Hows the hydroponic farm going? Any pics of the setup since going somewhat off the grid? What's planted for the spring. Obviously you aren't using pesticides so is the anything to keep the critters from destroying the crops?

Besides that of course.

I was serious btw :0074 We don't have the land to grow much but we met a local organic farmer whom we get a lot of our food from. There's something nice about shaking the hand of the guy growing our food. I thought of you guys this morning when I met farmer bob for our pickup.

pretty sure this should be in the Food and Drink forum.

Let's keep the General (trash, etc.) forum cleaned up.

We tilled up 3,400 square feet in the fall. The soil isn't that great. We planted clover and covered it with leaves a couple times. Also some manure. It should be ready to plant this spring but all we have in there right now is some garlic. We have a couple really good compost bins to till in this spring plus I started a worm farm that should help the soil. On top of that we have 12 raised beds. Big ones. We did lots of green beans, basil, edamame, squash, etc in there this fall. We have a couple rows of grape vines and made our own wine. Jes started a big herb garden out front. It has about every herb known to man along with some lavender, echinacea, etc. We planted some apple, peach, and pear trees. They will fruit a little this year :00hour

I have been so covered up with the basketball season I haven't done anything on the property this winter in terms of the garden. We have 1 or 2 more weeks tops depending on how far we go in the playoffs and then I will get started.

Our neighbor is an 84 year old retired pharmacist. He keeps bees. We have a little turtle pond with some Koi fish and frogs and the bees come over to drink and pollenate everything. It's perfect! He swears he is the only one who can keep bees without chemicals. Something about mites and he uses a secret powdered sugar spray. :0074

Our goal is about half of our own food (for 9 people) this year and 75% within the next couple years. We are slowly converting our sun room with 18 skylights to grow some things out there and hopefully do my aqua-ponics. It was a lap pool so we had to cover all that up and put a floor in.

I will get some pictures up for you guys or maybe Jes will do some blogging!

The girls are ready to bust out their new 4- wheeler and help!

We really found the dream property. 6 acres. We fenced it all for the dogs. We are planning on 2 goats and some chickens this spring. Private road that dead ends not far past us so no traffic. Wooded lot. I mean come on! :00hour

find busted bags of seed at any of your visits to town..usually at least 1/2 price

or better yet find a John Deere feed and seed house outlet nearby..

around 40.00 bucks for 50lb bag of seed.

with as many trees and critters I would go au natural except for wild flowers and a few roses ..

overseeding each Sept. where the children play will help keep in grassy and able to dry out faster in the summer ..

serious heavy equipment needed to really grade it out and get the farmland estate look.and way to costly.

you got the dream ya lucky ex playboy..

great lookin' smart wife and beautiful kids..

always great to see and read when somebody finally gets it..life ...it's everything and more.
