Hashish , You mentioned going back to Iowa City. Were you born & raised there if so how did you get involved with surfing ? I'am envious of your life style plus it sounds like you have your head on straight. Thanks for sharing !

Awesome thread man! I often dreamed of doing what you have done. I wanted nothing more than to go somewhere to surf and chill. In college me and my friends would talk about doing it for a couple of years after we graduated. All of us pussed out though. Now my wife and I talk about it. We always look around to try and stay up on places. Both of our kids will be in college in 10 years, I'll be 50 and would love to retire in a place like Peru. I think at 50 I will still have 10 good years of surfing in me.

What's your living situation like? Can you purchase homes there and what are they like?

:toast: You'll have more years than that left. My best friend down here retired at 62 to come down here with no intention of surfing. He had been a ski bum for decades and had never thought about surfing. He had just always wanted to live in Peru. After about a month of watching all the fun the kids were having in the water, he decided to give it a shot. Now he is in there everyday. He is not great, but he is competent and has a blast every time he goes in the water. It really is true that you are as young as you feel!

I live in a hotel because I have been too lazy to find a place to live. I should do it sometime though as I want to start growing some of the seeds I have saved since I have been here. You can purchase homes here. They are all made from concrete. None of them have HVAC systems as it is mild here all year round. You can get some pretty large and nice places for the $100-200k range. You could get a smaller place with 2-3 bedrooms for probably $50,000 or so.

No, I grew up in Wyoming and then moved to Iowa in 7th grade. I also lived in North Carolina for several years after I graduated from HS. I moved back to Iowa City when I was 24 to attend the university. I then moved back to North Carolina at age 27 when a girl I was with went there for grad school. I came back to Iowa City a few years later when that relationship fell apart. I was actually in my last semester of school when I flew down to South America and didn't come back. So as you can see, I haven't always had my head on straight. However, I am a strong believer in Bob Frost's theory that the road less traveled makes all the difference. I am definitely very happy with my life right now.

As far as surfing goes, it has just always been something I have wanted to do, even though most of my life I was completely landlocked. Every time I saw videos of it, read about it or looked at pictures of it I said to myself, "I am going to do that one day." Now that I have done it, I have to say it is even better than I imagined it would be.There is something very magical about floating out on the ocean waiting to catch a wave, and the rush when you are riding one is hard to beat.

Hey Hashish do you have any pictures of your apartment or the surrounding town?
Just read you live in a hotel. How long have you been there? That does not sound like something I would want to for any length of time.

Just wondering what you do for a living? How are you making money out there?

Twice, I have gotten drunk enough to leave my camera somewhere when I was out since I have been here. Of course, there was no sign of them when I remembered and went back to look for them. Both times they were loaded with photos. I only have a few photos from my time here. Most of them are of the sunset. I haven't replaced my camera since the second time it was ganked.

I actually like living in a hotel. I always have, and have never understood people who say they hate it. I do realize that mine is the minority opinion on this issue. Of course, when you can walk out the front door of your hotel, cross the street and be at the Pacific Ocean, it does tend to make things more enjoyable. :0074 Not to mention the joys of drifting of to the soothing sounds of the waves. My main complaints about living in a hotel are when groups of Germans or French are here and talking loudly.

I first had a job judging the quality of Google search results that was about the easiest and most enjoyable thing that I ever did. Unfortunately, Google has three companies hire people as independent contractors to do it so they don't have to pay a decent wage or offer any benefits. These companies let most people go after a year, and almost no one lasts more than two years. I managed to stick around for 14 months. Now, I am writing informational and sales copy for websites. It pays about the same per hour, but is much less enjoyable. I can only stand to do about a max of five hours a day of it, so I have been making much less. Luckily, I don't need much dough to get by here. I also might start teaching English online for a company my friend works for down here.

Again, great freaking thread. I still can't believe you actually just stayed down there. It's something almost all my friends have always said they would do but never did.

I can say that if in my 20s I would have gone there and been able to smoke and surf, I doubt I would have been able to leave. Although I might not have stayed if the women aren't really hot. And I'm not in to big women so I might not have liked it. Now though, I still love to smoke(rarely do) and LOVE to surf. I take my wife and kids surfing once a year and they all love it. My 8 yr old son can get a board and not come out of the water for an entire day. There's something about surfing that is unique. It's one of the few things that when I'm doing it, I don't need others around. It's fun to have friends doing it with you but it's just as fun by yourself.

Saying all of that, the white might have gotten me in trouble. That's pretty damn cheap!

This thread definitely rekindled thoughts of my buddy and i's teenage plan to become teachers and move to hawaii to teach high school so we could have summers off to surf, smoke maui wowie and party with hula girls.

I am taking this thread as a sign that I need to make a pilgrimage to this area. I checked out flights from nola to trujillo. It looks like I would have to overnight in Lima, which sucks since I would only head down for a week including travel days. Buses from Lima to Trujillo appear to take about 8 hours, so no relief there. going to research it further this evening.

Yeah, I will admit that the first three months I was here I had a little trouble with the white. I had never really done it before and went a little overboard. Now I avoid it for the most part. I totally agree with you about surfing being an activity that is amazing by yourself or with others. It really is the most magical thing in the world to me. The women aren't really big, it's just that as they age they tend to get a spare tire. There are beauties to be found. It's just that after seeing Colombia I got spoiled by the amazing abundance of hotties.

:toast: I would recommend coming in the US summer, when it is winter here. We get bigger waves from May through August, and that is the time of year you have the best chance of catching Chicama working. When it is working, it is an experience you will never forget.

LOL, I've already been talking to two friends about heading down in the spring. We all like to party and surf.

10 more years is all I keep telling myself and I can go down somewhere like this and stay. I've been thinking Mexico but this sounds pretty cool. I'm not sure I want to live in a tourist area though.

Is the water cold?

I would say cool more than cold. Most people wear a 3/2 suit and are quite comfortable, During the summer, some people get by with board shorts and a rash guard. I get cold easily, so I almost always wear my 3/2. Nearly every time I go out I'll see locals without a suit. They're made from sterner stuff than me. Just a couple hours north of here you can get out of the Humboldt current and surf in shorts. Ecuador waters are very warm.

So no disc golf in South America? Maybe I could come down there and we could design a course... one of my fav things to do although not as often as I'd like. Bet you could make some cool ass holes with major elevation changes...
