GAME NOTES: With one more chance to grab a victory this season coming this Saturday afternoon, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will try to defeat the Florida Atlantic Owls in a Sun Belt Conference tussle at Lockhart Stadium.
Not only is Western Kentucky winless on the season, but the team currently holds the nation's longest losing streak at 18 games. The last time the Hilltoppers were in action the team came so close to posting a victory, but fell short against UL-Monroe, 21-18. The loss dropped WKU to 0-5 on the road this season, and 0-6 in conference play.
As for the Owls, they are coming off an embarrassing, 47-21 setback to Troy. It was the third loss in the last four games for FAU, which is now just 3-3 in conference action. The Owls have endured some struggles at home this season, losing three of their four matchups at Lockhart stadium, but all three setbacks have come by a combined 11 points.
These two schools met for the first time last season, and the Owls grabbed a slim, 24-20 victory over the Hilltoppers in Kentucky.
The Hilltoppers actually put forth a respectable effort offensively against UL-Monroe, as the team racked up 383 total yards. However, that only led to 18 points, as Western Kentucky suffered, yet another loss. Bobby Rainey paced the team on the ground with 134 yards on 8.4 yards per attempt. Quarterback Kawaun Jakes added 46 rushing yards, while Brandon Smith scored the team's lone touchdown. Jakes was not very effective with his arm in the loss, as the quarterback completed just 50.0 percent of his throws for 188 yards. Jakes' performance is not surprising in the least bit, as the quarterback has struggled throughout most of the season and comes into this finale with just 1,249 yards and eight scores against seven interceptions. Fortunately the ground game has been a bit more consistent, as the team is rumbling for 177.0 ypg, with Rainey pacing the squad with 725 yards. However, after all is said and done the Hilltoppers are only producing 20.2 ppg, and that is not going to win many games.
Sure the Hilltoppers only surrendered 21 points against UL-Monroe, but the defense was abused throughout the contest and by the final whistle Western Kentucky had allowed 441 total yards, including 290 rushing yards on 7.1 yards per attempt. Western Kentucky's inability to stop the run has been the Achilles heel for this unit since day one, as the squad is being pulverized for 267.6 ypg on the ground, and out of the 56 touchdowns allowed by this defense, 33 have come via the run. However, the team's troubles with the run are not all that plague this unit, as the defense for WKU heads into this weekend allowing a whopping 506.5 total ypg, and that has led to 42.2 ppg. Thomas Majors is currently leading the team with 88 tackles on the year, after racking up nine against UL-Monroe.
The Owls did not do much of anything against Troy this past weekend, as the team totaled a mediocre 348 yards and that led to just 21 points. The ground game was paced by Alfred Morris, who rushed for 137 yards and one touchdown. Jeff VanCamp, who took over for the injured Rusty Smith, completed 22-of-33 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown, but he was also sacked five times. VanCamp has been a pleasant surprise since stepping in for Smith, as the signal caller comes into this contest with 886 yards and seven scores against just two interceptions. On top of VanCamp's performance there is Morris, who has quietly rushed for over 1,000 yards and currently sits with 1,112 yards and nine scores on the year. The surprising balance for this offensive attack has led to a healthy 27.2 ppg.
Offensively the Owls had some issues on Saturday, but defensively Florida Atlantic was completely dismantled by Troy, as the Trojans pulverized FAU for 651 total yards, including 483 yards and three touchdowns through the air. On top of that, the defense also was gashed for 168 rushing yards and three more touchdowns. While the team has not played well against the pass all year, stopping the run has been the biggest issue for this unit, as opponents are punishing Florida Atlantic for 224.7 ypg on the ground and out of the 46 touchdowns permitted by this defense, 32 have come via the run. Marcus Bartels is leading the team with 84 tackles on the year and is coming off an impressive showing against Troy where he collected 12 tackles to go along with one forced fumble and one interception.
The Owls had a rough performance against Troy, but expect Florida Atlantic to bounce back in a big way this weekend. The Hilltoppers should put up a fight, but ultimately the team will have to wait till next season to snap its losing streak.
Predicted Outcome: Florida Atlantic 45, Western Kentucky 28
