The execution of a 67-year-old man who was convicted of killing four men more than three decades ago is set to proceed on Wednesday evening after the U.S. Supreme Court denied a last-day appeal to halt the lethal injection.

Lester Bower Jr. would be the oldest prisoner executed in the most active death penalty state since the punishment was reinstated in 1982.

He was convicted of October 1983 fatal shootings of four men at an airplane hangar on a ranch near Sherman, about 60 miles north of Dallas. Prosecutors say he killed the four after stealing an airplane that he had been trying to buy from one of his victims.

"I do have remorse," Bower, who has maintained his innocence, told The Associated Press two weeks ago from death row. "I'm remorseful for putting my family and my wife and my friends through this.

"If this is going to bring some closure to them (the victim's family), then good. But if they think by this they're executing the person that killed their loved one, then that's going to come up a little bit short."

If the execution goes ahead, Bower would be the eighth inmate given a lethal dose of pentobarbital this year in Texas, which carries out capital punishment more than any other state.

His attorneys told the high court that jurors didn't have the opportunity in their punishment deliberations to fully consider that Bower had no previous criminal record. Attorneys also contended that the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals used an incorrect legal standard when it denied an appeal for Bower a decade ago.

Stephen Hoffman, an assistant Texas attorney general, responded that 30 years of litigation was enough and justice already had been delayed "for the four families of the men that Bower slaughtered in cold blood."

if you really think the cops are going to stand by while some yingyang chops up a police dog, then god bless you living in your fantasy world...

Yet another reason not to employ dogs by police. It's dangerous and can infuse emotion into the situation. Dogs are fragile and shouldn't be put in harms way like this. Especially if cops protect them with such force.

I personally could NEVER kill another human unless I was sure someone was in imminent and realistic danger of being critically harmed or killed themselves. AND if all other options were doomed to fail.

I guess it's good we have people in law enforcement that are more aggressive and willing to kill than I am. I couldn't do it.

nice straw man....it was a police dog...it was a police stand-off......not some linebacker slanmming a yorkie into a wall...
good grief...

If a human is not in imminent danger, I couldn't pull the trigger against another man. It amazes me that anyone could. The sanctity of life>everything else.

To be clear though, I am not suggesting discipline or anything. I just find it an interesting conundrum.

\

they send the dog to keep the cops safer

if dog goes down its better than human life lost

but the cops are too emotional with the dogs like you say

they treat the dog like they defend woman cops

hit a woman cop while being arrested and see what happens to you when
you get to the jail house elevators

Sorry, someone dropped the cue cards and I got confused. :toast::toast:
I only bother arguing with people I like and respect. :0008

it`s so f`ing refereshing when you can disagree with someone in here(even on a subject that both have strong feelings about) and know that they`re "nifty"(hello !!) and savvy enough to not take a disagreement(and even some mild snark) and turn it into a lifetime grudge....

we are all "embiggened"(hello, hello !!) by your presence on this board....:0074

"Score one for the good guys", but you're not celebrating...... nooooo........ not at all. So full of shit. Your torso is probably still rippling in waves after jumping up and down when you saw it.

My only thought on the rest of it is the poor use of a K-9. The car was surrounded. Maintain distance let him exit the car, then taze or pepper spray should have done the trick.

Whatever though, still means extra cake fur hedge tonight

If only we could have the folks that have all the answers just join the Police Academy and show everyone how easy it is to make split second decisions and have everything work out perfect each time there's a situation.....So, who's signing up......
