Well, I suppose the implication here is that anyone who thinks that Sapp's hit is a cheap shot is some kind of wuss who 'never played the game' and therefore does not understand the mentality of the average jock. I'm curious what level of play is required in order to qualify as having an understanding of the game. Would intramural flag football count? Pop Warner? Perhaps being a high school bench warmer? Or must one attain the level of college player? Semi-pro? But then, who can really understand 'the game' except the true Pro Players themselves? I mean, they play a totally different game do they not?

Basically we have people here who are jock types who think it's OK to maliciously earhole a guy. I happen to think that that kind of stuff is bad for the game - call me a wuss, but I don't like seeing guys hauled off on stretchers because of cheap shots (well, I may make an exception for Sapp after this incident).

BTW boys, I've dealt with you jock types all my life so please be careful, we're not in a bar where you can shake me around, we're dealing only with words here and in a battle of wits - you fellows are only half-armed.

En Garde!

stupid comment on my part...i don`t know anybody on the board personally...usually when people are so cavalier about something that could be so devastating,in most instances, they haven`t experienced it or something similar themselves...i wouldn`t be on sapp so hard if the block had had anything to do with the play...legal?...maybe.....we`ll se when the league weighs in...again,i deserved the shots for my condescending comments......lost my cool myself...don`t like to see people hurt needlessly....g.l.

I wasn't implying anything, I don't think a point is inherently more valid because of experience, I was just surprised that gw's take on who was on which side was opposite of mine.

garden,

no problem, just didn't want to be pigeoned holed because of an opinion which I think skinar is doing now. Problems with jock types your whole life. I could make a great joke here, but don't want to be accused and jumped on for being insensitive.:D

IMO being carted off the field on a stretcher does not mean it was a cheap shot. If that was the case, the guy who hit Tommy Maddox should be banned from FB and many others.

I'm sorry, but this is professional FB. You probably feel all the rules to protect the QB aren't enough, let the QB have flags hanging from there belts and just play flag FB for the QB:D

Butkus, Huff, Nitchke, Deacon Jones, and all the rest are LTAO at all these wuss rules. Now I'm not saying some things needed to be done, but you talk about jock types and non jock types, who is running FB now, Owners, think they ever played the game:shrug:

I guess it boils down to how you perceive the game and yes, the bias of if it happens to your favorite team.

We can agree to disagree, but bringing in your problems from your past is questionable, jocks are all stupid, that's a narrow view and completely out of line:nono:

I said above I would wait till I saw some replays. It was a cheap shot. You have to be dumb not to see that. Or just never played the game or both. And his display after the hit was just shameful on his part. And what is sad he thinks he was helping save his man from being tackled by a guy troting 25 to 30 yrds from the play. Oh ya baby Clifton was going to catch up with that play and make the tackle. If he had 3 minutes to get there. Payback does happen in the NFL and that is sad to. But it wont come from the Packers. It will happen from another team. Like I said there is a code between the players do not ruin a players carrer with a cheap shot. Yes carrer ending plays happen with just the reguler play on the field. But this was stupid and his I Q after the hit and the game told us that. Oh well!

On the course!
I've seen the replay a few times and I can't see how anyone can defend Sapp's actions 100%

For one, the field is 53.33 yards across, so they were well away from the play. It is quite clear, Sapp is teeing off on a guy who is "jogging" at, best, and CLEARLY ending his pursuit, and starting to stand upright. He had every right to "block" him, so I can't argue the fact that he did. Like the old axiom of law, just because it's legal, doesn't make it right.

Sapp was going full tilt, and did lower his head right into the helmet of Clifton. I have no doubt that he will be fined this week.

How hard do you have to hit a 300+ pound guy, to take him right off of his feet? Also, he was out cold for 5 minutes! You don't get knocked unconcious, unless you get your bell rung! (Popped in the head) He was on the turf for over 15 minutes.....that's pretty serious, guys. If Sapp could lay him out like that, and then yuck it up with the boys, all the while he knows a guy is on his back? That shit is wrong, and can't be defended.

The only reason there isn't a huge stink being made, is because who the hell is Chad Clifton? If Favre threw a pick, and Clifton laid out Sapp in the exact same manor, he would have been tossed out of the league!

I know Warren Sapp plays with an intensity that most don't......that is a great trait to have. But his play was less than heroic.

As far as Sherman goes, why shouldn't he voice his oppinion? I only heard the audio a few times, but I would swear that Sherman was the first to say FU. Sapp and he passed, Sherman tossd his F-Bomb, and Sapp turned around and came back at him. Basically standing up for himself. I guess that's what most would do. But, Sherman had every right to voice his displeasure. The thing is, if I say "FU", I can't be mad when you say it back!

We'll see what happens, but the whole thing was unneccesary.....bottom line.

:nono: Whoever said the head coach should not have said something to Sapp is a bit off base. If a head coach does not stick up for his players, they won't play hard for him. He was defending his players but he was also setting up a revenge factor if these two meet in the playoffs.

What is more disturbing than this confrontation is the fact that after Farve throws a pick that basically cost GB the game, he is over there laughing with Sapp. Hey Brett:thefinger Your team is playing hard and you are single handily costing them the game. If I am on the defense, I am pissed at Brett. Slap Sapp on the head tell him to f off but don't sit there and laugh about it.

England, u.k.
However some of you preceive Warren Sapp, the hit he made was LEGAL AND FAIR.
The whistle had not blown to end the play.
He was moving towards where the play was taking place.
In fact the Packer player should have moved out the way if he didn't want to get involved in the game.
Sapp hit him in the chest, all within the rules.

One of the first laws of american football is "to protect yourself at all times".

What was disgraceful was how Sapp and his team mates behaved on the sidelines after the incident. Now if this was in the UK, the players involved and the team would receive a large fine for bringing the game into dis-repute. On the financial scale that the NFL franchise brings in this should be in the region of $100,000 per player and 20 times that for the team.
It is the team and their officials that are responsible for the public image displayed and portrayed by their players.
A young child will take notice of this. This week he's going to do exactly the same as Sapp and laugh about it.

Will the NFL react. Don't hold you breath, as always it will be swept under the carpet.

Bullldog....:toast: ...i'm glad someone on this board has some sense.

This is FOOTBALL, not ballet or figure skating...

There was a 'chance' that the Packer player could've caught up w/ the TB defender...so Yes, the hit was definetely acceptable.

Swept under the carpet? The NFL has punished everything this year. Suspensions. Fines. You name it.

If they can be accused of anything, it's not sweeping enough under the carpet (sharpie?).

The hit he made was legal, and I don't see a fine coming, but I don't know about FAIR. In my opinion, he made a vicious hit with the intention of taking a guy out. The fact of the matter is, on almost every play, away from the ball and near it, there are opportunities to take guys out who have given up on the play.

The NFL has cracked down on the "last guy in" play. That's where you'd see a "pile-on" and a guy standing next to the pile knowing he can't do anything else, and a defender would come in and CLEAN HIM OUT because the whistle hadn't blown yet. It's a bull-shit hit that demonstrates cowardice instead of toughness on the part of the hitter.

I would put Sapp in the same category. It was a chicken shit hit. My grandma could take a guy out who was standing still watching the play. Of course she's 6'4", 250 and runs a 4.3 forty. [there's a little D&C joke for ya]

I doubt he gets fined, but I wouldnt' be surprised if people start going after his knees.

No shit, but it's not Ultimate Fighting Championship either.

It is so easy to injure someone legally in the NFL. There's a certain respect that goes on among players, and part of that respect involves not cleaning guys out when they've given up on the play.

Why can't we just have clipping, spearing, chop blocks on engaged players, and late hits on the QB? The QB could still get down field and block for the guy he threw to. Why shouldn't a defender be able to lay him out?

I don't think some people are going to be happy until every football player in the nation has a concussion, a collapsed lung, and bones sticking out of his skin. Take away the respect guys have for each other's health and you'll see the game being played with guys built like place kickers.

Comparing that hit to the Ultimate Fighting challenge is ridiculous.

People get hit in the NFL. Obviously the Refs didn't think that it was out of line or he would've been penalized.

If this were anyone other than Sapp I don't think we would be carrying on like this.....Sapp is a WARRIOR...He, unlike some chumps in the league, wants to win and does everything in his power to try and make this happen.

Yeah. But comparing the NFL to figure skating and ballet makes perfect sense.

Of course it was legal. Everyone knows it was legal. No one is arguing that. The point is that there is a lot of legal stuff you can do in the NFL that guys DON'T do because they respect each other. And cleaning guys out when they've relaxed and are out of the play is one of those things.

An example, as I stated before, would be cleaning out guys standing around a pile-up. It's not the mark of toughness, its a total cheap shot, and the league made a rule against it.

I'm not sure what you're leading up to here, but if you have something to say why not spit it out - I'm not the politically correct type, name-calling is perfectly acceptable to me. It would probably just help to demonstrate my point.

I don't think that being carted off on a stretcher automatically implicates a cheap shot either, where did I ever say that? THIS HIT BY SAPP WAS A CHEAP SHOT!! That is concise and to the point. No innuendos, no mystery. He's a friggin' thug on the field and he singled out a guy for elimination and he carried out his mission. That's not football - that's rollerball.
I'm sorry, but this is professional FB. You probably feel all the rules to protect the QB aren't enough, let the QB have flags hanging from there belts and just play flag FB for the QB
That's an idiotic remark. Thanks.
Butkus, Huff, Nitchke, Deacon Jones, and all the rest are LTAO at all these wuss rules. Now I'm not saying some things needed to be done, but you talk about jock types and non jock types, who is running FB now, Owners, think they ever played the game
Seems to me that Jerry Jones played a little football. Perhaps you think it would be a better game if there were more unconscious players lying about the field. I don't recall seeing Butkus hit a defenseless guy like this hit from Sapp - I recall seeing Butkus unload on someone who was involved in the action, sure, but I never saw him go running across the field looking to earhole a guy who was looking in the other direction. Same for Nitchske and the other guys - they had class - Sapp doesn't have any class at all.
I guess it boils down to how you perceive the game and yes, the bias of if it happens to your favorite team.
Green Bay is not my favorite team. Actually it happens to be Tampa Bay. Go figure.

You're the one who brought up this requirement that the only people who could legitimately comment on this incident are people who 'played the game'. Not all jocks are stupid. Only the ones who think like you. :D

In a year where everyone seems to be lambasting the refs for missing calls, maybe they missed this one?

Just one more thing.

This probably doesn't have to be added, but I LOVE hitting. It's my favorite thing about the game. I love seeing guys smash into each other full speed on kickoffs. I love seeing a QB get knocked out cleanly. I really love a good blindside take out when its important to the play. Think back to Ray Lewis cleaning out that Bronco on MNF on the 108 yard return. I don't even mind the occasional broken leg or ankle. But pulling this crap like Sapp did is not tough. Its not great contact. Its chicken shit bush league stuff.

And that's all Sherman was really saying, "that wasn't right." I don't think Sherman thinks he should be fined. That was just Sapp crossing that unwritten rule where you don't tee off on guys who have gone into "shutdown mode" on a play.

Bradshaw and Jimmy J were going off on Sapp after the game. Even Howie Long, who typically thinks D-lineman should be able to carry switchblades said, (paraphrase) "unless the tape shows clifton did something cheap to Sapp, this was a cheap shot."

Or don't we think Howie Long is tough anymore.

It's football. It was a legal block, someone fell asleep and got the snot knocked out of him. Too BAD!! I wish he didn't get hurt but he did. If sapp was laughting on the sidelines that sucks. If you fools think he is going to get suspended your nuts. Sherman should have saved his energy for rebuilding the Packs broken spirits on the cold flight home to the Frozen tundra. You got smoked!!!!!

Skinar,

I don't want to get into it with you over this, but we obviously disagree and that's fine.

But don't accuse me of things I didn't say or give them meaning that wasn't there. I never brought up you had to be a jock to have an opinion, just the opposite, I was answering a post that elluded to that.

The poke at a little fun of your statement about putting up with jock types was just that a little fun, I'm sorry you took it the wrong way, thats why I inserted the grinnin face to assure you no harm was intended.

All the other stuff that you think you need to dissect was just my feeling and perceptions of the game, they differ from yours fine, but no need to work yourself up into a lather, too bad we couldn't sit down over a beer and discuss it, so many things could be debated/argued but here too much typing needed and not enough time.

No hard feelings from me about you, just don't agree with yours and some others feelings on the play.
