Jack, it's funny that I ran across this thread yesterday. I got home from work and my wife said she was thinking of buying a Big Green Egg for me for Father's Day. If you don't mind my asking, how much did it cost you? Did you look online to see if you could get a better deal? I would imagine that shipping could be pricey.

by the time you get everything you need, you'll spend around $1000 for the large egg.

the egg was $699, then you need the stand (it's nest  ) then this and that and this and that. i did pay $45 to have THEM assemble it and deliver it. it weighs about 200 pounds.

i'll be grilling steaks later tonight. will let you know how it went.

On the course!
I'll give you, generously, until the 4th of July, before you say this was a mistake.

(I hope I am wrong, though.)

Hey Jack - I own the big green egg.

I love it.

I am sure you already know by reading the other forums, but you can control the temperature within 20 degrees. With a charcoal grill - that's unheard of.

It is also a smoker. If you put soaked cherry wood chips in the charcoal, the flavor of whatever you're cooking is greatly enhanced!

Cooking low and slow is hard to do on a charcoal grill, but not on the egg.

P.S. I wouldn't buy the "nest" with the egg - go ahead and get the wooden cart that the grill shop sells with it.

What are you doing cremating something?

i seared the steaks at 700 degrees, 90 seconds each side, took them off the grill until i got the temp down to 400 degrees and then cooked each side for 6 minutes. 6 minutes was way too long and they came out well done. next time i'll do them 3 minutes on each side and they should be perfect. they were damn good though for my first try.

already got the nest. this thing is gonna be tricky getting the temps down but i'm sure i'll get the hang of it. i got it so i could do slow cooking and smoking as well. :00hour
