Blackman -- you can probably answer this.

A friend of mine (men's health cover material) has a theory to knock out a 100 calorie protein shake right before going to bed to keep your metabolism firing all night.

What's your thoughts on that?

That's a good theory that I know a lot of people follow.

When you are dieting strictly you're body becomes accustomed to getting a dose of protein every 3-4 hours. Then when you go to sleep you deprive those muscles for an 8 hour stretch. I am sure his shake is casein, which is the slowest to digest. So if your metabolism has been conditioned to burn fat all day, why screech it to a hault overnight?

The key is the casein which will slowly digest and absorb into the muscle. Whey (which is fast moving and perfect for post workout) will be flushed out too quickly.

Hope this helps.

Blackman, I hear so much about carb restriction where people are going down to 10 a day. Seems like I get really weak when I go without. What is the best total to shoot for every day? Thanks!

I'm joining in on this fun......

My weigh in was 209....not really worried about the weight, want to drop my body fat to 10% or under....probably sitting around 15 to 16% right now......

Morris, I take Ultra Vitaman(Vitamin World), Green Tea Extract 315mg, Flaxeed Oil 1200mg, Omega 3 1000mg, I will start to supplement with protein shakes as well, to account for 2 snacks a day.

Don't smoke, but will have a chew like 2-3 times a day, a habit i need to boot.

I started Sunday with cutting all soda and iced teas out.....strictly orange juice in the morning (which will eventually go), water throughout the day and I'll allow myself some milk at night....

My real concern is the way i eat, very unhealthy lately......fast food, is buh bye now....i'll replace it with a water....fried foods, sweets (oh mommy) will have to be put to bed for awhile....summer is around the corner:142smilie

I'm dressing up like Rocky right now and about to attack the treadmill. Don't have a gym membership at the moment, will wait until the crowds die.....2 adjustable 40lb dumbells, pull-up bar and anywhere to do push-ups will get me by for the time being.........

I'm glad to hear things are on track for most of us. I've lost about 5-6lbs in week one. I started at about 193, would like to get down to around 175 or so. It's not necessarily just a weight thing for me. I've lost all my lean muscle since my competitive career ended and am now just soft. I'll need to transition to more muscle so the weight isn't the biggest concern.

My plan is to keep it simple. I typically don't eat breakfast but am forcing myself to now. That usually consists or oatmeal or cottage cheese and a banana. I'll eat a salad for lunch of non-processed turkey breast on half a whole wheat pita. For dinner it's either chicken breast or fish (salmon, tuna, or a white fish) with a side of veggies (spinach, broccoli, asparagus we like 'em all).
In between meals is small snacks of hard-boiled egg whites, a few almonds, fruit or veggies.

My wife and I would go through 1-2 bottles of wine a week with dinner and also would drink fri and sat nights. We've put ourselves on a 2 drink/week limit. Fri and Sat nights are for normal meals...gotta have some rewards in there or you'll get burnt out. For me it's about not having the temptations in the house. If it's here I will eventually eat it. I think the key (at least for me) to eating healthy begins with what I put in the grocery basket.

I'm working out 4-5 days a week, working on the core now. I'm a big believer in strengthening the body's core...it's fundamental for everything we do. When we get out of shape that needs to be hit first in addition to cardio.

I think timing is as important as the amount of carbs, but I'd say approximately 100 grams is low enough to see a difference, especially if you are working out/active. I'm with you that coming too low is sometimes counter productive as I'll become so weak and irratable that it's not worth the effort.

Right now I'm imiting my sugars and trying to make smart carb choices in my post workout meal (stuff like brown rice instead of a bagel/bread). Meal 3 of the 6 I have each day tends to be my largest as far as quantity and calories, so I have a half the day to continue burning off the intake.

Saint -- I'm with you about allowing yourself some rewards along the way, I can't wait for the pizza I've promised myself on Friday if I worked hard all week. Don't you miss the days of slugging out a big 400 IM set and eating about 5,000 calories without breaking a sweat? :mj07:

On the Atkins diet you are restricted to less than 20g of carbs /day for the first 2 weeks. That is pretty tough. 1 clementine (orange) has 13 carbs. My wife likes that diet, she has lost a lot of weight on it before.

I personally just watch the carbs I take in. No processed foods, read the labels for sugar content. Not a big fruit eater normally but will take down a banana with some "all natural" peanut butter, or a clementine with my oatmeal in the morning.

This time I am making sure I don't eat after 7pm. It has worked so far. As long as i am in bed by 9-9:30 I am fine, but last night stayed up to watch the first half of the Mavs/Pistons game and was starving by 10:30. Just went to bed though. I was fine.

Saint, welcome aboard. Good luck reaching your goals. It's a marathon guys not a sprint. Sounds like you are all on track. I appreciate the info from all of you.

keep the faith...

The Atkins Plan is not a sustainable healthy diet. You should NOT put yourself on it. It was taken completely out of context for commercial purposes.

It was set up for rapid weight loss for people going into surgery. It never had the intention of being a healthy lifestyle program. Simply rapid weight loss.

Starving your body of ALL carbs is not a good choice. A much better choice is cut down on your carbs and make sure they are coming from better sources such as whole grains.

I agree Dawgball, my wife follows the principles of it but not to a "t". All I do is restrict my carbs and the ones i do take in come from whole grains and fruits. I knew something was up with the Atkins diet when all their products vanished from grocery shelves. The weight does come off but it just can't be healthy.

I was discouraged to do everything right yesterday (eat, exercise, water, no eating after 7pm) and still put on a pound for some reason. The positive to come out of it was that I went from 33% body fat to 32 so maybe i am starting to gain lean muscle???

Have a post holiday party tonight at a great steakhouse. I am planning on a nice salad, some grilled veges and a delicious steak (which I will take half home for tomorrows lunch). Hopefully we aren't eating late.:SIB

A pretty good book on healthier living is "You on a Diet" by the Dr. Oz that is always on Oprah.

The main premise in the book is to focus on waist size instead of weight.

It's easy to temporarily lose weight by dropping water, fat, and muscle. But if you are dropping your waist size, you have to be doing something really right.

The pendulum weight loss will only result in your body being fatter.

I love it that everyone is talking about it here!

Let's not think we have to eat like birds, though. There is a vast middle ground between fast food and salads 4 times per day that is a place where we can train our brains to live.

Let's be real. Eating the equivalant of what a large beetle can digest in a day is not going to be sustainable. And we will eventually blame ourselves and sulk in a double bucket of pork rinds.

"Quitting" the habit of unhealthy eating permanently can be just as hard as putting a cigarette down for some people. Just a different vice.

Keep at it, fellas!

Just finished a Master's in biomechanics, a few nutritional science courses were part of the curriculum. Lot of this is fresh in my mind I guess.

I wouldn't be discouraged, especially if the bf dropped. Adding a lb of lean muscle would be a good thing as far as I am concerned.

Dr Feelgood, that is the reason I only weigh myself every 10 days or so. You're going to flucuate with water gain from day to day.

Tempted to go grab a burger and a few brews tonite. Not going to do it because iIhave a couple of parties coming up and I'll save it for then.

I don'y think I could eat a whole burger anyway. Learning to eat just enough and not to much that I am uncomfortable.

Eat less and move more!! GL guys!!

If I ever want to throw my dad off the freaking deep end, I just have to utter these words. He gets so sick of me telling him this!

At the same time, he has ballooned from 220 to 240 (he is claiming 230, but there's just no way).

I was told the same thing by a guy at work about adding the weight in lean muscle. Not sure if that's the case, but the beat goes on...

Went to an incredible steakhouse last night for a post holiday party. Everything was a la carte. I couldn't believe my stictoitivness....

I had a jumbo shrimp cocktail and 2 smaller cajun shrimp, a small caesar salad (dressing on the side barely used any---pushed the crutons aside), I orderd the 24 oz bone in ribeye (took half of it home) and had one of the ol lady's lamb legs, 2 small bites of creme brulee and NO BREAD....didn't have a before dinner drink or beer and drank water the whole meal. I must be freakin crazy or something cuz I reallly didn't miss anything. :00hour :scared

I may be on to somethng here. This aint so bad. Normally I would have ordered some fried appitizer, had at least 4-5 beers with the group, ate a whole dessert myself and half the wife's...

like my Father used to preach to me for years...

"everything in moderation kid...."

keep on keepin on guys!!!!
