Oh, I remember that day..
Oh, I remember that day..
It was early April in 1996 when I had mine done.. I had what they call "windows" put in, and all the dead infected sinus materials cleaned out..
That night was by far the WORST NIGHT OF MY LIFE..
I woke up in the recovery room with 3 YARDS of gauze shoved up in EACH NOSTRIL.. It was quite painful and the skin on my nose nearly tore as it was stretched so far.. I had to keep this gauze in for 24 hours..
I got home and felt ok, but as the meds at the hospital wore off, the pain came back.. I had to take a pain pill they gave me, on an empty stomache, (big mistake) and puked about 30 mins later.. Now, if anyone has ever had all breathing thru their nose completely cut off, and could only breathe thru their mouth, you could imagine puking and trying to breathe at the same time.. some vomit never even made it outta my mouth and I breathed it back down my throat cuz I had to take a breath... After about an hour of vomiting on and off I stabilized myself.. All this gave me a headache like never before, and all the vomiting and pressure on my fresh cut nose/sinuses was so painful I wanted to kill myself.. I was 16 at the time.. I sat up just watching the clock minute by minute, waiting for the sun to come up to get to my doctor appt, to remove the gauze and make sure everything was ok.. I basically cried all night, as my mom cried with me cuz she felt helpless and could tell how much pain i was in..
Finally, I got to the doctor to remove the gauze and check out my nose and stuff..
The doc says "this might burn a bit" so hold on tight.. He started to pull the gauze out of the left nostril little by little.. I'd say after a few feet of gauze was outta the first nostril, I was squeezing the arms of the chair so hard, it broke.. The burn was so bad if felt like someone had a knife in my face and kept slowly turning it..
As he started pulling out the 3 yards of gauze in the right nostril, the pain got so bad I started to vomit.. I was vomiting in the bucket I was holding as he was pulling out the gauze.. I saw the blood red gauze and brown (mucus like) vomit and passed out.. I woke up on a bed a few minutes later with my nose clear of gauze with a little bandage on..
I laid around the house for a few days after and eventually started to feel better after about a week.. Had to wear a bandage around my nose for a few days at school, in case any discharge came out.. yuck!
Now, 11 years later, I dont think it really even helped.. I still get headaches like I used to, and still get colds and sinus infections.. Im actually more prone to getting sick after having that surgery, according to the doctor.. I can breathe decent, but one nostril is still less capable than the other..
I would NEVER EVER EVER go thru that again.. I wouldnt wish it upon my worst enemy.. If my parents werent with me that night, I probably woulda OD' on meds cause the pain was so unbearable..
I hope to god you arent going thru this, man.. Id think they have better technology and less invasive ways to operate now, although I could be wrong..
Good luck!!
