i agree that this is a mistake & a perfect reason why i won't vote for a democrat....

by Ralph Peters

February 17, 2007 --

PROVIDING aid and comfort to the enemy in wartime is treason. It's not "just politics." It's treason.

And signaling our enemies that Congress wants them to win isn't "supporting our troops."

The "nonbinding resolution" telling the world that we intend to surrender to terrorism and abandon Iraq may be the most disgraceful congressional action since the Democratic Party united to defend slavery.

The vote was a huge morale booster for al Qaeda, for Iraq's Sunni insurgents, and for the worst of the Shia militias.

The message Congress just sent to them all was, "Hold on, we'll stop the surge, we're going to leave - and you can slaughter the innocent with our blessing."

We've reached a low point in the history of our government when a substantial number of legislators would welcome an American defeat in Iraq for domestic political advantage.

Yes, some members voted their conscience. But does anyone believe they were in the majority?

This troop surge might not work. We can't know yet. But we can be damned sure that the shameful action taken on the Hill while our troops are fighting isn't going to help.

And a word about those troops: It's going to come as a shock to the massive egos in Congress, but this resolution won't hurt morale - for the simple reason that our men and women in uniform have such low expectations of our politicians that they'll shrug this off as business as usual.

This resolution has teeth, though: It's going to bite our combat commanders. By undermining their credibility and shaking the trust of their Iraqi counterparts, it makes it far tougher to build the alliances that might give Iraq a chance.

If you were an Iraqi, would you be willing to trust Americans and risk your life after the United States Congress voted to abandon you?

Now that Donald Rumsfeld's gone, the Democrats are doing just what they pilloried the former Secretary of Defense for doing: Denying battlefield commanders the troops and resources they need.

Congresswoman Pelosi, have you no shame?

As a former soldier who still spends a good bit of time with those in uniform, what infuriates me personally is the Doublespeak, Stalin-Prize lie that undercutting our troops and encouraging our enemies is really a way to "support our troops."

As for bringing them home, why not respect the vote the troops themselves are taking: Sustained re-enlistment rates have been at a record high.

And our soldiers and Marines know they'll go back to Iraq or Afghanistan. And no, Senator Kerry, it's not because they're too stupid to get a "real" job like yours or because they're "mercenaries." Some Americans still believe in America.

If our troops are willing to fight this bitter war, how dare Congress knife them in the back?

On Thursday night, I was in Nashville as a guest of the 506th Regimental Combat Team - with whom I'd spent all too brief a time in Baghdad.

The occasion was their welcome-home ball, complete with dress uniforms spangled with awards for bravery. Proud spouses sat beside their returned warriors.

Of course, those soldiers were glad to be home with their loved ones. But they also know they'll go back to one theater of war or another - and no one complained.

They share a value that Congress has forgotten: duty. They're willing to bear the weight of the world on their shoulders. Because they know that freedom has a price.

As you entered the ballroom for the event, the first thing you saw was a line of 34 photographs. A single white candle softly lit each frame. Those were the members of the 506th who didn't come home.

Soldiers honor their dead. It's the least Congress could do to honor the living men and women in uniform.

You don't support our troops by supporting our enemies.

Please reread this and then think about the source. In order to make his argument, he is making up quotes and generalizing. The lefty propaganda is very similar, and neither is worth using as a source.

AR: You can't read articles written by right-wing propaganda pushers and use that as the basis for not ever voting democratic.

Peters - yeah he doesn't have a biased agenda:rolleyes: . If anyone thought the troop surge would assure victory, then nobody would vote against it. AR - do you think 20,000 more troops would give us victory? Perhaps the motivation behind the vote was to save lives. Many feel feel we are in a fatally flawed strategic situation and the best thing is cut human losses at this point. Many Republicans and many people who served in battle voted for this thing, you know.

I don't know if I support this move by congress, but to suddenly blame them for Iraq being F'd up is completely ludicrous. The spin is absurd. Bush gets us in the mess, but now the blame is on the Democrat congress???!!! That's just idiotic.

...............................................................
LONDON, England (AP) -- Prince Harry will be serving as a soldier in Iraq by the end of the month, a British newspaper reported Saturday.

Defense Secretary Des Browne is expected to announce February 26 that the prince, who is third in line to the throne, will be deployed along with his regiment near Basra in southern Iraq, The Daily Mirror newspaper reported, citing an unnamed senior military official.

A royal family spokesman declined to comment and the Defense Ministry called the report speculative, saying upcoming Iraq deployments had yet to be finalized.

The 22-year-old prince, known as Troop Commander Wales by his regiment -- the Blues and Royals -- has trained to command 11 soldiers and four Scimitar tanks.

The Defense Ministry has previously confirmed Harry could go to Iraq if his unit was deployed there, but said he might be kept out of situations where his presence would jeopardize his comrades.

Prince William, training as a troop leader within the Blues and Royals, cannot be deployed to war zones because he is second in line to the British crown.

Britain has 7,000 troops based in southern Iraq and plans to reduce numbers through the course of 2007, government officials have said.

Harry, who graduated last year from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, said in a 2005 interview that he was keen to fight for his country.

"There's no way I'm going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country," he said.

In joining the military, Harry followed a royal tradition: Charles was a pilot with the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy and Harry's grandfather, Prince Philip, had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy.

Harry's uncle, Prince Andrew, was a Royal Navy pilot and served in the Falklands war against Argentina.

Now Prince Harry is going to Iraq ! WTF

This is one of the dumbest articles I've ever read (....not the Prince Harry one). You don't actually buy into that, do you AR? I mean he uses every stupid catchphrase possible. It's Limbaugh-level drivel.

To quote David Byrne and Talking Heads, "STOP MAKING SENSE". The faction that argues that voting against sending 20 or 30,000 troops is a terrorist victory is not thinking logically. Simply a knee-jerk reaction to not getting their way.

According to this article we can never discuss any war at any time or we will be giving the enemy comfort. I am not sure but I don't think it has ever been proven. We still don't know how we win? Wouldn't it make sense for the insurgents to wait for us to leave before attacking. Their attacks keep us their guarding Halliburten. Which is the whole reason we are there anyway, but thats another story.
If they didn't want us there they would leave and wait to attack a weaker Iraqi police force that take on the full power of the United States Military. Oh, thats right, we don't go in with fukk force sorry. We fight on their terms.

Well, if you can write an article like this and have someone believe it and procclaim they will never vote for a democrat because of a letter like this what can you do? i guess some people think that if its written it must be true.

first of all...i like ralph peters.don't always agree with him, but i usually agree with at least part of what he says.

as i stated here a few times i agreed with the invasion of iraq.....but have been very critical on how it has been fought....ie....i have always felt that the iranian & syrian borders should have been closed as part of the invasion strategy.

not ever being in iraq i don't know if an extra 20,000 troops would be effective....my initial reaction was that it wouldn't be enough. but the way that i look at it is that any change in strategy (other than retreating) is better than doing the same old same old.

gmoz22 quote...."AR: You can't read articles written by right-wing propaganda pushers and use that as the basis for not ever voting democratic."

why most of you read left wing propaganda to verify your positions....

i at least posted how i stand on issues in the thread that dtb started....other than chadman i haven't seen anybody else post their positions.maybe posters here are afraid to show how they really stand on the issues of the day.

and sponge don't post to me because i never read what you have to say...so you're just wasting your time.

editing this post to clarify....the way things are in today's world...i'll either vote for a republican or not vote at all...i have no faith in a democrat as the leader of this country....but that's
just my opinion...it doesn't mean that i'm right...it doesn't mean that i'm wrong.

Stevie you know what is sad? To sit here and waste time having to fight douchebags like this author of this article. Maybe the Dems could come up with a plan but they are always having to start the day off answering to scum like this in our very own country. It really is so much wasted energy but its how the neocons play. If they really cared about the troops like they act like they do they wouldn't be lying like this and wasting all this energy trying to divide a nation. They would try to think of a way out of this gigantic mess they put us in. A mess now this fellow who started the thread will eventually blame all on the democrats. He would rather vote for the people who put us in this mess and against the people who want us out of this debacle. It is a real shame how some people just can't get past the partisanship and actually use their own mind to make a decision instead of letting someone else do their thinking for them.

AR: If you go back and read my response to your initial post, you will see that I mentioned how lefty propaganda is very similar, and neither is worthy of being called a credible source.

As for the DTB thread about posting positions on political issues, I did say (in that thread) that I'd get back in there and post my views.

If you have notice i haven't posted anything directed at you since you came back from Vegas. For some strange reason when i saw your picture you reminded me of someone so i laid off of you. You do look like a genuine nice guy but im an equal opportunist and i have had run ins with almost everyone on the left. If you are gonna post an idiotic thing like you just posted i will state my opinion. That is what post boards are for. I swear i saw a post from Hammer stating something about you not wanting him to post in your threads. Cmon man is this necessary to choose who you want to post in your threads? Kinda sounds like when general Shineski wanted more troops and the Bushies fired his ass because of his opinion. Weasal and i have two very different opinions but we can take it to another thread and be civil and i actually enjoy what he writes. He doesn't lay ground rules.
