I don't wear a hat regularly. I agree with this up to a certain extent. The place has to be nice, I'll go ahead and wear a hat to any chain restaurant. Mortons, Chart House, etc. and a few exceptions on the chains (I will not wear a hat at these). Sometimes my wife gets upset about this and I just reply "this place sucks - who cares" to her.

However, if we're at a nice restaurant I'll go ahead and put a nice shirt on, comb my hair and even wear slacks. I guess it depends largely on what I think of the place.

I had a general manager at a chain restaurant tell me to take my hat off once, it was after I got my food. I just replied "why, nothing special here" and he didn't say anything else to me.
