and oh ya, I don't know anything about this stuff :0074

Just sayin'

You said they stink. They seem to be doing something right, that's all.

I didn't say you don't know what you're doing.

because they advertise to consumers like crazy on TV and 95% of the masses {as you can see here} think this is the only or best option

and they have a terrible reputation of after you order one of their products with your credit card to continue shipping you other products that you did not order or want....then their customer service is terrible and hard to get in touch because they are banking you don't notice or just don't return it

I am just trying to help and good luck with your play but I am on the other side:mj07:

I'm just trying to help too.

We are BIG users of the public library. Kid's books, my books, and DVDs for both kids and the parents. One of my favorites is when they get the HBO show seasons in.

I'll check out those links. Thanks, Andy.

WHAT is all this junk...it's like wading through the Classifieds to get to the Sports section...wow.

Although I do have to say that I have been employing Overdrive through my library for my new nook (thanks to Dunclock's recommendation when he was at our house), and it is the best. The best, Jerry, the best.

Anyway...I have read three books this year, but I think I will only disclose two as the third one is rather embarrassing lol. I will be rating my books on the basis of a five star scale...

**"Diaper Free" by Ingrid Bauer. OK I realize this is probably not the most interesting topic to everyone on this board, but it is a book about never using diapers on infants. The most interesting part was just the cultural stigmas that are implanted in our culture.

*"The Appeal" by John Grisham. Boring and predictable...haven't read anything by him for awhile, but really had a hard time finishing this.

Going to download "The Road" (from my library) by Cormac McCarthy in the morning.

Finished

Do More Faster by Feld/Cohen

For me: 5 out of 5 due to how perfectly it fits what I am doing professionally at this very time.

For everyone else it would probably be incredibly boring.

Presentation Zen by Reynolds

4 out of 5

Good book on a better philosophy behind building presentations in front of groups.

Started last night

First of all, so many thanks to WH Nuts for the 2010 Reading Log recap..............AWESOME job man !! Thanks for all your hard work !!

Second......message to dunclock...............I see you are reading the Steig Larsson trilogy...............let me know what you think in this thread.............read it all last year and loved it, but would love more to discuss it.

3rd................message to Happy Hippo + Dr.Strangelove........John Grisham........I have only read 1 Grisham (The Partner) and found it just ok(The Partner)..........What novels would you suggest that are his best ?

4th.................My 2011 wish for this thread would be that it is more of a discussion thread than a "listing" thread. I would love to see some discussions go on in here about books and authors...........................but maybe that is too much to ask. But I hope we at least try, and and I'll spearhead it.

OK.......... crime drama books review time...........

1) "The Lincoln Lawyer" by Michael Connelly
Wow................have read a lot of Connelly with mixed results, but this is one of his best. Lawyer Mickey Haller takes on an expensive client, counts the dollars going into his bank account, then has to actually figure out if this guy is innocent.

4.5/5

The movie version of this comes out in March with Matthew MaConaughey, Marisa Tomei, and William H. Macy starring. It's worth watching....I am hoping.

2) "Darkest Fear" by Harlan Coben
The 7th in his Myron Bolitar series.................I am reading them in order as his 10th come out in March. Deals with fear over your parents dying , etc....................extends the character, but was not a great novel.

3/5

3 + 4) "Night Sin" + "Guilty as Sin" by Tami Hoag
I had such high expectations from Tami Hoag after reading and enjoying "Deeper Than The Dead" in December, but this 2 book set from the mid 1990's left me wanting more.

It's one long story and it's not worth your time.
2.5/5

5)"Speaking in Tongues" by Jeffery Deaver
One of his earlier works, and it was IMO, one of his weakest. I am a BIG fan of Deaver, but this one missed the mark................won't even bore you with the Coles notes.

6) "One Thousand Cuts" by Simon Lelic
Been looking for this book for months and had such high expectations and was very disappointed. He tells an English murder mystery from many interviews. It wasn't up my alley.

2.5/5

7) "A Very Simple Crime" by Grant Jerkins
I read about this book in the NY Times bi-weekly crime column..........and it looked pretty good........went out and bought it that same afternoon............... read it in 48 hours.........and it is AWESOME...................this is a top 10 book, and it is his first novel..........exciting to get in on the bottom level of a new writer.

5/5

Am now reading "Pretty Girls" by JT Ellison

Tiger,

the 1st book in the Larsson trilogy was very slow thru 300 pages but I stayed with it and the 2nd half was very good. The 2nd book has started off good from the get go and I am about 1/4 of the way with it and will let you know but pretty sure it will be positive.

On Grisham, his 1st book, Time to Kill was by far the best...the subsequent 3-4 following were pretty good reads and I think he has gone down hill since...notice they have not been making movies on them?

Been a Coben fan since his 1st book came out in the Bolitar series and have read everything he has written...although I read Play Dead last month, his 1st book that re-released and I thought it was 100-200 pages too long as it kept repeating too much...thought I would be disappointed at first when he went away from Myron but the others are probably better stories while the Bolitars are enjoyable sports fiction.

I cannot keep up with you but I have read 71 books in last 2 years...I keep them and then go trade in at used bookstore for a batch of new ones...usually trying to find a new series to read thru complete

I picked up 2 complete series last year...one by Stephen Womack and they were more interesting to me because all of the stories were crime mysteries based here in Nashville so you could relate to all the landmarks in the books

I also read complete series by James Swain which were fun reads that were all fiction mysteries on poker/gambling

picking up new series and the dozen or so authors that I keep up with already is enough to keep busy:0074

5/10

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest

6.5/10

What the Night Holds
Koontz, Dean

.5/10 This book is an embarassment to Koontz, and seems to wrap up the entire plot, in a few pages. UTTER NONSENSE.

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

9.5/10

This may be the best book I read in 2011. not only is it a great historical account of the young brave souls of the World War II generation, the story line and various events are addicting. I read until 3 AM by accident last night. From the nightly runs of B-24s in the bombing of Japan's outlying territory, or the details of those stranded in the Pacific for days on end. I can't say enough about it.

I love this book. Not yet finished but hard to put down.

I am going to number my books for the year, as I have a goal of reaching 50 books, so this is just for my own reference...

4) The Road, Cormac McCarthy

***** Best book I have read in a really long time. I have always been interested in reading his books, and finally did it...then I decided to go a little overboard haha, but this was by far my favorite of all his books. Could not put it down, and found it very dark and emotional - my kind of reading.

5) All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy

*** A good book, but I found the descriptions of setting a bit too much for my liking. I guess I need a little more action and a bit less "painting through writing". I plan to finish this trilogy, but I needed a McCarthy break!

6) Outer Dark, Cormac McCarthy

*** Again, a bit too descriptive for me, but it was a short interesting read.

7) The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson

****1/2 Great book, would highly recommend it. About the World's Fair in Chicago and a serial killer who lived at that time as well. I honestly did not know anything about the world's fair, and found the account historically fascinating and I was surprised at the modernity that was mixed with poverty and (for lack of a better term) "third-world conditions". Also, I like dark reading, and the additional of the biography of a serial killer added suspense and macabre.

Currently halfway through "Zeitoun" and really enjoying it (account of Hurricane Katrina).

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Glad to see you like this, I am on the waiting list at the library for the ebook...

Tiger - I used to read a lot of Grisham when I was younger, but I have honestly had not read one of his books for probably 15 years until I read "The Appeal", which I did not like. Of the ones I read before, I would say "The Firm" and "The Pelican Brief" were my favorites.

And personally, in response to DTB, I would have to say that I am extremely disappointed with the decision to censure some of the classic books. I am going to make sure to have an original copy for my kids to read. I am by no means racist and would not condone the use of those words in my house, but it is part of the culture that Twain and others lived in, and to change words in these classic pieces of literature is almost to deny that these times ever happened. I would be interested to hear what an African-American actually thinks of this, because to me, it seems like it is almost undermining their historical struggle as well.

Finished 2 Crime Drama books since last checking in...........

1) "All the Pretty Girls" by JT Ellison.
This was her first novel from 4 years ago (of 5 to date) and introduces her main character, Lt Taylor Jackson from the Nashville PD.

Very enjoyable mystery about a killer who abducts and murders women one at a time.....and leaves the severed hand of his previous victim at the crime scene of his latest kill.

I like her writing style, and I like the way she re-uses some criminals throughout future books. It all ties together very nicely.

Her next novel...."So Close The Hand Of Death" is due out on March 1st.

4/5

2) "Immoral" by Brian Freeman.
Again, this is the author's first novel....of 5...... and is dated 2005. This is the 4th of his 5 books I have read and all 4 have been great. Not a poor mystery among them. His lead character is Lt. Jonathon Stroud of the Minnesota PD, and his novels are always set in the desolate cold winters of Minnesota, which I have found really adds to the chilling plots.

This one sees a teenage girl go missing and the suspects are many.............a sometimes boyfriend? her step-dad? the priest? a jealous girlfriend?

Very well written book that keeps you guessing to the end.

Freeman's next book is called "The Bone House" and is due out on March 29th. It is his first stand-alone book..............no Jonathon Stroud in this one.

4.5/5

Presently reading my first Greg Iles novel "The Quiet Game" and 100 pages in, I am hooked.

Happy Reading !

Tiger, you saying that entire series from JT Ellison is based in Nashville? I posted above about a complete series I read last year that was based here. Its always a little more fun when you know all the places, roads, landmarks, etc, in the town you live in while enjoying the story....will check it out and thanks!
