Living in Las Vegas

I have been playing some poker with decent results, but nothing too shocking. I have toyed with the idea of taking a shot at 2/5 and playing some PLO, but I haven't done it yet. I'm having more fun playing poker at least. I had a good session at the Aria yesterday. The Aria has a premium poker room with Fiji water as the standard. It's also ice cold, and of course u can get whatever drink there you desire. The waitresses come by frequently too. The dealers are ok, but I only enjoyed one of them (the others were duds).

Old non-hot dealer with resting bitch face (a sure sign of impending doom for 65, so I took a bathroom stretch my legs break when she sat down).

A funny thing was that she kept telling the guy next to me in the 3 seat to put his antes/bets more towards the center of the table so she could reach them easier, but when somebody put that $1 tip out there after the hand she sure could reach that haha!

I was at Caesar's Palace on Sunday, and I sat two to the right of an interesting guy. His name was Jarod, and he has the Seven Stars card. This is like the Diamond card times 10 and you have to be a high roller to attain this. The Seven stars card means they really roll out the red carpet for you and essentially everything is free. He ordered a Fiji water for me since the best they serve there without the seven stars card is Evian (let me make a small point here. The bottled water at the CET properties sucks! It tastes like plastic, and I'm quite sure it is loaded with carcinogens from sitting on huge pallets in the sun for extended periods of time. Premium bottled water is important to me when I play).

After an hour or so, he asked me if I had eaten. I told him no, so he took me on a tour. He told me that the best stuff was in the back of the high limit Baccarat area. I had never even heard of this area, so I followed along. The room was very full, and the minimum bet was $200 at some tables and $500 at others. I don't know this game at all except that u bet banker, player, or tie, and that there is no skill set to it even though I see people writing things down constantly. Jarod told me that if you are playing or seven stars you can get into this room. He said they never check for the seven stars ID, so we just strolled through like bosses to an unmarked door. The room was about 600 square feet, and he walks over to the hot food area, and exclaims, "Yes! They have the duck!" I have hunted ducks many times, and I have eaten them too. I was not excited because ducks are one step above geese which are one step above liver. I tried to match his enthusiasm, and I served myself a plateful of duck, noodles, and chicken stir fry. The food, including and especially the duck, was incredible. I absolutely loved every bite.

When we were done, he said, "let me show you this room". Tucked in a corner there was another unmarked door. We went inside, and it was about a 200 square feet room with a stalled toilet, a sink, and two chairs. He said this is where he entertains his female guests, and he pointed to the open door which had a lock on it from the inside. I had never heard of a casino door/room that the patron could enter and lock from the inside. This is where the high rollers can get away with their ladies for a quickie!

Next stop was the high limit slot room. This housed another unmarked door. Inside this room was a luxurious leather couch and a selection of macaroons. Jarod said he also brought ladies there (dimmer switch on the room light). Now I have had the tour from the high roller perspective.

The next day I went to the Westgate to eat on my comps, and I sent jack and Smurph my little parlay. I never bet parlays, but I did here BC I didn't want to expose myself with big sports bets and to have a little action.

Winner! I ate at the sushi bar. It was expensive and good, but it didn't compare to Sakana.

The sportsbook is still not finished, but the viewing experience is still amazing. https://vimeo.com/143161376

I Work the next 3 nights. Our celebrity is gone I read, so things should me more normal. My Haiti trip is a little over 2 months away, so I need to buckle down and work more extra shifts to pay for it.

I also ran into the Trooper the other night. The game at the Linq was nonexistent where he was working, so we chatted a bit about his upcoming projects. His videos are really getting good, and it sounds like he has some exciting things going on in the near future. Hopefully they all work out for him. I asked him if he was worried that he needed to match each video with the subsequent one and therefore worried it was all too time consuming. He said no and that he still loved doing them.

They have the "secret baccarat rooms" at many casinos in Nevada, the asians bet HUGE money on baccarat. Back in the 90's at Casino Niagara (Niagara Falls, Ontario) I was playing at a table with asians laying down 20 grand a hand, I still remember that night. 33 players in a row (I got in on it at 12 in a row), we all won big and the casino lost massive amount of money.....ahhhh memories. Your "secret room" talk reminded me of that day.

As for the "locked doors for the quickies" I know those rooms well, not personally of course, but I had an ex that worked at the Bunny Ranch, I know about those "locked doors quickie rooms" trust me on that.

And oh yeah....ride the streak when you play baccarat....33 "players" in a row :0058

Pretty nice of that "high roller dude" to get you free food and give you a tour, that was nice of him:00x15

Work and poker

I worked a long stretch of 5 straight. I had some good nights, and one bad night. The bad night was complicated by others not doing their job which caused me undue stress, and a stupid policy of the Union at the hospital which only allows certain nurses to work in the role of a "task nurse" instead of taking patients like they should. I have never been around a union in the field of nursing, and you can color me completely unimpressed by this one as I see them do nothing to help with problems at hand. What a complete waste of money for the nurses who pay into it on a weekly basis. What a joke.

Ready for a dressing change. These supplies were for an ex-lap. That's a big midline abdominal incision that allows the surgeon to fully visualize the abdominal cavity and sort through the intestines (usually looking for and trying to repair the causes of an obstruction). I hope I never have this problem!

Tuesday night, I went to eat at a very top rated and recommended Chinese restaurant in Chinatown called Joyful House. I ordered the cashew chicken, and it was only fair and later made me sick. What a disappointment this place was. I'll have to go to Chinatown soon and take pics. It's a very interesting place.

After I ate, I decided to go to the Aria again. I sat down at a loaded table. This is only 1/3, but the chip leader was a 60 year old New Yorker white guy who had $1500 in front of him. There were several other $500+ stacks, and another Asian lady had a dime. I only sat down with $200. I quickly found out that the white guy was very LAG with his stack fully in play. That's good news for me, and time to play relatively tight, solid, position poker.

White guy doubled up a loose middle eastern convention guy, and then loose middle eastern convention guy doubled me up when I had KK vs his 1010. White guy made a river bluff soon thereafter that I called him down with third pair and won forcing him to instantly muck. He later doubled up wannabe 20 something pro, and 30 something wannabe pro doubled thru middle eastern convention guy. I won a few more pots, and white guy was down to $400, the pros had $500 and $750 (money completely not in play), and I stopped liking the texture of my table, so I left the game a $330 winner.

It was only around 11PM, so I stopped in at the Wynn. The Wynn runs a 1/3 game just like the Aria, but the room is a little smaller. I only bought in for $140 which is all I was willing to put at risk because I was going home a winner. We were playing short handed, and I quickly rose to $200 then back down to $70 then back to $110 before my table broke. I sat down at another table in the 10 seat and played basic ABC position poker. I did make a well-timed bluff, and I stayed away from the loose Asian in seat 1.

I played for a few hours and woke up with AK suited UTG. I raised it to $20, got one caller, then late position moved all in for $90 total. Late position was a fairly passive European, and I was sure he was strong, but there's no way I'm folding here. I took some time and called, and the other caller folded. Flop was AK 8 then 5 then A. I quickly turned up my AK after the flop, and all in turned over QQ to be dominated. I cashed out shortly after this, and was happy with my modest $120 win which put me up $450 for the night. Fun times and profit and comps earned all at the same time. Tough to beat.

Yesterday, I caught up on sleep while getting over my Joyful House sickness. I had to mail a package to home for B, so I stopped in at a new place. It was called ICheese, and sandwiches and pizzas were on the menu. I wanted something small, so I ordered the chicken Makhlob. I realized later this was a Persian food, and although I think some of the most beautiful women in the world are of Persian descent, I now know I sure don't like their disgusting food.

That's all I could eat of that disgusting tomato/onion based slop. Never again.

Today, I'm thinking about playing the 1PM tourney today at the Aria. It's $125 and usually has 90+ entrants which will be a mix of horrible and average players. I'll post updates if anything good happens.

Quick, hopefully helpful tips from work.

1) If you drink every day, stop now because it will cause you a world of bad health health and misery later in your life. I see it at work all the time. I have a new patient tonight with a brand new diagnosis of cirrhosis, and she is 49.

2) cherish your family and loved ones, and if you have conflicts, do your best to remedy them. It's very sad to see people who are sick and at the end of their life who have nobody, and I see it regularly. Literally, nobody in the world cares if they live or die.

3) only take narcotics if you are in pain. Don't take them for the rush/high. This leads to a plethora of bad problems as well. It's normal to hurt as you get older. Suck it up if you can.

4) If you have a friend Or loved one with psychological issues or problems, try to be understanding and realize that the American medical system is completely broken in this area. Be their advocate. Ask questions and help them pursue treatment. The ER here and every where in this country I estimate to be 50-60% patients with untreated or poorly treated psychological disorders.

Work (tldr)

I just came off of a 4 night stretch at work. I'll write about a few of the patients.

There are two semi-private rooms on both sides of the nurses station. We tend to put patients in those rooms who are confused because when they start climbing out of bed by themselves, we can hear the bed alarm and run in there. I was in one of those rooms helping to turn and change her patient. The curtain for the other side of the room was pulled, and I looked over and I could just see feet. The feet were of a white woman (presumably large), and she was wearing flip flops. The soles of her feet were black and disgusting. In Las Vegas, the streets are dirty, and if you wear flip flops, u have to bathe at least every few days, or you will look like pig pen.

I saw this woman a few minutes later. She came out of the room asking for sandwiches, ice cream, and an ice pack. I saw her hands, and she looked like she had been working as an auto mechanic. I imagined how nasty she must be. She was probably 6'1" 275 pounds of dirty grossness. She started to become more annoying BC she kept asking for food and drinks.

The next day I see her walking into the room with the patient. He was in a car accident and sustained a mild head injury. Both of them reeked of cigarette smoke. U can't smoke in the hospital, and here in LV, you can't leave the floor, or they boot you out. 2 hours later we get a call from the next floor that one of our patients is smoking in their public bathroom with an Oxygen tank! Wtf! We rolled down there, followed our noses, and found a locked door. The patient said he couldn't come out bc he was having diarrhea  We told him we would have security come unlock the door, so he came out with dirty Amazon trailing behind. The bathroom looked like a cigar bar, but both of them vehemently lied about smoking. They also said they were in a room upstairs and nearly started sprinting away from us. We got them back in their room, called security, dirty Amazon was escorted off the premises, and patient signed out AMA (against medical advice) and walked out with no shoes. What a couple of stupid losers. No, we are not giving u bus passes or a taxi voucher either.

The woman in another room was with her husband. She asked for food. We gave her a sandwich. She then said she wasn't too fond of sandwiches and could she have something else. When she was told no, she angrily replied that she was told she would be provided for. Take into account here she is already getting three guest trays a day for free plus snacks (like sandwiches and ice cream at night).

One of my patients was high on meth, decided he wanted to end it, so he climbed up on the monorail track some way and jumped off  For his troubles, he miraculously only sustained bilateral lower leg fractures, and he can't bear weight for at least 3 months. He has no insurance, no money, and he's 21. He is being Medicaid fast tracked, so he won't have a hospital bill, so you and I are picking up his tab. Since he tried to commit suicide, the hospital is posting an employee in his room at all times to watch him, so his bill will actually be extremely high. He actually had the nerve to ask me if the hospital or state was going to put him up in an apartment while he recovers and also provide him with money for expenses. :wtf: are people thinking??

4 alcoholic patients this week All between the ages of 42-45. The first presented with abdominal pain, pancreatitis (very painful and directly related to excessive drinking). She admits to heavy hard liquor usage every day, but her husband recently hid the liquor cabinet key and only gives her 2 ounces a day. She doesn't feel like drinking is a problem. The second is a type A beauty shop owner who works 6 days a week and long hours. She admits to 4-6 beers a day. She came to the ER bc of leg weakness and a painful left flank that has a huge hematoma. Blood work diagnosed early cirrhosis and a low platelet count (caused the excessive bruising and hematoma and directly related to her drinking). She doesn't feel drinking is a problem.

Number 3 speaks Spanish. He admits to drinking a pint of tequila daily. He was in an accident on his bicycle and sustained a non-surgical lumbar fracture. By morning, he started getting "the shakes" or DTs, so he obv drinks way more than a pint a day. He decided to leave AMA. He staggered out of his own accord, and I'm not sure he found the elevator. Number 4 used to be a cab driver, but I really like this guy. He denies alcohol use, but his diagnosis is ascites (large collection of fluid in the abdomen) that is caused by an alcoholic liver. When he came in to the hospital, he had so much fluid in his abdomen he could barely move, and he was having a hard time breathing. A paracentesis was performed on him to drain the fluid, and 6 Liters were extracted. The bad thing is, he started filling up again immediately, and he will keep constantly filling up forever. What a terrible existence that is. He's only 45.

Last patient is 38. He has back pain, and he constantly seeks medical treatment and narcotics for it. He is a gigantic baby. I think the physicians give into him bc he complains so much. He is on a PCA pump. This means he has a button to push whenever he has pain. People who have had painful surgery commonly have this, but this guy has the largest dose I have ever seen. He gets a basal/continuous dose of 200 mcg per hour of Fentanyl plus he can get 100 mcg every 10 minutes for a maximum of 800 mcg per hour  to put this into perspective, a lot of you guys have had colonoscopies. For that, 50-100 mcg of Fentanyl is given plus a little Valium. He constantly wants more! I would be dead as would probably 90% of the population.

To make things more special, he has man boobs and a large gut, so he flounders around in the bed and gets in ridiculous situations, so we have to pull his fatass back up in the bed. He also is so sedated that he pisses on himself. His mom is there often, and I truly believe she is mentally challenged. She asks the most stupid questions constantly, and she's just in the way. In front of his mom, he told three of the nurses, "I'm a gay man, but you are very pretty", and, "I want the lap band; my weight has me so depressed that I have lost my sex drive." Who the heck talks about their sex drive in front of their mom? He calls out constantly for food too. Last night he had 20 ice cream cups and 3 sandwiches. He cries so loud when he turns that we can hear him all the way down the hallway. He is the biggest bitch of a patient I have ever seen in my life.

These are just some examples of patients I have. I like being a nurse, and most patients I like. I don't want to come off as cynical. I'm blessed to be a nurse and to have my job.
