5) Sign of the Times: In Tulsa?s 90-88 double OT win over UConn Wednesday, Golden Hurricane made 17-41 3-pointers, 25-36 on foul line, but only 7-23 inside the arc. Shooting has become a huge skill, since teams that don?t have much depth play more zone.

4) Guy named Briceton Branch won around $1.3M when he won this year?s Westgate SuperContest, where you pony up $1,500, then pick five NFL games a week against the spread. More than 2,700 handicappers were involved this season, the biggest one they?ve had.

3) Football coaches are gypsies; Giants? offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan is the new QB coach in Denver. Rumors on the Interweb Thursday had the Broncos more interested in acquiring Kirk Cousins than Eli Manning- they?re desperate to upgrade their QB play from the last two years.

2) There are rumblings that Donald Trump is going to the Alabama-Georgia game Monday nite, raising the possibility that player(s) on either team might take a knee during national anthem; seeing how there will be roughly 200 players on the sidelines, what are the odds that we get thru the night without some politically-inspired drama?

1) Warm thought of the day: Dodgers? spring training tickets go on sale Friday morning; tickets are $3 cheaper if you buy them in advance, as opposed to buying them the day of the game.

Saturday?s 6-pack

Longshot Super Bowl exacta odds: winner listed first

1,250-1? Titans over Panthers

1,000-1? Falcons over Titans, Falcons over Bills

800-1? Bills over Falcons

600-1? Eagles over Titans, Eagles over Bills

500-1? Rams over Titans, Rams over Bills

250-1? Jaguars over Panthers

*************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) Did some research today: as far as NFL teams meeting for third time in season in playoffs; in Super Bowl era, the home team is 34-25 in the third meeting. Teams that swept first 2 meetings are 11-5 in third meeting.

Carolina lost to the Saints twice this year, so they fit this scenario Sunday.

12) Jon Gruden is going to get a 10-year, $100M contract to coach the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, which seems excessive, but now ESPN needs to come up with someone to replace Gruden interviewing college QB prospects before the NFL Draft, because that was some of their best programming.

College basketball notes from last few days:
11) Western Kentucky?s 4-star recruit Josh Anderson became eligible this week, and will play at Marshall Saturday. Anderson is an athletic defender at guard who gives the Hilltoppers needed depth- they used seven players in their last three games.

10) North Texas won two of its first three games in C-USA; the three games were decided by total of four points.

9) Stanford 107, UCLA 99 2OT? Bruins went 19-35 on foul line in this double OT game, a game Bruins led by 13 with 9:31 to play. Six players fouled out of this game, three on each side.

8) Over last seven years, Big West has put seven different teams into the NCAA tournament; in these one-bid leagues, all that really matters in the conference tournament in March, not sure if thats a good thing, but it is what it is.

7) Best college basketball studio show is on FS1, with Steve Lavin/Jim Jackson analyzing games and Rob Stone. Good banter where you can learn stuff, and laugh at same time.

6) Mike Dunleavy Sr has coached 1,329 NBA games; quite a coup for Tulane to hire him as their basketball coach. Green Wave was 33-63 the last three years, 6-25 in Dunleavy?s first season last year, but they?re 11-4 this year, and 2-1 in the AAC with wins over Temple/SMU.

Big improvement for Tulane, who last finished over .500 in conference 11 years ago.

5) Cal Poly 80, Cal-Santa Barbara 79 OT? Gauchos led this game 23-2 on road Thursday nite, but let it slip away down the stretch. Not too many teams that are down 21 come back to win.

4) Colorado 90, Arizona State 81 OT? Sun Devils were unbeaten, ranked #4 in country, but now they?re 0-2 in Pac-12, after losing to Arizona/Colorado. ASU was 9-33 on arc in this game, was +7 in turnovers. Conference play is tough, much more competitive.

3) UNLV 82, San Jose State 76 OT? UNLV coaches dodged a bullet here; down a point with 0:16 left, Rebels called timeout, but star player McCoy didn?t check in quick enough during the timeout, so he had to stay on the bench, and since UNLV was out of timeouts, they played the most important possession of the game without their best player. No bueno.

UNLV tied the game, McCoy came back in and played the OT, and the Rebels survived to win a game that would?ve been a hideous loss. San Jose State is rebuilding- there was almost no one there? there had been a power outage on campus during the day. UNLV did its walk-thru in a mostly dark gym? seriously. TV announcer Drew Goodman filmed part of it with his phone.

2) Tennessee State 67, Jacksonville State 60? Gamecocks were 0-3 on foul line for the game; you don?t see that a lot- they were 10-24 on the arc. Tennessee State was 15-15 on the line; they shot 61% inside the arc. JSU may have been looking ahead to its game with Belmont Saturday.

1) Texas A&M scored 61.5 ppg in losing its first two SEC games, after an 11-1 start to their season, but think they get leading scorer Hogg back from suspension for their home game with LSU today. Hogg was 5th (and hopefully last) Aggie to be suspended this season- they just got couple guys back from knee injuries- they?re very good if they can just get back to full strength.

Duke at N.C. State
January 5, 2018

**Duke at North Carolina State**

-- These old-school ACC adversaries will square off Saturday night in Raleigh at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

-- Duke (13-1 straight up, 8-4 against the spread) is No. 1 in the RPI Rankings, No. 5 at KenPom.com and No. 2 in the Associated Press?s poll. The Blue Devils are 2-0 against the RPI Top 50 and 9-1 versus the Top 100. They took their lone defeat on Dec. 9 at Boston College by an 89-84 count.

-- Duke owns neutral-court wins over Michigan State (88-81), Portland State (99-81), Texas (85-78) and Florida (87-84). Mike Krzyzewski?s club has quality home wins over FSU (100-93), South Dakota (96-80), Furman (92-63), Elon (97-68) and Utah Valley (97-68). Don?t think those mid-and-low-major teams are quality wins? I hear that, but South Dakota (#82 RPI), Elon (#68), Furman (#96) and Utah Valley (#79) are all currently Top-100 RPI squads.

-- Duke has won back-to-back home games over Evansville (104-40) and FSU since the loss at BC. The Seminoles led 49-45 at intermission at Cameron Indoor Stadium this past Saturday. Coach K?s team outscored FSU 55-44 in the second half to win by seven, but it failed to cover the spread as an 11.5-point home favorite. All five Duke starters scored in double figures led by freshman center Marvin Bagley III, who exploded for 32 points and 21 rebounds on 13-of-17 shooting from the field. Grayson Allen added 22 points and six assists compared to just two turnovers, while Wendell Carter Jr. also had a double-double with 14 points, 16 boards, four assists and four blocked shots. Trevon Dural contributed 16 points and four assists with only one turnover.

-- Duke is 1-1 both SU and ATS in a pair of true road assignments. In addition to the loss at BC, the Blue Devils went to Assembly Hall in Bloomington and captured a 91-81 as 8.5-point road ?chalk.? They didn?t get ahead of the number for the first time until going up 86-77 with 2:24 remaining. Bagley?s 23 points and 10 rebounds were the difference at IU.

-- Bagley is a candidate for National Player of the Year honors. He leads the ACC in scoring (21.9 points per game) and rebounding (11.6 RPG). Dural (12.0 PPG) paces the ACC in assists (6.6 APG) and is fourth in the league in steals (1.9 SPG), but his shooting percentages from both downtown (15.8%) and free-throw line (62.2%) are dismal. Allen, the senior who played a key role in Duke?s last national title in 2015 when he was a freshman, has matured this season and hasn?t been involved in any drama. He?s averaging 17.4 PPG, is draining 43.6 percent of his launches from long distance and has a stellar 62/22 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Carter is averaging 13.7 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots per game.

-- Duke is No. 2 in the nation in scoring offense with a 94.6 points-per-game average. The Blue Devils are ninth in the country in field-goal percentage (51.3%).

-- North Carolina State (10-5 SU, 3-5 ATS) is in its first season under head coach Kevin Keatts who went 72-28 overall and 41-13 in Colonial play during his three-year tenure at UNC-Wilmington, which saw the school go to a pair of NCAA Tournaments for the first time in a decade. Keatts, a former assistant under Rick Pitino at Louisville, won Coach of the Year honors in the CAA twice. The 45-year-old replaced Mark Gottfried, who took the Wolfpack to four straight NCAA Tournaments to start his six-year tenure before falling on hard times and going 31-34 in his final two seasons.

-- N.C. State will play its ACC home opener in this spot after getting smashed in a pair of road assignments to start league play. This past Saturday at Clemson, the Tigers thumped N.C. State by a 78-62 count as 10-point home ?chalk.? Then on Wednesday night in South Bend, where Notre Dame was playing its first game without star senior center Bonzie Colson, the Fighting Irish blasted the Wolfpack 88-58 as a 6.5-point home favorite at the Joyce Center. Allerik Freeman, a grad transfer from Baylor, had a team-best 13 points, four assists and four rebounds in the losing effort, but he committed five turnovers made only 5-of-16 attempts from the floor. Lennard Freeman was also in double figures with 10 points.

-- N.C. State has won nine of its 10 home games, but it?s clearly faced mostly cupcakes since only three of those contests were lined. The Wolfpack went 2-1 ATS in those matchups, beating Penn State 85-78 on Nov. 29 in the only spot as a home underdog (+2.5).

-- N.C. State?s only home loss came to NC-Greensboro by an 81-76 count as an 8.5-point home favorite. Allerik Freeman had 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in defeat, while Lennard Freeman and Braxton Beverly scored 16 points apiece.Lennard Freeman pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, while Beverly had eight assists compared to just one turnover.

-- N.C. State is No. 91 at KenPom and No. 129 in the RPI. The Wolfpack is 1-2 versus the RPI Top 50 and 1-4 against the Top 100. Keatts?s club captured its best win over Arizona by a 90-84 score on Nov. 22 at the Battle 4 Atlantis. They lost their two other games in the Bahamas to No. Iowa (60-54) and Tennessee (67-58).

-- Allerik Freeman is averaging 15.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Torin Dorn, a junior guard, is averaging 13.2 points and 7.6 RPG, while Lennard Freeman is averaging 11.6 PPG.

-- Markell Johnson, a sophomore guard out of Cleveland?s East Tech High School, is averaging 8.7 points, 6.6 assists and 2.4 steals per game. However, he?s missed five straight games and remains out due to an indefinite suspension for a violation of the school?s Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.

-- The ?over? is 5-3 overall for N.C. St., 3-0 in its home games.

-- Duke has won four of the past five against N.C. St., but the Wolfpack have covered the number in three consecutive meetings and won outright on last season?s lone encounter. Gottfried?s team went into Durham as a 16.5-point underdog and won 84-82 on Jan. 23 of 2017. Dennis Smith Jr., who was a one-and-done player who is enjoying an excellent rookie campaign in The Association, was the catalyst against the Blue Devils with 22 points, six assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Duke?s Allen was held to 13 points and made just 1-of-9 shots from long distance.

-- The ?over? has hit at a remarkable 11-1 overall clip for the Blue Devils, 2-0 in their road games. The ?over? cashed in their first 10 lined games until the 144 combined points slithered ?under? the 146.5 points.

-- The ?over? has been a winner in nine straight games of this rivalry that were played in Raleigh. The ?over? is 20-5-1 in the past 26 head-to-head encounters (regardless of the venue).

-- The ?over? is 14-3 in Duke?s past 17 road games. Also, the ?over? is on a 42-20 run in N.C. St.?s last 62 home contests.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- La Salle star B.J. Johnson is ?questionable? for Saturday?s home game vs. VCU with an ankle injury. Johnson, the local grown Philly product who started his career at Syracuse, is averaging 21.8 points and 9.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, has missed three consecutive contests. The Explorers (7-8 SU, 6-8 ATS) are 1-2 SU and 1-1 ATS without him.

-- After serving a three-game suspension for a violation of team rules, Texas A&M star D.J. Hogg will return for Saturday?s home game vs. LSU. Hogg is averaging 14.6 points and 6.8 RPG while shooting at a 50.0 percent clip from 3-point range. The Aggies were without three of their top four leading scorers in Tuesday?s 83-66 home loss to Florida. Duane Wilson sat out the loss to UF with a knee injury and is ?questionable? vs. the Tigers. The grad transfer from Marquette is averaging 12.1 PPG and has dished out a team-best 58 assists compared to 33 turnovers. Meanwhile, Admon Gilder (12.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG & 3.7 APG) has been out since mid-December with a knee injury and may not return for another week or so.

-- The ?under? is 9-1 overall for Pitt. The Panthers play Saturday at Virginia Tech, which has seen back-to-back ?unders? after the ?over? went 7-2 in its first nine lined outings. Kevin Stallings?s team remains without Ryan Luther, who is out indefinitely with a foot injury sustained in mid-December. Luther was averaging 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game through his team?s first 10 contests.

-- Wake Forest guard Keyshawn Woods is ?doubtful? at Wake Forest with a knee injury. Woods is averaging 14.8 PPG for the Demon Deacons, who are 7-2 SU in their past nine games and 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight lined contests.

-- Harvard?s Bryce Aiken has missed three consecutive games with a knee injury and is ?questionable? vs. Dartmouth on Saturday. Aiken averages 17.6 points and 3.3 APG.

-- Already without its best player Bonzie Colson until at least late February, now Mike Brey?s Notre Dame will be without its second-best player against Syracuse. Senior point guard Matt Farrell is averaging 15.9 points, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Omer Yurtseven had 16 points while Torin Dorn hit two huge 3-pointers in the final 2 minutes to help North Carolina State upset No. 2 Duke 96-85 on Saturday night.

It was the second win against a No. 2-ranked team this season for N.C. State (11-5, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), which upset Arizona in November.

The Wolfpack shot 55 percent after halftime, though the two biggest shots came from Dorn.

He first hit a 3 from the corner over an oncoming Marvin Bagley III with 2:02 left and N.C. State protecting a four-point lead. Then Dorn hit one to beat the shot clock on an inbounds pass while being fouled by Javin DeLaurier, a four-point play that pushed the Wolfpack to a 91-80 lead with 1:06 left.

Bagley finished with 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils (13-2, 1-2).

No. 3 VILLANOVA 100, MARQUETTE 90

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jalen Brunson had 27 points and eight assists and Villanova bounced back from its first loss of the season.

Eric Paschall added 19 points and Mikal Bridges had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats (14-1, 2-1 Big East), who never trailed and shot 56 percent from the field to give coach Jay Wright his 400th win at Villanova.

With a week to stew over a 101-93 loss at Butler, the Wildcats were efficient, hitting 27 of 32 free throws and getting assists on 20 of 32 baskets.

Markus Howard had 37 points and eight assists for Marquette (11-5, 2-2), three nights after scoring a Big East record-tying 52 points in an overtime win at Providence.

PROVIDENCE 81, No. 5 XAVIER 72

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Kyron Cartwright had 19 points, nine assists and four steals to help Providence snapping Xavier's 10-game winning streak and ending the best start in school history.

Rodney Bullock scored 17 points, with six rebounds and two blocked shots, as Providence (11-6, 2-2 Big East) beat a ranked team for the first time this season. It was the Friars' 11th win over a top-5 team, and their first since beating No. 4 Villanova two years ago.

Kerem Kanter had 24 points and 12 rebounds - eight on the offensive boards - in 20 minutes for Xavier (15-2, 3-1).

No. 6 WEST VIRGINIA 89, No. 7 OKLAHOMA 76

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Teddy Allen scored 20 points off the bench and Sagaba Konate had 14 of his 16 points in the second half for West Virginia.

Lamont West and Jevon Carter added 17 points apiece for the Mountaineers (14-1, 3-0 Big 12). Konate also had 13 rebounds.

Oklahoma freshman Trae Young, the nation's scoring and assists leader, finished with 29 points on 8-of-22 shooting. Carter and his teammates spent much of the game double-teaming Young, whose streak of double-doubles ended at five games.

West Virginia held the nation's top-scoring team to its lowest total of the season while the Mountaineers extended their winning streak to 14 games, their longest since winning 22 straight during the 1988-89 season. Oklahoma (12-2, 2-1) saw its 10-game winning streak snapped.

The Cavaliers won their sixth in a row and sent the Tar Heels to consecutive losses for the first time since February 2016. North Carolina lost 81-80 at Florida State on Wednesday night.

Joel Berry II led North Carolina (12-4, 1-2) with 17 points and Kenny Williams had 11.

No. 10 KANSAS 88, No. 16 TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Devonte Graham scored 28 points with eight straight free throws in the final 2:02 as Kansas held on.

Vladimir Brodziansky had eight straight points for TCU to tie the game at 77-all before Marcus Garrett's two tiebreaking free throws put the Jayhawks ahead to stay with 3 minutes left. Graham then made all of his free throws down the stretch for the Jayhawks (12-3, 2-1 Big 12).

Svi Mykhailiuk added 20 points for Kansas, which was coming off a home loss to Texas Tech and avoided its first 1-2 conference mark since 1990-91.

Brodziansky led TCU (13-2, 1-2) with 20 points.

LSU 69, No. 11 TEXAS A&M 68

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Tremont Waters scored 21 points, including an off-balance 3-pointer with 1 second remaining, to lift LSU.

The game was tied before the Aggies used an 8-3 run, capped by four points from Tyler Davis, to take a 68-63 lead. But Waters, who finished with five 3s, made a 3-pointer for LSU to get the Tigers (10-4, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) within three with 12 seconds left.

Davis missed two free throws on the other end before Waters launched his winner under heavy defensive pressure to give the Tigers the win.

Leading scorer D.J. Hogg returned for the Aggies (11-4, 0-3) after a suspension, but it wasn't enough to stop them from dropping their third straight after lopsided losses to Alabama and Florida.

Davis led the Aggies with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Vincent Edwards scored 21 points and Isaac Haas added 14 to lead Purdue to its 11th consecutive win.

It's the second straight game in which the Buffaloes (10-6, 2-2 Pac-12) have knocked off a ranked team. They defeated No. 4 Arizona State 90-81 in overtime Thursday.

Colorado went up by 20 in the first half only to see the Wildcats (12-4, 2-1) pull within three.

Dallas Walton finished with a career-high 15 points on 7-for-7 shooting as the Buffaloes overcame 13 turnovers in the second half.

Deandre Ayton scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half for Arizona.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Admiral Schofield had 20 points and nine rebounds and Tennessee rallied in the second half to end a two-game skid.

This marks the third consecutive season that Tennessee (10-4, 1-2 SEC) has beaten Kentucky (12-3, 2-1) in Knoxville. Kentucky entered the night leading the overall series 153-69, but no team has beaten the Wildcats as often as Tennessee.

Quade Green scored 14 points to lead Kentucky.

No. 18 TEXAS TECH 74, KANSAS STATE 58

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Keenan Evans scored 27 points and Texas Tech backed up its big win at Kansas earlier in the week.

The Red Raiders (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) led throughout against K-State, like they have in all of their conference games. That includes that 85-73 win at Allen Fieldhouse four days earlier, the only time they have ever won there.

By shooting 70 percent in the first half, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 20-4 lead and settled for a 40-22 advantage at the break.

Dean Wade had eight points for K-State (11-4, 1-2) in a 16-8 spurt to get within 48-40 with just under 12 minutes left.

Auburn (14-1, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) hit 12 of its first 18 shots as it opened the game on a 29-18 run.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Marcquise Reed scored 24 points and Elijah Thomas had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks to lead Clemson.

The Tigers (14-1, 3-0 ACC) found their 3-point shot when it mattered, making five of their final seven shots behind the arc after starting the game 2 of 17 on 3s.
