Top 25 Betting Recap
February 18, 2018

Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

Texas Tech (22-5 SU, 13-10 ATS) looked like they had the ship righted after a two-game losing streak Jan. 17-20, ripping off seven wins in a row. They also had four covers in a row before their 59-57 loss at Baylor (17-10 SU, 13-7 ATS), a team that has been a giant killer lately. The Bears avenged a 77-53 loss at Lubbock back on Dec. 29 when the Red Raiders coasted to the victory and cover as 7 1/2-point favorites. The Bears played great defense in their win, and the 'under' is 5-2 in their past seven victories. When the 'over' hits, the Bears are just 2-4 SU and 3-3 ATS.

Gonzaga (25-4 SU, 11-14-1 ATS) was able to power through a win against Pepperdine (4-24 SU, 9-18 ATS), a team which has struggled to cover the spread this season. The Waves have won just four times straight-up, and they were 25-point underdogs in this one. However, they kept the Zags within arm's length for a good chunk of the game before Gonzaga pulled away in the end. It was a stark contrast to the first meeting in Malibu back on Jan. 4 when the Bulldogs powered past the Waves 89-59 to cover a 24-point number. The Bulldogs are just 2-9 ATS over their past 11 outings. The 'under' has now cashed in six in a row for Gonzaga, as there were just 148 total points on Saturday, three fewer than the 151 total.

Oklahoma (16-10 SU, 8-17 ATS) continues its freefall, and they'll tumble out of the Top 25 this week. The Sooners are in an inexplicable five-game losing streak, with their last victory coming Jan. 30 against Baylor. Since flipping the calendar to February OU is 0-5 SU/ATS, and they haven't covered in seven tries dating back to Jan. 23, their only cover in the past 11 outings. It won't get any easier for the Sooners, as Kansas (21-6 SU, 13-12-1 ATS) looms on the upcoming schedule. The Jayhawks will be looking for revenge, too, as losing 85-80 in Norman. One thing bettors have been seeing with OU is the 'under', cashing seven times in the past 10 outings.

Saturday was a day of upsets in the Southeastern Conference, as Auburn (23-4 SU, 18-7 ATS) suffered an ugly loss at South Carolina (14-13 SU, 11-14-1 ATS) by a 84-75 score. It was the first setback for the Tigers since a 76-71 loss on the court of their rivals Alabama (17-10 SU, 14-11-1 ATS) on Jan. 17. Those two will meet on Wednesday on the plains. The Crimson Tide have shown some upside this season, as they have a nice collection of freshmen and younger players. However, Alabama hasn't been able to put it together consistently on the road. Bama lost at Kentucky (18-9 SU, 11-16 ATS) by an 81-71 count. The Tide has posted a 2-6 SU/4-4 ATS over their past eight true road outings.

Texas A&M (17-10 SU, 11-13 ATS) returned to the Top 25 this past week, and just as quickly as they're back they'll be gone. The Aggies aggravated their fans with an 0-2 SU/ATS week, including a demoralizing 94-75 rout at the hands of a very average Arkansas (19-8 SU, 14-13 ATS) team on Saturday. Actually, the Razorbacks have been a little bit above average lately, and they could be the next SEC team to make their way into the Top 25. The Hogs are on a four-game winning streak after their rout of A&M, and they have also covered each of the outings. Three of the games were at home, however. They have been dismal on the road, posting a 2-6 SU/ATS mark across eight true road contests this season. They're home to Kentucky on Tuesday before heading to Alabama on Saturday.

Also in the SEC, Tennessee (19-7 SU, 14-10 ATS) was denied its 20th victory on Saturday evening, as Georgia (15-11 SU, 12-11 ATS) came alive with a two-win week. The Volunteers have dropped two straight away from Knoxville, and they're now a dismal 0-3 ATS over their past three outings overall after a four-game cover streak from Jan 27-Feb. 6. It won't get any easier, as they have a home date with Florida (17-10 SU, 12-13-1 ATS), a team which has been in and out of the Top 25 this season. The good news is that they catch the Gators at home. Tennessee is 6-0 SU/4-2 ATS across their past six home outings dating back to a loss Jan. 2 against Auburn.

Monday's Tip Sheet
February 18, 2018

Monday?s Presidents Day doubleheader of college basketball action on ESPN starts at 7 p.m. with a pair of teams in the ACC looking for a quality victory to add to the win column. Later in the Big 12, one of the top teams in that conference will try and avenge an earlier loss.

Miami Hurricanes at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (ESPN, 7 p.m. ET)

Betting Odds: Notre Dame -4

Betting Matchup

Miami?s three-game straight-up losing streak has dropped it to an even 7-7 in the ACC and 18-8 overall. The Hurricanes closed as 4 ?-point home favorites in Saturday?s 62-55 loss to Syracuse to fall to a very costly 2-9 against the spread over their last 11 games. The total stayed UNDER 129 points in that loss and it has stayed UNDER in each of the last three games. Miami is 3-4 ATS in seven conference road games this season.

Scoring has suddenly become an issue for a Miami team that has averaged 73.8 points a game. It was held to 50 points against Virginia?s shutdown defense last Tuesday before putting up just 55 points against the Orange. The Hurricanes have failed to cross the 70-point mark in four of their last six contests. Freshman guard Chris Lykes scored a team-high 14 points on Saturday and sophomore forward Dewan Huell ended the game with seven points. Miami shot just 33.9 percent from the field; going 7-for-31 from three-point range.

With Saturday?s 84-67 road victory against Boston College as 1 ?-point underdogs, the Fighting Irish have won three of their last four games both SU and ATS. The lone loss was to North Carolina on the road after beating both BC and Florida State at home as favorites in this four-game span. The total went OVER 144 points in Saturday?s win and it has gone OVER in five of their last seven outings. Notre Dame is 6-8 both SU and ATS in conference play.

Senior guard Matt Farrell has filled some pretty big shoes replacing an injured Bonzie Colson as the team?s top scorer with an average of 17.1 points. He really stepped up his game on Saturday by posting a career-high 37 points while connecting on 10 of his 12 shots from three-point range. He has now surpassed his scoring average in three of his last four starts. Notre Dame is averaging 76.4 PPG on the year and it has now scored at least 84 points in three of its last four games.

Betting Trends

-- The Hurricanes are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 games following a SU loss and the total has gone OVER in four of their last five road games.

-- The Fighting Irish have failed to cover in their last four Monday games and the total has gone OVER in their last four games played at home.

-- Notre Dame has the slight 3-2 SU edge in the last five meetings, but Miami has covered ATS in four of the last six games between the two. The total has stayed UNDER in three of the last four meetings.

No. 23 Oklahoma Sooners at No. 13 Kansas Jayhawks (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET)

Betting Odds: Kansas -8.5

Betting Matchup

Oklahoma?s extended losing streak reach five games with Saturday?s 77-66 loss to Texas as a 6 ?-point home favorite. It has now failed to cover in its last seven games and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last 10 games it has played. The Sooners are in freefall in the Big 12 at 6-8 SU with a 4-8 record ATS. They have failed to cover in seven of nine games this season on the road and the total has gone OVER in their last two road games.

Going back over Oklahoma?s last five losses, it has failed to score more than 80 points in any of those games. The Sooners are still one of the highest scoring teams in the nation with an average of 87.5 PPG, but they have hardly looked the part. Freshman guard Trae Young still leads the country in scoring with an average of 29.0 points, but he failed to reach that mark in four of his last five starts. He ended Saturday?s game against Texas with 26 points while going just 7-for-21 from the field.

Kansas is 5-2 SU since its 85-80 loss to Oklahoma on Jan. 23 as a two-point road underdog. It is coming off Saturday?s 77-69 victory against West Virginia as a three-point favorite at home. This was just the fourth time in the Jayhawks? last 12 games they covered ATS and the total has now stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in nine of their last 11 games, including the 171 ?-point line against the Sooners. Kansas is tied with Texas Tech for the lead in the Big 12 standings at 10-4 SU.

Sophomore center Udoka Azubuike scored 21 points and senior guard Devonte? Graham added 15 more in Saturday?s win against the Mountaineers. Azubuike is averaging 14.1 PPG while leading Kansas in rebounds (7.0) and Graham has been the team?s leading scorer this season with an average of 17.4 points. The Jayhawks are five deep in players averaging at least 12 PPG as part of 81.6-point scoring average this season. However, Saturday was the sixth time in their last seven games they failed to score at least 80 points.

Betting Trends

-- The Sooners have failed to cover in five of their last seven Monday games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of those seven contests.

-- The Jayhawks are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games played on a Monday and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in eight of their last nine Monday games.

-- Head-to-head in this Big 12 tilt, the underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in the last four games between the two.

NCAAB Game of the Day: Oklahoma at Kansas betting preview and odds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trae Young snapped a streak of 20 consecutive missed 3-pointers on Saturday and is averaging 23.6 points per game during the Sooners' current five-game losing skid.

No. 23 Oklahoma Sooners at No. 13 Kansas Jayhawks (-8.5, 166.5)

Before focusing on a Big 12 first-place showdown with Texas Tech next weekend, 13th-ranked Kansas must take care of business Monday when slumping No. 23 Oklahoma and Trae Young come calling. The Jayhawks escaped at home against West Virginia on Saturday and drew even atop the conference standings when Baylor knocked off the Red Raiders later that night.

Kansas closed out West Virginia with a 19-3 run as Udoka Azubuike scored 21 points and Devonte' Graham contributed 15 points while the defense stepped to the challenge as the Jayhawks put themselves in a position to challenge for a 14th consecutive regular-season championship. "It keeps us in a position to play for something," Kansas coach Bill Self told reporters afterward. "It was big for our guys' confidence, probably." The Sooners dropped their fifth straight game Saturday, 76-66 to Texas, shooting a season-low 30.8 percent with Young continuing to struggle. The 6-2 guard scored 26 points but shot 7-of-21 from the field and is 18-for-58 over his last three games, including 4-of-27 from the arc.

TV:
9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY:
The first place Jayhawks opened as 8.5-point home favorites and that number has yet to move. The total hit betting boards at 167 and has been dropped slightly to 166.5.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (16-10 SU, 8-17 ATS, 16-9 O/U):
Young (29.0 points, 9.2 assists), who added seven assists and five rebounds against Texas, snapped a streak of 20 consecutive missed 3-pointers on Saturday and is averaging 23.6 points per game during the losing skid. "I'm getting guarded like nobody else in the country is being guarded, scouted on like no one else in the country," Young told reporters after the game. ?It's a lot tougher for me to score now than it was in the beginning.? Christian James (12.3 points) was held to 11 points after scoring at least 20 in his previous two games and Brady Manek (11.0 points) connected on 3-of-13 after entering the game shooting 61.7 percent at home.

ABOUT KANSAS (21-6 SU, 13-12-1 ATS, 11-15 O/U):
Azubuike (14.1 points, 7.0 rebounds) made 7-of-8 shots from the field against West Virginia to lift his shooting percentage to 76.9, and the 7-foot sophomore sank 7-of-10 from the free-throw line to raise his season percentage to 44.7. Azubuike is shooting 78 percent from the field in conference play and 86 percent over his last six games. Lagerald Vick (12.8 points) has scored 29 points in his last two games after after reaching double figures in four of his previous 12 contests.

MATCHUP CHART:

Monday College Basketball Best Bet

Miami Hurricanes vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

As the regular season in college basketball winds down we see smaller and smaller CBB betting boards during the weekdays and tonight's only of those occurrences. In total there are just 10 games on the board, but only four of them involve teams from a Power Five conference.

And while the Oklahoma/Kansas rematch between two Top 25 teams will dominate storylines, it's the critical matchup in the ACC that I'm investing in tonight.

Notre Dame (-4.5); Total set at 140.5

This is the one and only meeting of the regular season between the Hurricanes (18-8 SU) and Fighting Irish (16-11 SU) as both teams jockey for positioning in the upcoming ACC Tournament. The first goal is to stay out of the bottom six so you at least get one bye to begin the proceedings, a goal both teams are in jeopardy of failing to reach.

Notre Dame is in a tougher position in that regard being in 12th place at 6-8 SU in conference play, but Miami holds that coveted 9th spot (and a 1st round bye) at just 7-7 SU in the conference. With each team having just a few games remaining, there is no question these are must win games for both sides, and the Irish have to be thankful that they are at home.

Home court usually means good things for talented college programs, but the 9-4 SU record the Irish have on their home floor leaves a bit to be desired. Granted, the ACC is loaded with great teams at the top, but with conference home losses to UNC, Virginia Tech, and Louisville, the latter two having basically identical SU records to the Hurricanes, the Irish will have to be at their best tonight.

A win on their home floor is far from a certainty this year for Notre Dame, and with Miami being one of just five teams in the conference with a winning record in true road games (6-4 SU), the Hurricanes will be ready to put up a fight.

Miami comes into this game as the colder of the two squads having lost three in a row both SU and ATS. Saturday's 62-55 loss at home against Syracuse was a little surprising given Miami closed at -4 for the game, but the money-burning Hurricanes (2-8 ATS last 10) have just not been kind to bettors since the calendar flipped over to 2018. That's part of the reason they are catching multiple possessions here, as along with Notre Dame going 3-1 SU and ATS in their last four games overall, the majority of bettors have more faith in this Irish squad.

VegasInsider.com's betting percentage numbers currently show more than 80% of the early action on the Irish so far as they are the home team, playing better basketball at the moment, and in more desperate need of a win. However, we aren't likely to see another 37-point effort from Notre Dame's Matt Farrell like he had on Saturday as he's been alternating great games with poor ones his last few outings. Farrell (along with Temple Gibbs) is the go-to guy for Notre Dame, but prior to his 37-point effort on Saturday on 12 of 17 shooting, he was coming off a 3-for-18 game (1-for-12 from three) against UNC where he had just nine points.

Prior to that outing it was another great night against FSU as Farrell had 28 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field (6-for-10 from three) as consistency has been something he's lacked all year. That pattern could easily continue tonight against Miami's stout defense which is one of the better ones in the conference, and when Notre Dame is held to under 70 points the Irish losses tend to follow.

Miami only gives up 66.1 points per game on the year, and they'll look to that defense to dictate the pace and tempo tonight. I understand the lack of trust many bettors will have with the Hurricanes at the moment given their recent results, but the last three times they have been road underdogs (all of +5 or less) they are 2-1 SU and ATS with the only loss coming in OT against Florida State.

Recent form for both sides has influenced this line too much in my opinion, as Miami's not only got a great shot at keeping this one within this number, I consider them a live underdog to win this game outright as well. The road underdog has won SU the last two times these two have met and I would not be surprised to see tonight's game follow suit.

Best Bet: Miami +4.5

TOP 25 THIS WEEK: Blue Raiders play with 1st AP ranking
February 20, 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Middle Tennessee has upset power-conference teams in the past two NCAA Tournaments and reached 20 wins for the third straight season. Now the Blue Raiders have another milestone: their first appearance in the AP Top 25 poll.

Middle Tennessee checked in at No. 24 in Monday's latest poll and will play as a ranked team for the first time Saturday at home against UAB as part the week's national Top 25 schedule.

''The sustainability part is what you strive for,'' coach Kermit Davis said in an interview with The Associated Press. ''I just think it's the culture of it. Since I've been here, you're just striving to kind of get your brand like a Gonzaga or a Butler or schools that just kind of do it every year.''

The Blue Raiders (22-5, 14-1 Conference USA) are certainly doing that these days.

Two seasons ago, they won 25 games and pulled the biggest upset of the NCAA Tournament by beating Final Four favorite and second-seeded Michigan State in the opening round. They followed that by winning 31 games last year and beating fifth-seeded Minnesota in the first round in 2017.

Along the way, Middle Tennessee has gone 23-3 in road games over two seasons, including a 12-1 mark after Saturday's win at Louisiana Tech.

The Blue Raiders are led by Alabama graduate transfer Nick King, who started his career at Memphis. The 6-foot-7 forward is averaging 21.4 points and 8.4 rebounds.

Middle Tennessee is trying to maintain its hold on the Conference USA lead with Old Dominion and Western Kentucky sitting a game back in the loss column. The Blue Raiders have three home games left, including March 1 against the Hilltoppers.

Davis said he doesn't think that the ranking will be a distraction - ''If we get beat, that's not going to be the reason why,'' he said - but it is something Davis said the Blue Raiders plan to savor with a few days off before playing again.

''It's great for our players, it's great for our fan base,'' Davis said. ''You're trying to grow your fan base, so it is (important). We all understand that we've got a lot of work ahead of us and big games. But you better believe it, the Middle Tennessee faithful around the country will love seeing their name in the AP poll.''

VIRGINIA'S MARCH

Top-ranked Virginia (24-2, 13-1) can wrap up the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season race this week. They lead fifth-ranked Duke by three games in the loss column and own the head-to-head tiebreaker from their win at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 27 , so they can clinch at least a share of the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for the ACC Tournament in Brooklyn by beating Georgia Tech on Wednesday.

Win that one, and they travel to Pittsburgh - now 0-15 in the league - to claim the regular-season race outright Saturday.

WEEKEND TESTS

There's a top-10 matchup in the Big 12 this week with No. 8 Kansas visiting No. 6 Texas Tech on Saturday, with the Jayhawks seeking to avenge an 85-73 home loss to the Red Raiders on Jan. 2.

That's part of a test-filled weekend for some top-tier teams, with No. 2 Michigan State (at Wisconsin), No. 3 Villanova (at Creighton) and No. 6 Gonzaga (at BYU) all playing on the road.

WATCH LIST

Baylor (17-10, 6-7 Big 12) has vaulted itself into NCAA Tournament contention with five straight wins. Now the Bears are on the edge of the AP Top 25 with a couple of chances to play their way into next week's poll - and strengthen that postseason resume.

The Bears host No. 21 West Virginia on Tuesday then travel to TCU - which has been ranked earlier this season - on Saturday.

And in the Southeastern Conference, both Kentucky and Arkansas are within reach of the rankings entering Tuesday's matchup. The Razorbacks also visit Alabama on Saturday.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Six more baseball over/under win totals for this season:

San Francisco 81.5

St Louis, 81.5

Toronto 81

Tampa Bay 77.5

Pittsburgh 73

San Diego 69.5

Quote of the Day
?I think wide receiver. Exceptional athlete. Exceptional ability to make you miss. Exceptional acceleration. Exceptional instinct with the ball in his hand ? and that?s rare for wide receivers. This guy is incredible in the open field. Great ability to separate. Short and a little bit slight and clearly, clearly not the thrower the other guys are.?
Former NFL GM Bill Polian, on Louisville?s QB Lamar Jackson, who is 6-3, by the way

Tuesday?s quiz
How many major league baseball teams call California home?

Monday?s quiz
Baltimore Colts drafted John Elway, then traded him to Denver.

Sunday?s quiz
Charlotte Hornets drafted Kobe Bryant, then traded him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac.

*******************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) NBA should have an ?ABA Day? once a year, a Friday night with a full schedule where all the games are played with red, white and blue basketballs and the four teams who came from the ABA (Nets-Pacers-Spurs-Nuggets) wear throwback uniforms from the mid-70?s.

12) One thing I saw on the Interweb when I was in Las Vegas but forgot to mention here; when the Eagles had their victory parade after winning the Super Bowl, a guy named Dennis who was 50 or so was there watching the parade while holding a metal urn.

Turns out the urn held the ashes of Dennis? late wife, who was an avid Eagle fan.

?She was a diehard Eagles fan. I had to make sure she was here for this.? Pretty cool.

11) Pretty good weekend for golfer Bubba Watson; he played in the celebrity basketball game at the All-Star Game Friday night, then won the Genesis Open Sunday, his 10th PGA Tour win. Watson joins Phil Mickelson as the only lefties with 10+ Tour wins.

Watson?s wife played in the WNBA, therefore the connection to basketball; he lost 45 pounds last year with an undisclosed illness, dropped out of the top 100 ranking but obviously is doing better this year.

10) Bill Walton was saying on ESPN Saturday night that 27,000 people apply for the 800 spots in UCLA?s School of Engineering; you have to have a perfect 4.0 GPA to have a shot to get in.

9) St Mary?s PG Emmett Naar sprained his ankle in Portland Saturday night, didn?t play in the second half. If he cannot play, Gaels will have a short March, but one thing in their favor is the two weeks off they?ll have between the WCC tourney and the NCAA?s.

8) This from ESPN?s Tim Kurkjian:
Hank Aaron his 755 home runs but never hit 50 in a season.
Eddie Murray hit 504 homers but never hit 40 in a season.
Al Kaline hit 399 homers but never hit 30 in a season.
Ron Fairly hit 215 homers but never hit 20 in a season.

7) Memphis Tigers are last team to go undefeated in conference play two seasons in a row; they did it from 2007-09.

6) Looks like Seattle is going to get an NHL franchise; they never should?ve lost their NBA team, they got screwed over by the league because they wouldn?t be extorted into building a new arena, so the team moved to Oklahoma.

5) Six top 10 college basketball teams lost to unranked teams this past weekend. Strange season.

4) JD Martinez finally signs with the Red Sox for $22M a year for five years. Hope he can get by on that paltry sum.

3) Good news: there is spring training baseball on TV Friday. In three days.

2) How great a job is NBA commish Adam Silver doing? With all the issues the NFL had with national anthem-related issues, somehow the NBA kept all that under wraps and dodged that controversy. Has to be an interesting story behind how he did all that.

1? There are people on the Interweb who want teachers to carry guns: in 10th grade, I had a biology teacher who threw erasers at kids who weren?t paying attention (I?m old enough that I went to school when chalkboards were still a thing).

One day, the teacher throws an eraser at a kid named Nick who was screwing around, but instead he drills the girl sitting next to him, who breaks into tears as everyone else either laughed or stared in disbelief.

Would I have wanted this genius to have been packing heat? Ummmm??no.

Defense a better barometer for ATS success in college basketball
Ashton Grewal

The Virginia Cavaliers owe their 17-5-1 ATS record, and top spot in the AP poll, to their unrivaled defense this season. The Cavaliers allow 4.4 fewer points per game than any other team in the country.

The best defense is a good offense or so the saying goes in sports - although the Oklahoma Sooners are putting that theory to test.

The Sooners are first in the nation in points per game (87.5) and their freshman point guard Trae Young leads the country in scoring and assists. And yet Oklahoma is one of the worst bets in college basketball with an ugly 9-17 ATS record heading into Monday?s matchup with Kansas.

The Sooners are 0-5 straight up in their last five games and 1-10 against the spread in their last 11 games after an outright loss at home to Texas on Saturday as 6.5-point favorites. OU fans downplaying their team?s poor run would fit perfectly in a meme featuring a house fire and a talking dog seating at the kitchen table claiming everything is fine.

Meanwhile, Virginia, the best defensive team in college hoops, is first in the AP Poll rankings and is covering the spread at a 77 percent rate. The Cavaliers aren?t the only D-orientated team making money for their backers this season. Michigan, Texas Tech and Cincinnati are a combined 43-30-2 ATS and all near locks to receive invites to the NCAA Tournament.

Team Points Per Game Season ATS
Oklahoma 87.5 8-17
Villanova 87.4 18-9
Duke 87.4 16-9
Gonzaga 85.2 11-14-11
Creighton 85.1 12-13
Xavier 85.1 19-9
Auburn 84.7 18-7
UNLV 84.7 12-14-1
Savannah State 84.5 0-1
TCU 84.4 13-12-1

What does this mean to college basketball bettors? Which dominant trait (offense or defense) is a more profitable one when it comes to betting on college basketball? The 10 teams allowing the fewest points per game this season are covering the spread at a 56.7 percent clip while the 10 squads averaging the most points are winning ATS at 54.7 percent.

Team Points Allowed Per Game Season ATS
Virginia 52.7 17-5-1
Cincinnati 57.1 13-10-1
Central Florida 60.3 13-8
Old Dominion 62 11-13
Texas Tech 62.5 13-10
Southern Methodist 63.1 7-13-2
Syracuse 63.4 11-14
Michigan 63.5 17-10-1
Loyola-Chicago 63.5 16-7-1
Grand Canyon 63.8 1-1

Looking at the top 10 in offense and defense in college basketball in each of the last five seasons we found the slight wagering edge goes to elite defenses over high-quality offenses. Top-10 defensive teams in points per game are covering the spread in 55.2 percent of their games since the beginning of the 2012-2013 campaign whereas top-offenses own a 53.7 percent ATS win rate.

?There?s a high variance in 3-point shooting which makes it difficult to predict from a game-to-game basis,? Covers Expert Steve Merril says. ?I prefer to lean on slow-paced defensive teams like Virginia rather than the up-tempo, 3-point shooting teams like North Carolina and Duke."

The strategy shouldn?t be followed on the way to the futures book. Eight of the last 10 national champions have ranked inside Ken Pomerory?s adjusted offensive efficiency. North Carolina won last season with the ninth highest-scoring offense and the 127th ranked defense in points allowed per game.

Teams like Virginia might be better for regular season betting but come tournament time it?s important to identify sides that can score against solid defensive teams.

Tuesday's Wagers
February 20, 2018

**West Virginia at Baylor**

-- Baylor (17-10 straight up, 13-7 against the spread) has won five consecutive games and has covered the number in six straight outings. The Bears edged Texas Tech 59-57 as one-point underdogs Saturday in Waco. Terry Maston scored two of his game-high 24 points on the go-ahead jumper with 1:29 remaining. Maston missed six games earlier in the season, but he is coming on strong at the perfect time. The senior forward has scored at least 23 points in three of his team?s past five games. Manu Lecomte went 3-of-14 from the field and was held to 10 points without an assist. Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. finished with seven points, eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one assist against the Red Raiders, who saw their star Keenan Evans leave the game with a toe injury late in the first half.

-- The Westgate SuperBook opened Baylor as a 1.5-point favorite.

-- Scott Drew?s team owns a 13-3 SU record and a 6-3 ATS mark at home this year.

-- Lecomte paces Baylor in scoring (16.5 points per game) and assists (3.5 APG), and the senior guard has drained 39.3 percent of his 3-pointers and 87.3 percent of his free-throw attempts. Lual-Acuil (14.2 PPG) leads the Bears in rebounding (9.2 RPG) and blocked shots (1.8 BPG), while Maston is averaging 10.6 points and 5.7 RPG. Jake Lindsey (4.9 PPG) leads his team in steals (28) and has a 91/33 assist-to-turnover ratio.

-- Baylor is No. 46 in the RPI Rankings, going 2-5 versus the RPI Top 25, 3-7 against the Top 50 and 8-10 versus the Top 100. The Bears have home wins over Kansas, Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma State and Iowa State, in addition to a neutral-court triumph over Creighton. They have road wins at Oklahoma State and at Texas.

-- In Joe Lunardi?s latest edition of ?Bracketology? posted to ESPN.com early Monday, Baylor was a part of his Last Four In. Lunardi had the Bears slated to face St. Bonaventure in a First Four showdown in Dayton. The winner would take on sixth-seeded Kentucky in Nashville. As for West Virginia, it was slotted as a fifth-seed in San Diego (East Region, though) facing Louisiana for the right to advance and play the 4/13 Ohio State-East Tennessee State survivor.

-- When these teams met in Morgantown on Jan. 9, West Virginia (19-8 SU, 11-12 ATS) captured a 57-54 win but failed to cover the spread as a 10-point home ?chalk.? The 111 combined points resulted in a thunder ?under? (148 points) to improve to 3-1 in the past four head-to-head meetings between these Big 12 adversaries. Daxter Miles Jr. and Lamont West scored 12 points apiece for the winners, who were outrebounded 43-32 but forced Baylor into 21 turnovers. Sagaba Konate produced eight points, 12 rebounds, seven blocked shots and one steal. Lecomte scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds for Baylor, while Lual-Acuil finished with 11 points, 10 boards and five blocks.

-- Bob Huggins had every right to be furious in the aftermath of his team?s 77-69 loss Saturday at Kansas as a four-point underdog. West Virginia shot 14-of-26 from 3-point land (53.8%), but it somehow went to the free-throw line merely two times. On the flip side, Kansas went to the charity stripe 35 times. KU made 26 FTs compared to one for WVU. That?s insane and should never happen in a basketball game. Ever!

-- Miles scored 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point land at KU. Jevon Carter added 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and a pair of steals, while Lamont West finished with 11 points.

-- West Virginia is No. 31 in the RPI with its 3-6 record against the Top 25, a 6-6 mark versus the Top 50 and an 11-8 ledger against the Top 100. The Mountaineers have home victories over the likes of Virginia, Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU, Texas and Kansas State, in addition to neutral-floor wins over Missouri and UCF (when Tacko Fall was healthy). They also have road scalps at OU, at Oklahoma State and at K-State.

-- WVU is 4-4 both SU and ATS in eight road assignments.

-- The ?under? is 12-7-1 overall for Baylor, 5-4 in its home contests.

-- The ?under? is 13-10 overall for WVU, 5-3 in its eight road assignments.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**Kentucky at Arkansas**

-- Arkansas (19-8 SU, 14-13 ATS) extended its winning streak to four games both SU and ATS with Saturday?s 94-75 victory over Texas A&M as a three-point home favorite. Jaylen Barford was the catalyst with 21 points, five rebounds and five assists compared to only one turnover. Daryl Macon had 20 on 4-of-6 shooting from long distance, while Daniel Gafford contributed 18 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

-- As of early this morning, most spots had Arkansas installed as a four-point favorite.

-- Mike Anderson?s team has won 14 of its 15 home games at Bud Walton Arena, compiling a 9-6 spread record.

-- Barford is averaging team-bests in scoring (18.6 PPG) and steals (1.1 SPG). The senior guard is averaging 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 APG, in addition to draining 44.3 percent of his treys. Gafford (11.7 PPG) leads the Hogs in rebounding (6.1 RPG), FG percentage (62.3%) and blocks (2.0 BPG), while Daryl Macon (17.0 PPG) is making 43.4 percent of his 3?s and 87.8 percent of his FTAs. Macon has scored at least 20 points in eight his team?s last nine games. The senior guard has handed out 4.0 APG and made 1.1 SPG.

-- Arkansas is ranked 26th in the nation in scoring (82.8 PPG), 29th in FG percentage (48.4%) and 22nd in 3-point accuracy (39.9%).

-- Arkansas is No. 25 in the RPI with its 3-4 record against the Top 25, a 4-4 record versus the Top 50 and a 10-8 ledger when facing Top-100 opponents. Anderson?s bunch has home scalps over Tennessee, Missouri, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Vandy, Fresno State and Bucknell. The Razorbacks have a neutral-court victory over Oklahoma, but that one isn?t aging very well. They have only one road win of note, beating UGA in double overtime at Stegeman Coliseum.

-- Kentucky (18-9 SU,11-16 ATS) ended its four-game winning streak by beating Alabama 81-71 Saturday at Rupp Arena. UK took the cash as a four-point home favorite behind P.J. Washington?s 16 points and five rebounds, while Kevin Knox had 13 points and five boards. Quade Green added 12 points and four assists without a turnover, and Jarred Vanderbilt finished with 11 points, nine boards and two rejections.

-- John Calipari?s team has struggled to a 3-5 record both SU and ATS in eight road assignments.

-- Kentucky is No. 18 in the RPI despite a 1-6 record against the RPI Top 25. UK is 4-7 versus the Top 50 and 13-9 against the Top 100. The ?Cats own home wins over Louisville, Texas A&M, Va. Tech, Georgia, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Vermont and East Tennessee State. They have road victories at West Virginia, at LSU and at Vandy.

-- Knox leads Kentucky in scoring (15.1 PPG) and rebounding (5.5 RPG). Shad Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 12.7 points, 4.5 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game, while Hamidou Diallo is averaging 11.1 points and 4.0 RPG.

-- Kentucky has won five straight games in this rivalry both SU and ATS, winning by margins of 14 points or more each time. The ?under? has cashed in the last four meetings.

-- Totals have been an overall wash (13-13) for the Razorbacks, with the ?over? going 8-6 in their home games. They?ve seen the ?under? hit at a 5-2 clip in their past seven outings.

-- The ?over? is 14-12 overall for the ?Cats, but they?ve seen the ?under? go 5-3 in their eight road contests.

-- ESPN will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Nebraska saw its incredible 16-1 ATS run hit a speed bump Sunday at Illinois. Brad Underwood?s team halted a six-game winning streak for Tim Miles?s squad by rallying from a five-point second-half deficit to win a 72-66 decision. Illinois led by seven at intermission, but Nebraska went on a 16-4 roll to start the second half. The Illini covered as a one-point home favorite. With the loss, the Cornhuskers were left as a part of Lunardi?s First Four Out. They return to action tonight vs. Indiana at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network. The Hoosiers have ripped off four straight outright wins, five consecutive covers and are on a remarkable 11-2 ATS run. Also, they?ve watched the ?under? go 12-3-1 in their past 16 games. As of early this morning, most books had Nebraska favored by four points. The Cornhuskers are 14-1 SU and 11-2 ATS at home this season.

-- Devonte? Graham erupted for 23 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals to lead Kansas to Monday?s 104-74 win over Oklahoma as a nine-point home favorite. KU avenged a January loss in Norman thanks in large part to Malik Newman, the Mississippi State transfer who produced 20 points, three rebounds, two steals and five assists without a turnover. OU?s Trae Young was limited to 11 points and nine assists with five turnovers. The soon-to-be lottery pick hit just 3-of-13 FGAs and 1-of-5 from downtown.

-- LSU will play host to Vanderbilt at 9:00 p.m. Eastern tonight on the SEC Network. The Commodores are winless in nine road games with a 3-6 ATS record. Bryce Drew?s club has won five home games in a row, but it still hasn?t been able to get over the hump outside of Nashville. Vandy was a 4.5-point underdog early this morning. LSU will be looking to avenge a 77-71 loss to the ?Dores as a two-point road underdog on Jan. 20. The 148 combined points slipped ?over? the 144.5-point total. Riley LaChance dropped 26 points on the Tigers and had six rebounds and three assists without a turnover. LaChance had 21 points, five assists and four boards in Saturday?s 71-68 come-from-behind win over Florida. The senior guard has been in double figures in eight of Vandy?s past nine games, producing 19 points or more in five of those. LSU is 11-4 SU and 8-4 ATS at home.

-- Auburn?s dream season took a major blow in Saturday?s loss at South Carolina. Anfernee McLemore, the team?s rim protector who leads the SEC in blocked shots (2.7 BPG), was lost to a season-ending injury that?ll keep him out 4-6 months. McLemore was averaging 7.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. The Tigers return to action Wednesday at home vs. Alabama.

-- Minnesota backers took a brutal Bad Beat in last night?s 73-63 loss at Wisconsin in overtime. The Badgers miraculously covered the number as 7.5-point home ?chalk.? Richard Pitino?s team has lost nine in a row while going 1-8 ATS. The Gophers haven?t tasted a victory since an OT triumph at Penn State on Jan. 15.

-- Texas Tech star Keenan Evans is ?questionable? (toe) for Wednesday?s game at Oklahoma State. Evans is averaging 18.2 points, 3.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.

-- Nevada incurred a big loss during its 77-72 win over Boise State at Taco Bell Arena on Valentine?s Day. Lindsey Drew, the junior guard out of Fairfax High School in Encino, went down with a season-ending Achilles injury. Drew was averaging 8.1 points, 4.3 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.

-- After his Ole Miss team was blown out Saturday at Mississippi State, Andy Kennedy announced that he would start his resignation immediately. Kennedy, who won 20 games nine times during his 12-year tenure in Oxford, initially announced his resignation to be effective at the end of the season last Monday.

-- Mississippi State has covered the spread in seven consecutive games. As of early this morning, Ben Howland?s squad was listed as a 6.5-point underdog for tonight?s crucial game at Texas A&M. The Bulldogs have won at South Carolina, lost in OT at Missouri in controversial fashion and been beaten at the buzzer by Vandy it their past three road outings. The Aggies are 12-2 SU and 5-6 ATS at home. MSU might without Aric Holman, who was ?questionable? this morning after leaving Saturday?s 79-62 win over Ole Miss with a leg injury. Holman is averaging 11.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots per game.

-- Texas A&M?s Duane Wilson, the grad transfer from Marquette, is ?out? for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Wilson was averaging 9.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game.

-- Already down Martin Krampelj to a season-ending injury, Creighton lost Jacob Epperson for the rest of the year during Saturday?s rare home loss to Marquette. Krampelj was the Bluejays third-leading scorer (11.9 PPG), top rebounder (8.1 RPG) and had a team-best 67.1 FG percentage. Epperson missed the first 2.5 months of the season before returning in the last six games. He was starting to hit his stride in the last two games, scoring with 29 points in only 26 minutes of playing time. As of early this a.m., Greg McDermott?s team was listed as a 4.5-point underdog tonight at Butler.
