Horn and the dispatcher spoke for several minutes, during which Horn pleaded with the dispatcher to send someone to catch the men and vowed not to let them escape. Over and over, the dispatcher told him to stay inside. Horn repeatedly said he couldn't.

When the men crawled back out the window carrying a bag, Horn began to sound increasingly frantic.

"Well, here it goes, buddy," Horn said as a shell clicked into the chamber. "You hear the shotgun clicking, and I'm going."

A few seconds passed.

"Move," Horn can be heard saying on the tape. "You're dead."

Boom.

Click.

Boom.

Click.

Boom.

Horn redialed 911 and told the dispatcher what he'd done.

Gotta love that. Not only is he protecting his home he is watching out for his neighbors. Let me live next to this guy and I wont need any guns myself.

Are there any t-shirts with Horn on the front of them yet? As soon as you find out order me two please. I will throw away my Superman shirt.

I was under the impression that all Australians, except Mr. Christo of course, had BIG knives and excellent senses of humor.

I'm assuming you're the exception:shrug:

Not much that a "BIG knife" & a cricket bat won't stop down here CG.........but then again hand guns and most other arms are illegal down under. Rare that there are "armed" burgs in Australia. A good dog will keep your castle safe.

Shit.....if someone gets shot it makes the 6 o'clock news!!!

Disarm your country and you'll cut your crime rate. :nono:

Looks like that old "right to bear arms" from centuries ago is really coming back to haunt you
Somehow I doubt the Poms want to come back!!

As for Scotty's latest article....that old coot deserves "the chair". Now that's one thing you have got right!

He was middle aged not Pa Kettle and he deserves to be able to sit in his home on a sunny afternoon and not have to bear witness to one of his friends and neighbors be victimized by heartless career criminals. Guy has an eight month at home and is out robbing homes in broad daylight. His sheer stupididty would have unltimately got him killed in the next few days anyway. A crime spree was avoided and a street slug was deposited in his ultimate appointment. Hope my taxes go down.

Mate....he was 61!! Unless you guys live to 120...I'd hardly call him "middle aged"!! :142smilie

He did start off ok by calling the cops.....but then that old vigilante mentality kicked in. If he is lucky....he will have another 60(!) years in the big house to think about whether he should have hung up the phone having done his civic duty and closed the blinds!

I am in no way condoning the original crime tho.

are you serious?
If your home was busted into and your valuables swiped by some punks and your neighbors see it.. you want them to dial the phone, hang up and then lock their doors and turn a blind eye?

yer a great neighbor man.

Do you think that maybe after the burglars left it would be ok for the old guy to go over and leave a note on the front door?

"your home got robbed, I called the cops though. See ya at the weekly lodge meeting sunday night!"

Nah.....you're right marine.....I could probably live out my life with this on my conscious.....that some trigger-happy neighbour took a life or two for the price of my dvd player!!
I could go visit him once a month inside to thank him for wasting the rest of his life over my material possessions.

I would never ask anyone to pay that price.

Seems life isn't worth too much to you.

I'd actually thank the old guy for calling the cops and not risking his own safety by getting further involved. Possessions are replaceable. The law gets payed to handle the rest of it.

Hey Mate!

You're right, I could of sworn I read he was middle aged but then I re-read it and its right there in the first few lines that he was 61 but that is of no consequence really and is not germane to the point.
Joe Horn did exactly what was done prior to it taking somewhere in the neighborhood of a year to prosecute and begin punishing felons for less than capital crimes. You live in Australia, I don't. I live here. I know what I will do and I know what my neighbors will or won't do and I don't believe any of them would have the cahones that Mr. Horn had and I would have to spend some time with my insurance agent and the police describing what was taken. You may find that as little more than a nuisance and you may feel that if caught, which in all likelyhood is very unlikely, they will be punished for their crimes. Thats great. Thanks for the help and while it might not affect you and the boys down at the pub having having a tinnie of amber oil with your mates, you know the ones with awning over the toy shop, getting just full as a boot shooing away the mozzies on your way to the dunny, it definitely affects some of us over here on the mainland. I would hazard to guess that you do not have the same problems that we do here and please do not bore me with meaningless rhetoric on how we should disarm everybody because that is simply not plausible nor an answer. People, and I use the term loosely, in prison for murder most always have a history of career crime. I am quite sure that there are several incindences that could be considered an accidental death due to break ins and such and you are actually suggesting from a completely different country that we turn a blind eye to crime. Well that may make everything apples down there mate but if I see you or anyone else breaking in to my neighbors house, count to ten and wait for your new lead hat. And the best part is I wouldn't lose a second of sleep and I, much like Mr. Horn, will enjoy the comfort of resting my head on my newly safer pillow for the rest of my days. He will never ever ever be convicted, not here, not in Texas, not anywhere near Houston and the dirty thieving bastards that got shot were probably pommies anyway and were surely a snag short of a barbie anyway and will remain dead. Its not like these were swaggies looking for work, they were commiting a crime and got their asses capped. Sorry about their luck, maybe next person with an 8 month old at home will think about gainful employment as an option now.

Never suggested turning a blind eye. The guy did the right thing and called the cops.

MESA, Ariz. -- A Mesa father armed with a BB gun confronted two home invaders, one of them brandishing an AK-47 assault rifle, after they grabbed his daughter by the hair at gunpoint, police said.

"I woke up and first I thought it was my mom screaming," said 15-year-old Gricel Ruelas. "Then I heard people shout, 'Open the door, open the door.'"

The intruders had kicked through the front door and were headed straight for her parents' room when they heard the girl screaming.

"I was going to hide in the closet, but that's when they got me," Ruelas said.

The men broke into her room and one of them grabbed her by the hair, she said.

"They had a gun to my head, like a big old gun, and the guy's saying , 'Come here.'"

Police said the weapon was an AK-47 assault rifle.

The 15-year-old said she fought back.

"I wasn't going to let them take me," she said.

Her father, Leonardo Lucia, came to her rescue and threatened them with a BB gun, police said.

He and the girl's uncle detained one man, but the one who had the rifle dropped it and took off running, according to officers.

"I'm so happy they were here," Ruelas said. "If they weren't, I wouldn't be here."

The man who was arrested, Daniel Lopez, 37, was on parole at the time, police said.

Lopez was arrested around 4:30 a.m. Sunday and booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary, aggravated assault and criminal damage.

Police said they hope he can lead them to his accomplice.

I hear ya big boy. That is a pretty good dictionary though, and yes you guys do talk like that all the time. I bet you have all kinds of those outdoor bars where everyone sits around in khaki shorts and short sleeve shirts drinking Fosters and shooing away the mossies. Get out of my head!!
Seriously though, no worries my Aussie friend, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect yours, just don't agree with it at this point. Doesn't mean I won't take your side if NYSportsfan or someone like that takes my side.

Cheers mate, and if you don't talk like that then you are missing out. It really is quite satisfying.

This is my rifle.

There are many like it, but this one is MINE.

My rifle is my best friend. It is my life.

I must master it as I must master my life.

My rifle without me is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless.

I must fire my rifle true.

I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me.

I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...

My rifle and myself know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire,

the noise of our bursts, nor the smoke we make.

We know it is the hits that count. We will hit...

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life.

Thus, I will learn it as a brother.

I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories,
its sights, and its barrel.

I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage.

I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready.

We will become part of each other. We will...

Before God I swear this creed.

My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country.

We are the masters of our enemy.

We are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until there is no enemy, but PEACE.

An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed by his intended victim Thursday night in south DeKalb County, police said.

Ronald Johnson, his wife and two children, ages 4 and 16, were returning to their Stardust Circle home shortly before 9 p.m. when "he noticed two men standing at the bottom of his driveway by a fence," DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.

Johnson, 36, told police that as he pulled into his driveway, "those suspects pulled out handguns and attempted to rob him," Parish said.

"The victim was armed and he pulled out his gun and immediately started firing, and the suspects fled," Parish said. "The victim and the family then ran inside the home and called police."

When officers arrived, they found one of the suspects dead in the back yard, a handgun near his body," Parish said.

She said the second suspect was not believed to have been shot. Detectives are investigating the possibility that there was a third suspect acting as a lookout, Parish said.

The identity of the suspect killed has not been released. Parish said Johnson would not be charged in the shooting.
