GAME NOTES: The 17th-ranked LSU Tigers and the surging Arkansas Razorbacks will collide in Baton Rouge on Saturday night.

Through seven games, Arkansas was 3-4 overall, and fans were wondering aloud if Bobby Petrino was the right head coach for the program. Those questions have seemingly disappeared thanks to a current four-game win streak, which includes last weekend's 42-21 decision over Mississippi State. If the Razorbacks are able to win this weekend, they will even their SEC mark at 4-4.

As for LSU, it has suffered losses in two of the last three outings after winning seven of eight to open the campaign. The Tigers fell to Ole Miss on the road last weekend by a 25-23 final, and all three losses have come by 10 or fewer points. The other two setbacks occurred against Alabama and Florida, the two teams that will meet in the SEC Championship Game.

LSU owns a 33-19-2 advantage in the all-time series with Arkansas, but the Razorbacks posted a thrilling 31-30 victory in last season's meeting.

Arkansas is an explosive offensive team that is averaging 38.0 ppg and 445.2 total ypg. While tailback Michael Smith has been lost for the season with a hamstring injury, Broderick Green (10 TDs) and others are capable of pick up the slack.

The strength of the Razorback offense is the passing attack, led by Michigan transfer Ryan Mallett at the quarterback position. Deserving of consideration for SEC Player of the Year honors, Mallett has completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 3,195 yards and 28 touchdowns with six interceptions. He has Greg Childs on the outside, who has made 40 catches for 738 yards and seven touchdowns.

Opponents are posting 25.1 ppg and 408.7 total ypg against an Arkansas team that has been nothing more than mediocre defensively this season. The Razorbacks have clearly struggled against the pass, as they have allowed opposing quarterbacks to average 13.9 yards per completion with 19 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

Mallett was sensational against Mississippi State last week, as the sophomore became the first Razorback in the 100-plus year history of football to throw for over 3,000 yards in a single season. He tied his own school record with five passing scores in that tilt, two of which went to freshman Cobi Hamilton. Mallett finished 18-of-34 for 313 yards.

"There's still time to do a little more and help the team out," said Mallett after the contest, refusing to get too caught up in his numbers.

Arkansas was tremendous against the pass for a change against Mississippi State, limiting the Bulldogs to 49 yards through the air. The Razorbacks did, however, yield 327 rushing yards on 55 attempts, an average of 5.9 yards per carry with three touchdowns. That shaky showing was masked by Mallett's play.

"It certainly wasnt easy," said Petrino of the win. "We really had to fight. I don't think it was the best game we've played this year, but we worked hard and did a good job making adjustments and getting some key stops on defense."

Moving on to LSU, it is averaging 24.8 ppg and 308.2 total ypg, modest numbers for an offense that hasn't reached its full potential. Sure, it can be argued that the losses of tailbacks Charles Scott, Keiland Williams and Richard Murphy to season-ending injuries have hurt the offense, but the overall play has been inconsistent even when Scott, the top runner, was active.

Quarterback Jordan Jefferson is still young, and while he hasn't made a ton of bad decisions this season (five interceptions), his 1,785 passing yards in 10 starts and 14 touchdowns suggests that big plays through the air have been few and far between. There is a star wideout in the fold, as Brandon LaFell has made 48 catches for 635 yards and nine touchdowns.

Opponents are scoring only 14.7 ppg against LSU, which is once again a tremendous defensive team. The Tigers are limiting opponents to 3.5 yards per rushing attempt, and they have one more interceptions (12) than touchdown passes allowed (11).

LSU totaled a mere 290 yards of total offense against Ole Miss last time out, including 40 rushing yards on 27 attempts. Jefferson threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns, and Terrance Toliver paced the Tigers with five catches for 107 yards. Unfortunately, the offense simply didn't score enough points to avoid defeat.

"He threw the ball well," said Toliver of Jefferson. "The Ole Miss defense was getting in the backfield a lot, and a lot of times he had to throw out of desperation."

The LSU defense yielded 426 total yards to Ole Miss, including 233 yards through the air. The Tigers didn't come up with a single takeaway and failed to register any sacks as well. The lack of impact plays certainly contributed to the two-point defeat.

"I felt like the team played awfully hard," said coach Les Miles after the tough loss. "I felt like our defense played better in the second half than in the first."

LSU is tough to beat at home under the lights, so give a narrow edge to the Tigers. Still, don't expect Mallett to make things easy.

Predicted Outcome: LSU 30, Arkansas 27

GAME NOTES: With a share of their fourth straight Sun Belt Conference title already secure, the Troy Trojans will try to finish perfect in league play when they take on the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns this Saturday evening at Cajun Field.

The Trojans have already claimed a piece of the Sun Belt title and now the team will try to capture its first 8-0 showing in league play in school history. A win will also give the Trojans their first nine-win campaign since joining the Football Bowl Subdivision. After seeing their seven-game win streak come to an end against Arkansas, the Trojans bounced back with a convincing, 47-21 victory over Florida Atlantic last weekend.

The Cajuns head into this matchup fresh off a 21-17 victory over their rival, the UL-Monroe Warhawks. It was the second win in the last three games for ULL, which is now 4-1 at home this year, and 4-3 in conference play.

The Cajuns hold a slim 7-5 edge over Troy in the all-time series, but the Trojans have won five of the last six meetings, including three in a row.

Troy did everything right in its recent victory over Florida Atlantic, as the team racked up an eye-popping 652 total yards. Eight different players carried the ball at least one time for Troy, which finished the game with 168 rushing yards on 5.4 yards per attempt. On top of the solid production from the ground game, Levi Brown was also impressive under center, as the quarterback threw for 477 yards and three touchdowns. Jerrel Jernigan did not catch a touchdown pass, but the receiver did haul in six receptions for 147 yards. Brown has been solid throughout the entire season, completing 64.7 percent of his throws. The signal caller heads into this weekend with 3,575 yards and 19 scores against eight interceptions. The success of Brown has made it easier on the ground game, which is churning out 140.9 ypg on the year. DuJuan Harris and Shawn Southward have turned into a dangerous dup out of the backfield, as the two backs have combined for 845 yards and 16 touchdowns. The balanced attack for Troy has led to an impressive 31.7 ppg.

Defensively the Trojans were not at their best on Saturday, but the unit did more than enough to keep Troy from losing at home. The Trojans allowed just 348 total yards and that led to only 21 points. The defense did have some trouble against the pass, as FAU threw for 206 yards in the contest. If there is an area of concern for this unit, it has come against the pass, as the team is being torched for 265.3 ypg through the air and out of the 40 touchdowns permitted by this unit, 24 have come via the pass. Fortunately the unit has be able to force 18 turnovers thus far, and has also put solid pressure on opposing quarterbacks, racking up 29 sacks on the year. Brandon Lang and Cameron Sheffield have formed into a fantastic tandem on the front line, as Lang comes into this weekend with 10.5 TFLs and 7.5 sacks, while Sheffield has racked up 10.0 TFLs and 6.5 sacks.

The Cajuns might have been victorious this past weekend, but the team left plenty to be desired offensively, as ULL totaled just 314 yards, en route to a 21-point performance. The ground game did very little in the win, as the team rumbled for 62 yards on 1.6 yards per attempt. However, with that said, all three touchdowns for the Cajuns came on the ground. However, those scores were setup by the play of Chris Masson, who finished the game with 252 yards on 16- of-27 efficiency. Masson, however, has been inconsistent throughout most of the season and comes into this matchup with just 2,219 yards and nine scores against seven interceptions. As for the rushing attack, the team does not possess a top of the line option, as the leading rusher is Udrea Sails with 432 yards, who has been sidelined for the last five games, proving even further that there is a lack of production in the backfield.

The reason the Cajuns are coming into this contest with six victories instead of five is because of the defense, as the unit held UL-Monroe to just 303 total yards, including just 91 yards through the air. It was a shocking performance for this squad, which has been anything but consistent this year. Heading into this weekend the Cajuns are surrendering 216.0 ypg through the air, but have really been gashed by the run, surrendering 178.5 ypg on the ground. Things are not all bad for ULL however, as the team has forced 24 turnovers on the year, including 15 interceptions. Another bright spot for this defense has been the play of Antwyn Zanders, who is currently leading the team with 98 tackles and 9.5 TFLs.

The Cajuns have played well at home this year, but they simply do not have the offensive capabilities to keep up with a Troy team that has slowly built a dynasty in the Sun Belt Conference.

Predicted Outcome: Troy 38, UL-Lafayette 20

Georgia (6-5) at (7) Georgia Tech (10-1)

Georgia (6-5) at (7) Georgia Tech (10-1)

Georgia (6-5) at (7) Georgia Tech (10-1)

Saturday, November 28th, 8:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: The Georgia Bulldogs head to Atlanta this weekend for their annual rivalry game against the seventh-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Mark Richt's Bulldogs have had their ups and downs this season, posting a 6-5 overall record and a meager 4-4 ledger in SEC play. Georgia was able to build a little momentum in the month of November with back-to-back wins over Tennessee Tech (38-0) and Auburn (31-24), but that was halted last weekend with a home loss to Kentucky (34-27).

Still, Richt knows that this is a game that can help his team close out on a strong note.

"It is Georgia-Georgia Tech week. It's a big week for everybody in the state. We are playing a team that has just been outstanding, 10-1, won their division and playing for the ACC title, running up and down the field, just really playing fantastic right now. It's the in-state rival. It's the next ballgame. It's Georgia Tech, so it's a game we're all going to be excited about coaching and playing in, and I'm sure our fans will be excited about watching it too."

Paul Johnson's Yellow Jackets have cruised through the majority of the season, winning 10 of their 11 matchups. Tech comes into this game with an eight-game win streak in tow, clinching a spot in the ACC title game against Clemson with a 49-10 rout of Duke on November 14th. The Yellow Jackets have had an extra week to prepare for the Bulldogs, as they sat idle last weekend.

This is the 102nd meeting in this longstanding rivalry that dates back to 1893. Georgia has won seven of the eight games under Richt, to take a 59-37-5 series advantage. However, last year the Yellow Jackets won a shootout in Athens, 45-42.

The Bulldogs have been just average on the offensive side of the football this year and that is a big reason for the 6-5 overall record. Georgia is putting up a mediocre 357.0 yards of total offense, but has been slightly balanced, with 140.5 yards coming on the ground and 216.5 through the air.

Senior quarterback Joe Cox has played to mixed reviews, completing 56.1 percent of his passes, for 2,350 yards, with 21 TDs and 14 INTs. it certainly won't help in this game that standout WR A.J. Green (47 receptions, for 751 yards, six TDs) may not be able to go due to a shoulder injury.

The ground game has had its share of problems and lacks a real workhorse in the backfield. The stable of backs is young, as Georgia will need sophomores Caleb King (4.6 ypc, three TDs) and Richard Samuel (4.5 ypc, two TDs) to make something happen in this game.

The numbers against the run and the pass have been good for Georgia's defense, resulting in just 327.4 yards of total offense for the opposition, but foes are still putting up 26.6 ppg and that number has been simply too high this year.

Junior linebacker Rennie Curran has done everything he can this season, leading the team in tackles with 107 stops. The next closest player is junior safety Reshad Jones at 61 tackles. Jones (two INTs) and sophomore cornerback Brandon Boykin (46 tackles, three INTs) have been the top players in the secondary. The defensive line is headlined by sophomore end Justin Houston, who paces the team in TFLs (13) and sacks (7).

There are no secrets with Georgia Tech's offense. The Yellow Jackets set up to run the ball on just about every down and the result is an eye-popping 314.1 yards rushing per game, good for second in the nation.

It starts with the rushing combo of All-ACC tailback Jonathan Dwyer and quarterback Josh Nesbitt. Dwyer was the ACC Player of the Year a season ago and after a slow start this season, has come on strong down the stretch. He is averaging 109.4 yards per game, netting 6.6 yards per carry. Dwyer has amassed 1,203 yards on the season and is responsible for 11 of the team's amazing 41 rushing scores. Nesbitt has been every bit as good on the ground, churning out 847 yards and a team-best 16 TDs.

The passing game is an afterthought in Atlanta (135.5 ypg), but that doesn't mean the team lacks the talent to get the ball down the field. On the contrary, the team possesses one of the ACC's top wideouts in Demaryius Thomas, who leads the team in receptions (39), receiving yards (950) and TD catches (6).

The Tech defense has been good enough this year, considering the offense uses up over 34 minutes per game, keeping the Yellow Jacket defenders fresh throughout. The result is a unit that has limited the opposition to just 346.5 yards of total offense, while recording 22 sacks and forcing 21 turnovers. The key contributor to the pass rush is All-American candidate Derrick Morgan. The 6-4, 275-pound junior has been unstoppable, recording 17.0 TFLs and an impressive 12.5 sacks. Linebacker Brad Jefferson (team-high 76 tackles, two forced fumbles) and Sedric Griffin (60 tackles) are the top performers in the middle of the field, while All-American candidate Morgan Burnett (57 tackles, four INTs, one fumble recovery) highlights the play in the secondary.

Paul Johnson knows that Georgia represents a real challenge.

"I'm sure they're going to come in here and play one of their best games. I would expect nothing less. We're going to try and get ready to play one of our best [games]. They've got a lot to play for and so do we. It ought to be a good game."

Johnson has been rewarded with a new contract extension as Georgia Tech has a BCS bowl bid in sight. Expect not much to change for the Yellow Jackets, who should literally run their win total to 11 games here.

Predicted Outcome: Georgia Tech 31, Georgia 21

Rice (2-9) at (25) Houston (9-2)

Rice (2-9) at (25) Houston (9-2)

Rice (2-9) at (25) Houston (9-2)

Saturday, November 28th, 8:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: The 25th-ranked Houston Cougars will try to wrap up their spot in the Conference USA championship game this weekend, as they host the Rice Owls at Robertson Stadium.

Everything went right for the Cougars last weekend, as they trounced Memphis, 55-14, and SMU lost to give Houston the edge in the West Division standings.

"I thought we came out and had some intensity," said coach Kevin Sumlin. "I don't know that a coach is ever completely satisfied with a game, but I thought that our guys responded well coming off of last week."

The Cougars, who had played three straight games decided by a touchdown or less, were coming off a 37-32 setback against UCF that put a damper on their C-USA title hopes. However, Houston's win, coupled with SMU's loss, put the Cougars in position to clinch the West Division title with a victory this weekend. Both SMU and Houston stand at 5-2 within the conference, but the Cougars own the tie-breaker thanks to their win over the Mustangs earlier in the season.

Standing in their way is a Rice club that has shown some life down the stretch. After opening the season with nine straight losses, including eight by double figures, the Owls have won two straight games. Most recently, Rice held off Texas-El Paso for a 30-29 victory last weekend.

"For two weeks in a row, we've sure started slow but we've ended well," said head coach David Bailiff. "It's been a point of emphasis getting a fast start. These last couple of weeks we'll have to keep emphasizing it as long as we keep winning football games."

Rice and Houston are crosstown rivals facing each other for the 36th time on the gridiron. The Cougars lead the head-to-head series, 25-10, although the Owls denied Houston a spot in the 2008 C-USA championship game with a 56-42 win the two team's regular season finale.

Charles Ross rushed for three short touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, leading the Owls past UTEP last weekend. Rice gained 172 of its mere 227 total yards on the ground and benefited from several turnovers created by its defense.

While Ross got the headlines with his scores, it was Tyler Smith that did most of the damage, rushing for 127 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.

"The way that Tyler Smith took that game over tonight for us running the football, we had moments offensively where we were having trouble getting any type of rhythm and tempo but they just kept trying on offense defense and special teams, and we finally just outlasted them at the end," said coach Bailiff.

It was an encouraging effort by both Ross and Smith and the Owls' ground attack, which is still only averaging a measly 97.1 ypg on the season.

With the success on the ground versus UTEP, quarterback Nick Fanuzzi wasn't needed much, throwing for just 55 yards and an interception on 8-of-17 pass attempts. Fanuzzi has had much better games and for the season he has completed 60.8 percent of his pass attempts with eight scores and six picks.

Toren Dixon is the team's main threat through the air, as he tops the club in catches (57), receiving yards (631) and touchdowns (six).

The Owls defense has had major issues this season and that is no more evident than in the whopping 40.4 ppg they are allowing. The group is being abused on the ground (187.8 ypg) and through the air (256.2 ypg) and has typically offered little resistance.

Last weekend, Rice gave up 395 total yards, including 244 passing, but compensated by forcing an eye-popping six turnovers. Of those mishaps, five were fumbles and two of them came late in the game that helped seal the victory.

"Our players never quit, and I think we made more plays throughout the game than they did, and with the six takeaways, our defense came alive tonight," said Bailiff.

Travis Bradshaw forced two crucial fumbles, to go with 13 stops, while Cheta Ozougwu had a fumble recovery and two sacks. Bradshaw has been a tackling machine this year, with 110 to his credit, and he also has four forced fumbles on his resume.

Case Keenum threw for 405 yards and five touchdowns in less than three full quarters, as the Cougars trounced Memphis over the weekend. With the performance, Keenum established a new school record for touchdowns passes with 94, breaking David Klingler's mark of 91.

"It's definitely an honor with the quarterbacks who've played here before," said Keenum about his place in Houston history. It's an honor any time I get mentioned with those guys from the past. They've done great things in blazing the trails for us. Just to follow in their footsteps is pretty cool."

Keenum has been off the chart good this season, as he has completed 70.0 percent of his pass attempts for 4,599 yards, with 36 touchdowns and only six picks. He is obviously a big reason why the Cougars have been able to pump out an incredible 574.1 total ypg.

The effort last weekend came despite the absence of James Cleveland, the team's leading wideout with 82 catches for 941 yards and 11 scores. Cleveland is listed as questionable with a leg injury, but Houston has plenty of other options. Tyron Carrier and Patrick Edwards both have over 70 catches and 800 receiving yards and they should have a field day against the Owls' soft defense.

Charles Sims got the start in the backfield last weekend and he toted 15 times for 90 yards and two scores. The run is an afterthought in this offense, but Sims has proven effective with 533 yards on a 5.5 yard per carry average.

With the offense producing at a record pace, Houston's defense has had to spend way too much time on the field and that has resulted in poor numbers for the unit. The Cougars are giving up 216.0 ypg on the ground and 235.4 ypg through the air and this group's inability to stop teams has come back to haunt them.

In last weekend's game, the Cougars built a big lead early on and that took the pressure off the defense. The unit did limit Memphis to just 344 total yards, but 243 of them come on the ground and that is simply too much.

Marcus McGraw and C.J. Cavness have done their part for this defense and for the season they have combined for 221 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

Houston is a heavy favorite here and Keenum should have no trouble throwing all over Rice and leading the Cougars to the C-USA title game.

Predicted Outcome: Houston 44, Rice 17
