I grew up when there were only 3 channels to watch and you looked FORWARD to the Saturday ABC fights ... they were the biggest thing to watch ... the 70s and 80s and early Tyson WERE boxing ... but the shady promoters and the popularity of wrestling and MMA in the 90s killed boxing ... I can count on one hand how many boxing events I watch a year and watch all of the MMA events that I can

The only....and I say only reason I am somewhat interested in MMA is that Tim Boetsch is from Sunbury, PA. About 10 minutes from my place. I'm shocked that he turned out to be such a good fighter because he sure wasn't an impressive athlete in high school. Nonetheless.... he is pretty bad ass now.
Kick I still think this MMA shit is a spinoff of the WWF. Sure they break bones and the blood erupts.... but anyone will get hurt for a truckload of Benjis wont they?
And Jack.... I think I stand with Sponge on the Hagler/Leonard fight. It had to be fixed.... Hagler would have destroyed Sugar Ray if money wasn't involved IMO. :0003

PaSprint......Tim just had a huge huge huge win in Japan. A massive upset. One of the biggest comeback wins in history of MMA.

with the stated interest in this newer form of combat why haven't one of the BIG 3 Networks[ABC..NBC..CBS.] exploited this money making bonanza in "Prime Time" television.

if 25 million in Brazil watch just one scheduled event does it stand to reason that 10 million in the USA televison market would watch on Thursday nightS at 8PM.

Surely a sport with this kind of appeal to Americans' would have the Big 3 networks trying to rake in millions of dollars in ads and promtional monies.

Certainly more popular than I could ever image..I can't phathom 10 million Americans tuning in every week on any particular night to watch this sport.

I can't image the BIG 3 leaving money laying on the floor either.

just food for thought.

That's what I can't understand either. I always hear its on network tv. It sounds like its cable channels like fox 2 or fuel.

I think they do PPV. I hear my son talking about Friday night fights that draw big crowds at the bars around here. Maybe Netwoks can't afford it

just went to ESPN Main Page..

here is where I found this sport.

More Sports.

listed just above Cricket

NOT A JAB...no pun intended.

just don't see in print nor aired media where this sport has made giant inroads to mainstream America..and without it its appeal and worth is just in a niche of a community who like to see men beat the hell out of each other.

Without MAINSTREAM AMERICA all sports struggle from the aired media ..especially tv..

One need only look at the NBA and its struggles to command a national audience.

UFC is biggest MMA organization.

Fox is paying the UFC 100 million dollars a year for 7 years

Two events have been shown on fox thus far, by end of the year number will reach 5 or 6 events.

And remember that is just the UFC and just in the USA. That should tell you how big MMA is now.

Jack.........PPV's are pretty much only in the UFC. PPV's happen about once a month. Sometimes two max. PPV events usually show 5-7 fights. The undercard can be seen for free on Facebook and on Free TV. For example the next PPV in the UFC is UFC 145 on April 21st. On that PPV you can watch the undercard on FX in USA and Rogers Sportsnet in Canada.

you can watch the undercard

And the undercards are usually pretty exciting.

For me, naming non top 10 ranked mma fighters is a lot easier than naming any boxers that are not considered elite. I think that is due in part to the success of The Ultimate Fighter reality show.

I only caught some of he Sugar Ray and Rambo's reality show back in the day. Contender. Have any of those fighters gone on to accomplish anything?

Where it is real F ing COLD
I'll watch MMA if it's on, I won't go out of my way to watch it.

It sucks that boxing has been down cause no MMA fight can match what the classic boxing fights had and never will.

If boxing were to be relevant again it would slow MMA down but honestly I couldn't name more than 5 boxers now.

let's quit pussyfooting around.....nobody in MMA would stand a chance against a Roman gladiator equipped with sword or spear.......this is ridiculous shit.....if you want to get serious take the gloves off and fight to the death with no rules

I agree with statman02......fighting to the death would be great.

Although the talent would dilute rather quickly. And the insurance costs would be a tad high. But at least nobody would complain about a bad judges decision.

Let's do this:bigun:

That would be network TV in my mind. Fox sports is as big as it gets.

Not sure where he got that. I think im labeled on this site :mj07: One of the beautiful things about betting Leonard was that u knew he was coming in with a great game plan. Some of these MMA fighters come in brain dead when a win wouldn't be all that hard.

HELL
Im not a gonna go back and forth to see who wrote what nor read through all of this thread, so here goes nothing....

1. Hagler won that fight. Um, to beat the CHAMP you have to beat the CHAMP. Read Four Kings, excellent read and book.

2. Boxing is dead because there is no American Heavyweight Champion.

3. Boxing is dead because they dont make marquee fights when its on a platter, ie Mayweather vs Pacman. Total BS, should be fighting at least twice or trilogy if they split.

4. Boxing is dead because they are not in the public eye enough or fight enough, when Tyson was killing everyone he fought like 3-4 times per year so who didnt tune in to see him win in a round or two.

5. Boxing is dead because there is another option now called MMA that is becoming or has become mainstream more and more.

I lived to watch boxing back in the day, screw around a little myself and yes its painful to see this sport fade away.

Ok, back underneath my rock, carry on....
