Have done several raves on HSA plans
Here was update in 2007
http://www.madjacksports.com/forum/showthread.php?t=268257&highlight=Health+savings+account

Best thing since sliced bread--especially savings aspect--you get deduction and funds accumulate tax free. Great tax reduction tool.

Odd that you would have significant premium increase Jack--as most come on age banding on people with few claims and you and wife shouldn't hit next banding untill 55.

wayne, i've had an increase every single year since the beginning. never has it stayed the same, ever.

HSA still gonna cost me $700+ a month with $5K deductible. plus my prescriptions out of pocket are in the neighborhood of $250 per month. So, HSA isn't that good of deal for me either. then next year, i'll get fuked over for another 15%-25% increase.

ridiculous.

my next question to my agent today is; what are the rates with $10K deductible?

dirty bastids!

it's ridiculous.

here i go all over again!

STEAMING!

been with bc/bs since my early 20's. never spent one day in the hospital, maybe 2 x-rays in all those years, 1 MRI, many years not even a doctors visit, no broken bones, no operations, NOTHING! all that money they have made off me and now it's apparent they don't want to insure me anymore because i'm a higher risk? **** this whole system. i am SERIOUSLY PISSED OFF!

NOW, if i switch, they wanna bring up that PRE-EXISTING BULLSHIT UP.

yeah, i've been on blood pressure meds since mid 20's. if i take my BP now it's 120/70 and ALWAYS is when they take it. it's ****ing CONTROLLED!

what's the sense of having insurance if they use pre-existing conditions??? that's why i NEED insurance, not for a broken leg, not for a doctors visit, not for a flu shot that i've never had either! i need it in case i have a heart attack. duh!

sorry for the rant, I'M PISSED!

may as well turn over all my assets to them and be "protected" in case of a big problem i have have in the future?

**** them!

When I've looked into an HSA, they didn't make sense for me, either. But I am in a much different situation than Jack. I'm 34, married with 2 kids under 4 years of age with plans to have more kids in the near future.

I think HSAs make a ton of sense for people who are very likely to be able to build up the kitty. taoist and smurphy both sound like perfect candidates for an HSA. What money you don't spend stays in your account, correct?

Then, if that big ticket item unexpectedly came, you would have the money in your account to pay your very high deductible.

I think my family of four with maternity and full dental is about $800. Our co-pays are high, though. $40 doctor visit/$100 emergency room.

We utilize the $4 generics whenever possible. The $40 doctor visit hurts with kids. But overall, it's a great plan for everyone in our company. There are 3 single, white males plus one black female... then me and my family on our plan. All of our other employees (20 or so) are not covered due to them being in other countries. And we have a good friend doc in Atlanta that sees them for free (whatever insurance pays).

if you can hook me up with a plan like that with no pre-x there's a $2000 under the table bonus for you.

Jack--getting ready to hit busy time at office but send me info on pre-ex and drugs you take.

I'll send you a little scouting report of do's and don't on your trip to agent.

Lots of things can make big diff on ratings.

One example I see all the time is ht/wt

1lb diff is it takes to put you in diff underwriting catagory--you can always fudge around 15 lbs or 1/2 inch on height.

Add up the premiums a person could pay by being put in another class intially just because agent didn't ask " are you sure you weigh 210 and not maybe 206?

5000 deductible 10k max out of pocket

that's my best option yet. well, cheapest.

my prescriptions would cost me out of pocket $323 (just called pharmacy) so maybe that's my best bet.

I think "not preferred" factors in that you smoke.

Wayne -- at $421 per month, how much of that goes into the savings account for future spending? Or is what you put back on top of this amount?

Thanks for the info.

and i get a quote without the prescription plan? guess what? it doesn't matter. they figure that right in and i'm going to pay for prescriptions either out of my pocket or the whole amount is added to my monthly premium. there's no difference to speak of.

the reason i'm posting this crap and boring some with the rant is:

1- maybe someone out there will read this and come up with an idea for me. ie; wayne, agent and the boys who all have been helpful.

2- maybe someone else having the same problems will get ideas to help them out.

Now how in the hell could I have known that? Maybe the capitalized "Not HSA" that he wrote???
:mj07:

man, your rates are high too. when i had kids on my plan it was no extra charge by getting a family plan and you guys are 20 years younger and don't smoke. you're getting it too :142hump: :mj15:

dawgball, the company that I work for has a healthcare spending account option. I max it out every year (2500 this year), and usually have it used up in 4 months. It's like finding money; they give you a credit card that you can use, and it's all pretax money, so it helps you with the income taxes a good deal. Not sure how that can't be right for you or anybody for that matter? I need to look into getting one on my own too.

Blood pressure under control should be no prob Jack--

The reason your getting high alternate quotes is because your getting them from same carrier your current coverage is with. I'm assuming you are using a non formulary drug for HBP--considering the cost.
You might consider going on generic for month or so before looking elsewhere for quote--then when you list drug your taking and they see its low cost generic might also lower your rate--then you can change back once you get new rate.

Smoking issue. Question If a non smoker takes out health ins and starts smoking the next week--your rates don't change to smoker--think about it ;)

wayne, i take altace for the BP and the most effective drug they have found for me since i started taking BP meds. recently they came up with a generic that reduces the cost from $150.99 to $127.99. yee haa.

the other one is prevacid with no generic that costs $178.99. maybe there is an alternate that will work that is less expensive

the other thing i take is only 15 bucks so no worries there.

if i switch carriers i will have to go on pre-existing conditions for 9 months. wtf good is that?

this is the info i have received so far and what i have been told from 3 sources.
