On the course!
the Premier league on NBC saw huge jumps in ratings this year. pretty solid for a league that has 0 games in any prime time US time zone. some games start as early as 5am on the west coast and they still have dozens of dedicated pubs for viewing parties each weekend.

good call.

Is soccer 'catching on'? Sure it is. Very slowly. It hasn't 'been here' for 30 years, like BBC said. 30 years ago, if you told someone you played soccer, they likely would have asked you what country you were from.

And you tell me what other sport is on at 5am to even watch? I might even watch soccer if it's the only game in town!

I don't understand the view that for soccer to "catch on" it has to be in the top 4. It will never be in the top 4 except for World Cup. Still, it has a decent following. Nothing wrong with that at all. :shrug:The rules can be maddening, but that's life. World Cup is better than the Olympics, but people never criticize the olympics for not catching on. There are never articles wondering why we only care about Michael Phelps every 4 years.

Actually, I gave him a great retort. After the WC is over, you won't see these web sites "leading with" soccer. I don't care about the one bar out of a thousand that shows soccer, either. The fact that BBC might talk about it at his cookouts isn't too important in the scheme of how America sees it, either. And, if social media advertisers are smart enough to go with the flavor of the day, who could blame them? Will they be there in two weeks? Will the BBQ be talking about it? Will BWW have their TVs tuned into soccer after the WC? Nope. And for the simple fact being.......America, by and large, doesn't give a shit about this fucking sport, no matter if YOU'RE a soccer mom, or not, Joker.

Are any of these sites currently leading with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks?

I strongly doubt it. But, I would venture to guess that football, is 'news' on their sites at about a 500:1 clip over soccer. You might have to ask yourself why that is......I don't.

Soccer flopping is far worse than any other foul/injury faking in any sport. There is no comparison.

I never watch soccer until the World Cup, and I would estimate I have watched at the least 2/3rds of all he matches. I think they are intriguing, entertaining, and maddening. I really like the underdog aspect of many of the games, and I like the competition between countries. It's very enjoyable.

As mentioned already, until the elite athletes in the USA start playing soccer, it will never be popular. If the elite athletes (if even 5% of the elite athletes) played soccer, the USA would never lose. Think of a 7 feet tall goalie with the athleticism of Dwight Howard, 6'8 forwards like Lebron, attackers like Deion Sanders, midfielders like Lawrence Taylor, and etc other possibilities. Unstoppable every single game. It would be the elite athletes playing the game instead of the country clubbers.

It's on espn, fox and nbc. Go to their websites right now and see what they're leading with. It's on your sports ticker. It's at the globe pub on Irving park road at 7 am every Saturday August through May. Its 250 local chapters of the American outlaws. It's the conversation at my neighborhood BBQs It's at dicks sports. It dominates twitter and it's where any social media advertising budget is being focused.

Yea if the NFL or College football was on it would dominate nothing. NOTHING
The flopping is insane. Lets roll around on the ground for 15 seconds as if our leg is broke and then jump up and go play like nothing happened. Ridiculous. I will watch the Cup but once its over. Naa. Boring

A sport played by men in shorts............USA USA USA........America does not give a flying fuck, except every 4 years. Get over it , NFL and NCAA football lasts for 4-5 months each year. This shit lasts for a few weeks every 4years. Whoohoo who gives a fuck? A field goal kicker makes a 50 yard field goal in the same width as a goal net..... Enjoy and you can even use your head..........OMG This is exciting.....:00hour:00hour:00hour

If there was a change to the Champions League to where the top teams in Americas could compete it would help the MLS in quality/interest. However, it is a European club championship so it will not happen.

Great timing to have this thread

Tomorrow is going to be the most watched soccer game in American history. The viewing party in Chicago has been moved to soldier field because grant park just isn't big enough.....at 3:00 pm ....... On a Tuesday.

In the same week that Kaka has decided to come from AC Milan to wear the purple of Orlando City FC, the 24th team in Major League Soccer

Two months after ESPN and Fox purchased the US rights for the next seven years

The day before the month that the biggest clubs in the world - Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Roma, Olympiakos and Tottenham Hotspur do a preseason tour of the United States in order to reach out to this market.

So basically, everyone who's job it is to determine whether or not there's an appetite for Soccerball in the States is putting their money on the fact that there is. But you guys "feel" that's its never going to be big here. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. But it should be informed.

Cheers!

You might have to ask yourself who stated soccer was going to eventually be as big as the NFL....I don't, because I know no one actually did.

Feel free to throw some other shit against the wall though since losing an argument about soccer is so disheartening for you.

That's nice. How about they do it 8 times in the span of four months? Then we'll know soccer has arrived.

since you like comparisons, heres another.

a typical midfielder covers more distance in a single game than most running backs will rush for in their entire career.

even the referee in soccer will travel more distance in a game than most running backs will ever rush for in their whole career.

That's pretty cool......it must mean my 6 year old covers as much ground in one of his games as Walter Payton did in a season since the kids play on a smaller field.

Three things need to change in this sport badly....

1. The player who receives a red card should be kicked out of the game, but a team shouldn't have to play one man down for the rest of the game. That's a ridiculous rule.

2. Offsides when the ball is in the quarter half of the opposing team's side. They need a line on each side of the field at the quarter point so there is no offsides called when the ball is in that area. Why get called for an offsides when the ball is 15 feet away from you and you're near the goal? That's not cherry picking. It be like calling offsides in the NBA when a player has the ball at the free throw line and throws a lob to a teammate for a dunk. Stupid rule....

3. They need a clock that stops during injuries and timeouts. The indiscriminate stoppage time is also ridiculous. And the ref is in charge of making sure that time is accurate? In the US vs Port game the announcers said there was 4 minutes of stoppage time. Then said, they just added another minute. And of course Portugal scores in that last minute. Stop the clock during the game and the problem of indiscriminate time is solved.
